    Notes: A first adaptive x-ray mirror prototype was built in 1992 and is now installed on the ESRF beamline 2 (Materials Science). This system consists of a water-cooled 1 m long Pt-coated Si mirror, supported by two rows of 11 piezoelectric actuators. The shape of the mirror is continuously monitored by an optical analyzer; its readout being used by a feedback loop in a real-time algorithm. A workstation associated to real-time electronics calculates the relevant parameters for driving the actuators as a function of both the desired shape and the possible thermal deformation due to the incident beam. Preliminary experiments carried out on the wiggler beamline showed that the system runs correctly: the feedback loop permits a control of the mirror shape in the microrad range at a frequency of 10 Hz. Various shapes (cylinder, parabola, or ellipse) can be produced at will to within the above accuracy. The different components of the device are described and the alignment and calibration procedures are discussed. The first results dealing with the properties of the reflected beam (size, divergence, and shape) versus both the calibration quality and the incoming power are presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A cell for examining the density profile of sheared fluids at the solid-liquid interface by neutron reflectometry is presented. This cell has also proven valuable in examining near-surface bulk structures in the plane perpendicular to the shear flow using small angle neutron scattering. The shear rates can be controlled by changing the volume flow through the cell over three orders of magnitude. All components of the cell are designed to be chemically inert. A temperature-controlled environment compatible with neutron studies is also briefly described. Preliminary neutron reflectivity and small angle neutron scattering results using this cell are presented, and potential applications are discussed.

    Notes: Operation of the trapped plasma avalanche transit time (TRAPATT) diode in the time domain is presented. When operated in the time domain, pulses with amplitudes greater than 1,000 V and risetimes well under 300 ps can be achieved. Selection of a diode for use as a TRAPATT diode is discussed. Experimental results demonstrate pulse generation with an amplitude of 2000 V into 50 Ω and a risetime of 200 ps using a single diode and a power MOSFET driving circuit.

    Notes: The design and operation of a gas aggregation source is described. The source combines the attributes of high-temperature operation (enabling preparation of transition metal clusters), mass selection, ultrahigh vacuum compatibility, and transportability. This makes it ideally suited to in situ studies such as scanning tunneling microscope or synchrotron radiation experiments.     Notes: An instrument is described which can obtain x-ray spectral power measurements utilizing the diffraction pattern produced when x rays pass through a slit. Traditionally, these types of measurements yielding low to moderate spectral resolution have been made with filtered x-ray diodes or with a transmission grating. The instrument described below has several advantages over filtered x-ray diodes in determining the spectral power profile such as an insensitivity to surface contamination. In addition, this instrument does not require the use of filters which can be destroyed during a shot making absolute measurements difficult and very time consuming. The advantages over a transmission grating system include cost, mechanical robustness, and fewer components which require spectral calibration. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The design, construction and operation of a tomographic imaging system on the Compact Toroid Injection Experiment is described. The system measures the total radiated power over energies from visible light up into the extreme ultraviolet. It then reconstructs two dimensional profiles from the data. The reconstruction routine is based on a method known as second order regularization which finds a compromise between smoothness and fit to the data. This method was found to have the best overall fidelity to test images. The hardware and overall reconstruction were calibrated using two different sources. First results from the system under real experimental conditions are presented. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Beamline 9 Wiggler was designed by Intermagnetics to produce a 16 milliradian fan of high energy x-rays into three experimental stations. The device has a 26 cm period and contains 7.5 full-strength periods. The minimum air gap is 2.1 cm. At minimum gap, a peak field of 1.9 Tesla and a half-period integrated field strength of ≥16.646 T-cm were specified by the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL). A combination of analytical, PANDIRA, and scale models were used to develop a novel "compact pole'' magnetic design. This design achieved 2.04 T peak field while maintaining a minimum of 17.816 T-cm half-period integrated field strength. Magnetic performance of the device was confirmed through the use of an Intermagnetics-designed Hall Probe scanning system as well as by long and short coil measurements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
