Notes: 14 C-dated by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and compared with 14C ages of total organic C (TOC) of bulk soils and acid-hydrolyzed residues. In all cases, aliphatic hydrocarbons were significantly older than TOC but comparable with (in some cases older than) hydrolyzed residues, indicating that the 14C content of aliphatic hydrocarbons reflects the age of a passive-fraction C. The age differences between the aliphatic hydrocarbons and TOC increase with the degree of mineralization: thus, up to a 10000 yr difference in age is observed for highly mineralized horizons in podzol and acid brown earth. The leaf-wax n-alkanes (C25 to C33) isolated from a peaty gley core show a virtually linear relationship between their ages and the depth. In contrast to bulk soil organic matter that contains younger C deposited by plant roots and by water leaching, leaf wax n-alkanes are contributed at the soil surface by the leaves of dead plants and are of low mobility due to their extremely low water-solubility. The low biodegradability of long-chain n-alkanes leads to their persistence in the soil horizons where they were originally deposited. Therefore, their ages are ideal as chronological indicators for soils and peats.

Description: Mapping the abundance of 13C in leaf-wax components in surface sediments recovered from the seafloor off northwest Africa (0–35°N) reveals a clear pattern of delta13C distribution, indicating systematic changes in the proportions of terrestrial C3 and C4 plant input. At 20°N latitude, we find that isotopically enriched products characteristic of C4 plants account for more than 50% of the terrigenous inputs. This signal extends westward beneath the path of the dust-laden Sahara Air Layer (SAL). High C4 contributions, apparently carried by January trade winds, also extend far into the Gulf of Guinea. Similar distributions are obtained if summed pollen counts for the Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae and the Poaceae are used as an independent C4 proxy. We conclude that the specificity of the latitudinal distribution of vegetation in North West Africa and the pathways of the wind systems (trade winds and SAL) are responsible for the observed isotopic patterns observed in the surface sediments. Molecular-isotopic maps on the marine-sedimentary time horizons (e.g., during the last glacial maximum) are thus a robust tool for assessing the phytogeographic changes on the tropical and sub-tropical continents, which have important implications for the changes in climatic and atmospheric conditions.

Description: Inorganic analyses of major, trace, and rare earth element concentrations for 30 bulk sediment samples at Site U1445 and additional samples from other sites in the Bay of Bengal for reference. Bulk sediment samples were freeze-dried and hand-powdered in an agate mortar and pestle prior to flux fusion for analyses of major elements with ICP-ES and an acid cocktail digestions for analyses of trace and rare earth elements on ICP-MS (Dunlea et al., 2015, doi:10.1002/2015PA002829). Analyses of 57 bulk sediment samples from Site U1445 for bulk calcium carbonate, total organic carbon, total carbon, total acidified nitrogen, carbon isotopes of the total organic carbon, and the designation of visually lighter versus darker samples at similar depths. Hydrogen isotopes and carbon isotope analyses of leaf wax fatty acids extracted from 57 samples at Site U1445. Measurements from fatty acid chainlengths C26, C28, and C30 are reported with their standard deviation. The correction for C3-C4 physiological differences in the hydrogen isotopes of C30 fatty acids is reported, estimating C3 vegetation as having a δ13C of -35.4 ‰ and C4 vegetation as -21.4‰.
