Beschreibung: Here we present a case study of three cold-water coral mounds in a juvenile growth stage on top of the Pen Duick Escarpment in the Gulf of Cadiz; Alpha, Beta and Gamma mounds. Although cold-water corals are a common feature on the adjacent cliffs, mud volcanoes and open slope, no actual living cold-water coral has been observed. This multidisciplinary and integrated study comprises geophysical, sedimentological and (bio)geochemical data and aims to present a holistic view on the interaction of both environmental and geological drivers in cold-water coral mound development in the Gulf of Cadiz. Coring data evidences (past or present) methane seepage near the Pen Duick Escarpment. Several sources and pathways are proposed, among which a stratigraphic migration through uplifted Miocene series underneath the escarpment. The dominant morphology of the escarpment has influenced the local hydrodynamics within the course of the Pliocene, as documented by the emplacement of a sediment drift. Predominantly during post-Middle Pleistocene glacial episodes, favourable conditions were present for mound growth. An additional advantage for mound formation near the top of Pen Duick Escarpment is presented by seepage-related carbonate crusts which might have offered a suitable substrate for coral settling. The spatially and temporally variable character and burial stage of the observed open reef frameworks, formed by cold-water coral rubble, provides a possible model for the transition from cold-water coral reef patches towards juvenile mound. These rubble "graveyards" not only act as sediment trap but also as micro-habitat for a wide range of organisms. The presence of a fluctuating Sulphate-Methane Transition Zone has an important effect on early diagenetic processes, affecting both geochemical and physical characteristics, transforming the buried reef into a solid mound. Nevertheless, the responsible seepage fluxes seem to be locally variable. As such, the origin and evolution of the cold-water coral mounds on top of the Pen Duick Escarpment is, probably more than any other NE Atlantic cold-water coral mound province, located on the crossroads of environmental (hydrodynamic) and geological (seepage) pathways.

Notizen: Abstract For the first time, a conventional analysis of C-banded karyotypes was carried out in two distantly related diplopod species; this revealed an impressive percentage of heterochromatin in both genomes. In Acanthopetalum sicanum (Order Callipodida) (2n = 12), heterochromatin constitutes about 60% of the total DNA in females and 56% in males, whereas in Enologus oxypygum (Order Julida) (2n = 22) it is about 67% in both sexes. Heterochromatin of the two species was found to be similar in base composition (AT rich) and heterochromatin distribution, indicating that it has accumulated in a species-specific manner. Sex-determining mechanisms of the XY type were detected in both A. sicanum and E. oxypygum. In A. sicanum, the Y presented the lowest heterochromatic content of all chromosomes in the karyotype, whereas the X presented the highest.

Notizen: Abstract In the present study, somatic metaphase chromosomes of the millipede Enologus oxypygum (Diplopoda: Julida) were hybridized in situ with a sea urchin (Echinodermata) ribosomal probe (prRl4) in order to map major RNA genes (rDNA). Chromosomal preparations were also silver stained (Ag-NOR) to evaluate the rDNA transcriptional activity. Our results indicate that RNA genes are throughout heterochromatin in eight chromosomes involving 1/4 of the total heterochromatin which, in this species, is about 67% of the total DNA. Ag-NOR and FISH patterns were not coincident.

Notizen: Abstract Mitotic metaphase chromosomes of the scarab beetle Thorectes intermedius (Costa) (Coleoptera Scarabaeoidea: Geotrupidae) were analyzed using various banding methods and fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) with a ribosomal probe. The results obtained indicate that silver and CMA3 staining are unable to localize the chromosome sites of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs). Such an inadequacy is a consequence of the extensive silver and CMA3 stainability of both constitutive heterochromatin and heterochromatin associated to the NORs.

Beschreibung: An algorithm was developed to solve the following problem: given the characteristics of the engine to be used to make a finite burn maneuver and given the desired orbit, when must the engine be ignited and what must be the orientation of the thrust vector so as to obtain the desired orbit? The desired orbit is characterized by classical elements and functions of these elements whereas the control parameters are characterized by the time to initiate the maneuver and three direction cosines which locate the thrust vector. The algorithm was built with a Monte Carlo capability whereby samples are taken from the distribution of errors associated with the estimate of the state and from the distribution of errors associated with the engine to be used to make the maneuver.
