    Notizen: The complete 1H and 13C NMR assignments for 3,6-epoxypentacyclo[6.2.2.02,7.04,10.05,9]dodecane and 3,6-epoxypentacyclo[6.2.1.02,7.04,10.05,9]undecane are reported. The difference between the 1H and 13C chemical shifts and one-bond proton-carbon coupling constants of these two compounds are adequately explained by the difference in the hybridization of the C—H bonds.

    Notizen: Time resolved photoluminescence and deep level transient spectroscopy have been used to monitor the effect of rapid thermal annealing on bulk GaInP and GaInP/AlGaInP quantum wells grown by solid source molecular beam epitaxy similar to those used in 650 nm range lasers. Following rapid thermal annealing at temperatures up to 875 °C, reductions in the concentration of several deep level traps are observed. Correlation of these data with photoluminescent intensity and lifetime measurements indicate that the defect labeled N3, 0.83 eV below the conduction band, is the dominant recombination center. The combination of these two transient spectroscopy measurement techniques is therefore not only able to measure the change in deep level concentration, but also to correlate this change with improved carrier lifetimes and, ultimately, reduced threshold current densities in quantum well lasers. There is also evidence to suggest that this same defect, possibly a phosphorous vacancy or a related complex, plays an important role in other GaInP based devices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The majority carrier traps formed in p-GaInP following room temperature irradiation with 3.1 MeV protons have been investigated using deep level transient Fourier spectroscopy. The radiation damage consists of several closely spaced peaks, one of which may have existed in the as-grown material. Energy levels of three of these new traps are reported although in the presence of such closely spaced peaks the energy parameters could only be reliably measured after annealing was used to eliminate shoulder peaks. The spectrum and its annealing behavior are explainable in terms of GaP and InP levels being superimposed. Among the observed peaks, two of the radiation induced levels have been associated with a gallium vacancy defect and a phosphorous Frenkel. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We examined relative competition abilities of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti) and soybean (Glycine max) grown in a replacement series near Ames, Iowa, U.S.A. in 1986 and 1987. Relative above ground dry weight of soybean in mixtures was higher than expected from mono culture values early in the growing season but lower than expected later in the season, whereas velvetleaf had higher than expected values later in the season. Velvetleaf depressed seed yield of soybean in all mixtures; relative seed yield of velvetleaf was greater in all mixtures than in monoculture. Relative growth rate (RGR), leaf area ratio (LAR) and net assimilation rate (NAR) of soybean did not differ significantly among mixtures and generally decreased over the growing season. Velvetleaf exhibited no consistent differences among mixtures in RGR, LAR, and NAR. Net assimilation rate of velvetleaf was constant over most of the growing season. Relative growth rate and LAR of velvetleaf were highest early in the season and then progressively declined. Velvetleaf had higher NAR and higher RGR than soybean early in the season; LAR of velvetleaf was lower than LAR of soybean over most of the season. Velvetleaf and soybean did not significantly interfere with each other early in the growing season, but velvetleaf gained resources at the expense of soybean during the middle and later parts of the season.

    Notizen: Interference of Sinapis arvensis L. (wild mustard) and Chenopodium album L. (lamb's-quarters) in spring rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) was studied under field conditions in 1983 and 1984. Both weed species interfered with rapeseed early in the growing season, causing significant reductions in rapeseed dry weight by June of each year. Sinapis arvensis caused greater rapeseed grain yield reductions than did C. album. With weed densities of 20–80 plants m−2, rapeseed grain yield reductions ranged from 19 to 77% with S. arvensis but only 20 to 25% with C. album. Rapeseed yield reductions caused by mixtures of both weed species ranged from being less than to being equal to the sum of reductions caused by each weed alone, depending on the weed density and year of study. Both weed species were prolific seed producers capable of returning large quantities of seed to the soil. With weed densities ranging from 10–80 plants m−2, S. arvensis produced 5700–30 100 seeds m−2 while C. album produced 3100–63 600 seeds m−2.
