    Notes: Abstract Peptides have been shown to cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB) as intact molecules so that they can influence the central nervous system. Peptides cross by saturable and nonsaturable mechanisms in the direction of both brain to blood and blood to brain. Passage of peptides, especially by saturable transport, has been shown to be influenced by pharmacological agents and physiological events. These findings support the view that peptides or their analogues could be useful as therapeutic agents for disorders of the central nervous system. They also suggest strategies in approaching therapeutic goals, including manipulating transport rates, targeting diseases due to altered BBB–peptide interactions, and designing analogues capable of taking advantage of such mechanisms of passage as paracellular trans-membrane diffusion and brain-to-blood transport.

    Description: The OceanGliders program started in 2016 to support active coordination and enhancement of global glider activity. OceanGliders contributes to the international efforts of the Global Ocean Observation System (GOOS) for Climate, Ocean Health, and Operational Services. It brings together marine scientists and engineers operating gliders around the world: (1) to observe the long-term physical, biogeochemical, and biological ocean processes and phenomena that are relevant for societal applications; and, (2) to contribute to the GOOS through real-time and delayed mode data dissemination. The OceanGliders program is distributed across national and regional observing systems and significantly contributes to integrated, multi-scale and multi-platform sampling strategies. OceanGliders shares best practices, requirements, and scientific knowledge needed for glider operations, data collection and analysis. It also monitors global glider activity and supports the dissemination of glider data through regional and global databases, in real-time and delayed modes, facilitating data access to the wider community. OceanGliders currently supports national, regional and global initiatives to maintain and expand the capabilities and application of gliders to meet key global challenges such as improved measurement of ocean boundary currents, water transformation and storm forecast.

    Description: The production of synthetic or substitute natural gas (SNG) from coal is a process of interest in Colombia where the reserves-to-production ratio (R/P) for natural gas is expected to be between 7 and 10 years, while the R/P for coal is forecasted to be around 90 years. In this work, the process to produce SNG by means of coal-entrained flow gasifiers is modeled under thermochemical equilibrium with the Gibbs free energy approach. The model was developed using a complete and comprehensive Aspen Plus model. Two typical technologies used in entrained flow gasifiers such as coal dry and coal slurry are modeled and simulated. Emphasis is put on interactions between the fuel feeding technology and selected energy output parameters of coal-SNG process, that is, energy efficiencies, power, and SNG quality. It was found that coal rank does not significantly affect energy indicators such as cold gas, process, and global efficiencies. However, feeding technology clearly has an effect on the process due to the gasifying agent. Simulations results are compared against available technical data with good accuracy. Thus, the proposed model is considered as a versatile and useful computational tool to study and optimize the coal to SNG process.

    Description: This work focuses on the evaluation of the degradation of 17β-estradiol in a mixture of synthetic urine and methanol, trying to determine in which conditions the hormone can be more easily degraded than the urine compounds. This is in the frame of an overall study in which the pre-concentration stage with adsorption/desorption technology is evaluated to improve electrolysis efficiency. Results show that this pollutant can be efficiently removed from mixtures of urine/methanol by electrolysis with diamond electrodes. This removal is simultaneous with the removal of uric acid (used as a model of natural pollutants of urine) and leads to the formation of other organic species that behave as intermediates. This opens the possibility of using a concentration strategy based on the adsorption of pollutants using granular activated carbon and their later desorption in methanol. Despite methanol being a hydroxyl radical scavenger, the electrolysis is found to be very efficient and, in the best case, current charges lower than 7 kAh·m−3 were enough to completely deplete the hormone from urine. Increases in the operation current density lead to faster but less efficient removal of the 17β-estradiol, while increases in the operation flowrate do not markedly affect the efficiency in the removal. Degradation of 17β-estradiol is favored with respect to that of uric acid at low current densities and at high flowrates. In those conditions, direct oxidation processes on the surface of the anode are encouraged. This means that these direct processes can have a higher influence on the degradability of the hazardous species and opens the possibility for the development of selective oxidation processes, with a great economic impact on the degradation of the hazardousness of hospitalary wastewater.

    Description: The development of Medium Frequency Transformers (MFTs) from a novel perspective is essential for the advancement of today´s various relevant applications such as the emerging solid-state transformers, along with interfaces for the interconnection of photovoltaic parks and electric vehicles. The analysis, design and implementation of MFTs pursuing the achievement of characteristics such as high power density, high efficiency, and a specific dispersion inductance is a key goal for designers. There are several parameters and design methods that influence the final performance of an MFT, such as the geometry and material of the core. The advantages/disadvantages of each material/geometry combination, about the dispersion inductance for instance, are not well known, even considering a single material but various geometries. This paper presents the analysis, design and experimental development of three nanocrystalline-core MFTs, each one with a different core geometry (toroidal, type CC and shell-type). The purpose of this work is to evaluate and compare the most favourable characteristics and performance of each type of geometry, tested at 5 kHz and 1.75 kVA. The cases studied, in simulation and experimentation with scaled prototypes, focus on evaluating the power density, the core losses, the winding losses, the geometric dimensions, and the dispersion inductance obtained in each MFT, as well as its performances operating with sinusoidal and square waveforms. The results show that: 1) the toroid core has higher efficiency; 2) the shell core has the lowest dispersion inductance and is easier to build, and 3) the CC type has the highest dispersion inductance. This new information is a step to further understand how to get more controllable, more efficient MFTS, with a higher power density and lower cost, depending on the intended application of cutting-edge DC-DC DAB-type converters.
