    Description: Cattle grazing St. Augustine grass growing on peaty muck soils in the Florida Everglades developed anemia associated with the presence of Heinz bodies and suboptimal concentrations of selenium in blood. Selenium supplementation corrected the anemia, prevented Heinz body formation, increased the body weight of cows and calves, and elevated blood selenium.     Notes: A macromodel is developed for estimating the year-long biomass productivity of outdoor cultures of microalga in tubular photobioreactors. The model evaluates the solar irradiance on the culture surface as a function of day of the year and the geographic location. In a second step, the geometry of the system is taken into account in estimating the average irradiance to which the cells are exposed. Finally, the growth rate is estimated as a function of irradiance, taking into account photoinhibition and photolimitation. The model interconnects solar irradiance (an environmental variable), tube diameter (a design variable), and dilution rate (an operating variable). Continuous cultures in two different tubular photobioreactors were analyzed using the macromodel. The biomass productivity ranged from 0.50 to 2.04 g L-1 d-1, and from 1.08 to 2.76 g L-1 d-1, for the larger and the smaller tube diameter photobioreactors, respectively. The quantum yield ranged from 1.1 to 2.2 g E-1; the higher the incident solar radiation, the lower the quantum yield. Simultaneous photolimitation and photoinhibition of outdoor cultures was observed. The model reproduced the experimental results with less than 20% error. If photoinhibition was neglected, and a growth model that considered only photolimitation was used to fit the data, the error increased to 45%, thus reflecting the inadequacy of previous outdoor growth models that disregard photoinhibition. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: A semiempirical model, based on the presence of an inhibitory intermediate metabolite excreted to the broth, was developed to better predict the dynamic responses to shock loadings of Pseudomonas putida Q5 degrading phenol. Compared to the Haldane equation, the new model exhibited better prediction capabilities for a broad range of inlet concentration and dilution rate step changes. The experiments were performed at 10° and 25°C and ranged from stable responses to washouts. The time delays observed experimentally were successfully predicted with the dual-inhibition model and a very good agreement with the observed phenol profile also was found in a pulse experiment. A possible intermediate metabolite was detected by HPLC analyses based on the high correlation shown with the predicted inhibitory intermediate metabolite in the model. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Aerobic digestion of waste-activated sludge was carried out in lab-scale reactors for both batch and semicontinuous flow patterns. The reactors were monitored at three different temperatures: 10, 20, and 30°C. During the course of digestion, significant solubilization of volatile suspended solids was observed, and its effect on the magnitude of kinetic coefficients was examined. Differences in metabolic activity and sludge stabilization were found between batch and semicontinuous flow patterns. An Arrhenius-type relationship was not found to apply to rate constants for the semicontinuous reactors.

    Notes: In this work, a radiometric method is used for the determination of the oil drop size distribution in agitated hydrocarbon-water systems. The influence of the counter position, the oil concentration, and the rotation speed of impeller were studied. An experimental parameter is proposed for the definition of the drop size distribution. It was observed that an unsymmetrical distribution represents the drop size distribution better than the normal distribution law.

    Notes: Ultrafiltration of high-purity grade bovine serum albumin has been carried out under various temperature between 5 and 30°C and at various cross-flow velocities, pressures, and concentrations with the aim of studying protein denaturation and its consequences on the process. Three different pump heads have been tested. Denaturation of proteins in solution has been monitored by laser light scattering and size exclusion chromatography. The rate of protein denaturation increases with temperature, cross-flow, and time. It is observed that membrane fouling is different whether denaturation has occurred or not. Under high-concentration polarization, denaturation can occur in the boundary layer if the wall concentration exceeds 400 g/L. It is shown how the residence time, operating temperature, and pressure play an important part in membrane fouling. This can provide guidelines for process design and control.

    Notes: A methodology for the design and evalution of bioprocess control strategies is presented. The strategies manage nutrient supply with demand and vary with the metabolic condition and phase of fermentation operation. Six carbon source addition strategies are based on different combinations of available measurements; they are described and evaluated under different operating conditions for yeast cultivation. It is concluded that a single control strategy is not the most appropriate under all possible operating conditions. An oxygen uptake rate-based control strategy performs better with a mean respiratory quotient (RQ) value less than 1.1 during an oxygen limitation than an ethanol control strategy which had a mean RQ of 14. The designed strategies and an approach of applying the strategy that best matches fermentation conditions consistently enables achievement of high cell densities 78.7 g DCW/L and yields 0.50 g DCW/g glucose as the mean values for three fermentations.
