Notizen: The structures of ices III and V have been studied under their thermodynamic conditions of stability by neutron diffraction. The results clearly indicate partial ordering of the water molecule orientations for both ice structures. For ice V the ordering is both pressure and temperature dependent, while no significant changes in ordering were noted for ice III within the small region of stability. No reduction in symmetry, necessary for complete orientational ordering, was observed for ice V at low temperatures. The ordering behavior of ice V at low temperatures (〈150 K), when considered in conjunction with dielectric measurements at high temperatures, suggests that while relaxation is achieved predominantly through the diffusion of rotational defects at high temperatures, the mechanism at low temperatures appears to be the migration of ionic defects which require only a small activation energy for mobilization. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Gated, microchannel-plate-based (MCP) framing cameras have been deployed worldwide for 0.2–9 keV x-ray imaging and spectroscopy of transient plasma phenomena. For a variety of spectroscopic and imaging applications, the angular sensitivity of MCPs must be known for correctly interpreting the data. We present systematic measurements of angular sensitivity at discrete relevant photon energies and arbitrary MCP gain. The results can been accurately predicted by using a simple two-dimensional approximation to the three-dimensional MCP geometry and by averaging over all possible photon ray paths. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: No reliable structural data have been reported on ice II under pressure, earlier work in the literature relating either to samples recovered to ambient pressure or the helium hydrate that is formed when helium is used as the pressurizing medium. We report structural refinements of helium-free ice II at three points in the phase's region of stability. The structural differences from the helium-affected structure are significant, and can be related to the mainly repulsive interaction between the helium and both the oxygen and hydrogen atoms of the ice framework. These repulsions explain, among other changes, the different behaviors of the a (expansion) and c (contraction) lattice parameters, and the change in compressibility on the inclusion of helium. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract. The small subunit rDNA sequence of Maristentor dinoferus (Lobban, Schefter, Simpson, Pochon, Pawlowski, and Foissner, 2002) was determined and compared with sequences from other Heterotrichea and Karyorelictea. Maristentor resembles Stentor in basic morphology and had been provisionally assigned to Stentoridae. However, our phylogenetic analyses show that Maristentor is more closely related to Folliculinidae. Our results support the creation of a separate family for Maristentor, Maristentoridae n. fam., and also confirm the phylogenetic grouping of Folliculindae, Stentoridae, Blepharismidae, and Maristentoridae, which we informally call ‘stentorids’. Maristentor, rather than Stentor itself, appears to be most significant in understanding the origins of folliculinids from their aloricate ancestors. Our analyses suggest continued uncertainty in the exact placement of the root of heterotrichs with this phylogenetic marker.

Notizen: Two new ciliates—a heterotrich and a hypotrich—have recently been discovered in the shallow benthos of coral reefs on Guam. They are unusual for ciliates in having zooxanthellae, but they share this characteristic with corals and many other reef animals. The heterotrich was a new genus, named Maristentor dinoferus, the hypotrich a Euplotes sp., and the dinoflagellate partner a Symbiodinium sp. Apart from their interest as dual-alveolate symbioses, the heterotrich has abundant, fluorescent pigment with intriguing possibilities for comparison with stentorin and blepharismin pigments from freshwater ciliates that serve in both phototropisms and chemical defense. Comparison with deep-water corals also raises the possibility that the cortical pigment enhances photosynthesis of the zooxanthellae.

Notizen: Protists are notably absent from reef biodiversity checklists, with the exception of forams. A recent comprehensive compilation for Guam listed 303 forams, which indicate the level of biodiversity, yet there were only two other protozoans and no lists for benthic microalgae. My studies of the microbenthos began with some tube-dwelling diatoms and colonial Pelagophyceae that form macroscopic, seaweed-like colonies. More recently, I have become interested in two ciliates with symbiotic zooxanthellae, and in looking for these have begun to notice other protists. This presentation will display a “rogue's gallery” of microbenthos, beginning with the alveolates (ciliates—Condylostoma sp. and Euplotes spp. in particular; dinos and the symbioses), then some stramenopiles: diatoms and pelagophytes. The audience will be invited to identify the mystery ciliates and I hope the stills and videos will whet your appetite to study tropical reefs.
