Description / Table of Contents: The Influence of the Alkyl Substituents on Copper(II) Extraction by 1-Alkyl-2(2-hydroxyphenyl)-Δ2-imidazolinesIn acid solution (pH ≤ 4) 1-alkyl-2(2-hydroxyphenyl)-Δ2-imidazolines (RLH) form cations RLH2+ and copper(II) chelates of the type Cu(RNNO)2. Therefore in the course of the copper(II) extraction the addition of two ligands RLH and the elimination of four protons are expected. For systems with BuLH as an extractant this prediction is confirmed by slope-analysis (lg DCu vs. lg co,BuLH and lg DCu vs. pH). But in extraction systems of OcLH and DodLH, depending on the concentration of RLH, the slope of lg DCu vs. lg co,RLH is not higher than 1 or even 0. The reason is that the copper(II) extraction is preceded by the formation of the complexes \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm Cu}\left[{\left({{\rm R}\mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus {\rm HNOH}} \right){\rm X}^ \ominus } \right]^{2 \oplus } $\end{document} (III) and \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm Cu}\left[{\left({{\rm R}\mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus {\rm HNOH}} \right){\rm X}^ \ominus } \right]_2 ^{2 \oplus } $\end{document} (IV) in the aqueous phase. Among other reasons the concentration of III and IV depends on the tendency of RLH2⊕ to form ion pairs \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \left({{\rm R}\mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus {\rm HNOH}} \right){\rm X}^ \ominus $\end{document} (I). This tendency increases with the length of the alkyl chains and for the anions in the order SO42- ≤ NO3- ≤ ClO4-. Such quantities of III and IV which are essential for the course of the extraction are formed only with the extractants OcLH and DodLH, but not with BuLH.In general a variation of peripheric alkyl chains in metal extractants changes only the distribution coefficients of the corresponding metal chelates. But in the series BuLH, OcLH, DodLH both the distribution coefficients and the extraction process as a whole are changed. Some influence of the partial deprotonation of III and IV on the extraction curves is observed.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of the Alkyl Chain on Protolysis, Complex Formation, and Extraction Properties of N-Substituted 2-(Δ2-Imidazolin-2-yl)-phenolsN-substituted 2-(Δ2-imidazolin-2-yl)-phenols RNNOH may be used as extractants of copper(II) from acidic solutions. In an aqueous phase they are existent as betains \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm R}\mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus {\rm HNO}^ \ominus $\end{document} (IIa). Solvents with lower dielectricity constants (dioxane-water-mixtures) favour the neutral acid RNNOH (IIb) a tautomer of IIa.The protonation of IIa or IIb proceeds in a weakly acidic solution. Therefore, at 3 ≤ pH ≤ 4 which is favourable for copper(II) extraction, the extractants exist as the cations [RNHNOH]+. The octyl compound OcNNOH from such a solution is extracted by chloroform, less effective by toluene, as an ion pair \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ [{\rm Oc}\mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus {\rm HNOH]X} $\end{document}. The distribution coefficient increases in the order HSO4- 〈 NO3- 〈 ClO4- which is well-known for quaternary ammonium salts. The affinity of the ion pairs, which are derived from the butyl compound BuNNOH, to organic solvents is very weak independently of the anion. For solubility reasons a study of the formation of the trans-planar copper(II) chelates Cu(RNNO)2 is possible only in dioxane-water mixtures. Because of lg K1 ≥ lg k2 + 2 the stability regions of Cu(RNNO)+ and CU(RNNO)2 are clearly separated. The distribution coefficients of Cu(RNNO)2 increase with the length of R exceeding that of the free ligand by one power of ten and more.
IIb erfolgt in schwach saurer Lösung.

Description / Table of Contents: Sulfonamides with Heterocyclic Substituents as Extractants for Copper(II)With 2-picolylbenzenesulfonamide (N2NHO2SC6H5) as a model of the technical extractant LIX 34, the influence of functional variations on the extraction of copper(II) is studied and estimated by a comparison of the pH1/2 values. The relation pH1/2∼-σp is observed for extractants with substituents in p-position of the benzene ring. Turning to 2-pyridylethylbenzenesulfonamide, which forms six-membered rings, an increase of pH1/2 is observed. But no direct comparison is possible with 2-pyridylbenzenesulfonamide as the copper(II) complexes are dimeric having a structure analogous to copper(II) acetate. The substitution of the methylene group by an SO2-(PSA—H) or an NH-residue (PTSH—H) is connected with an with an increase of pH1/2 in the first case, but a decrease of pH1/2 in the second one (7,25 and 2,70). The application of PTSH—H as an extractant for copper(II) is confined by a slow redox reaction with this ion.π-electron delocalization within the chelate rings, which are derived from sulfonylhydrazones of heterocyclic ketones, is a factor which, in general, improves the extraction properties. There is a strong differentiation of PH1/2 (APSH—H 1,4; BBSH—H 6,9). An increase of the tetrahedral distortion of the chromophore CuN4, as it is indicated by ESR, measurements, is connected with a decrease of pH1/2.The benzenesulfonyl group influences the copper(II) extraction by bidentate nitrogen containing ligands in a twofold may: The protonation of the pyridyl and also that of other heterocyclic residues is rendered more difficult, but NH-acidity is increased. Some of the new extractants (APSH—H, BPSH—H) are as active as LIX reagents.

Description / Table of Contents: Azomethine and Oxime Groups as Constituents of Chelating Sulfonamides and Their Specific Influence on the Structure of 3d-Element ComplexesBidentate azomethine or oxime substituted sulfonamides with the donor set Nsp2\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \ominus $\end{document}N (SI—H, SA—H, TABO—H, OAS—H, D—H) form neutral 1,2-complexes which are stable to oxidation. The structure of the cobalt(II) compounds remarkably depends on the type of the ligand. The oximes yield planar low-spin complexes, but the azomethines tetrahedral high-spin ones, Evidently the planar species are stabilized by a system of intramolecular hydrogen bonds including the hydroxy groups of the oxime ligators. In the octahedral chelates Ni(PCSI)2 and Co(PCSI)2 p-toluensulfonamido-o-phenylene-2-pyridine aldimine (PCSI—H) has the function of a tridentate ligand, but is only bidentate in Fe(PCSI)2 and Mn(PCSI)2. In the latter case no coordination of the sulfonamido group is observed which is normal for iron(II) and manganese(II).The tricyclic tetradentate ligend bis[o-(p-toluenesulfonamido)benzophenonen]-ethylendiimirie (SBEI-2) forms the planar chelate Ni(SBE1);in Co(SBE1) und Cu(SBE1) the coordination sphere is tetrahedrally distorted. The discussion of the molecular structure of the new complexes is basod on VIS/NIR spectra, polarographic half-wave potentials, ESCA data, and the ESR spectra of some copper(II) complexes.

Description / Table of Contents: Sulfonamide Substituted Thionocompounds as Ligands in Copper(II) Chelates and as Extractants for the Late 3d-Element IonsWith copper(II) thiono ligands containing arenesulfonamido or arenesulfonylhydrazido functions as a second donor group (STAT-, PST-, BPTS-, BMTH-, and TPTH-, meaning of the abbreviations see text) react in a different way. Normal 1,2-chelates are formed by PST-, BMTH-, and TPTH-. But the reactions with STAT- and BPTS- are connected with a redox process and copper(I) complexes are obtained. PST- is an flexidentate ligand, forming both five- and four-membered chelate rings. Probably the formation of the two Cu(PST)2 isomeres depends on this property. The new chelates are characterized by ESR and ESCA spectra. As extractants for copper(II), the compounds STAT-H, BPTS-H, and BPTH-H, forming five- or six-membered rings, are comparable to the arenesulfonylthioureas which form only four-membered ones. But PST-H is an attractive extractant for copper(II), nickel(II), cobalt(II), and zinc(II). As to the pH1/2 values PST-H reaches the widely used extractant dithizone.

Description / Table of Contents: Thermal Behavior and Thermochromism of Transition Metal Complexes of Pyridyl Substituted SulfonamidesThe thermal behavior of 1,2-complexes of nickel(II), copper(II) and cobalt(II) with pyridyl substituted sulfonamides (N1NHSO2PhH, N2NHSO2PhH, N3NHSO2PhH and N1SO2NHPhH) is studied between 20° and 600°C by TG, DTG, and DTA and more precisely characterized by identification of volatile decomposition products. In general the thermal decomposition starts by the reaction of one of the ligands with coordinated water or with the water vapor of air. Undecomposed N1NHSO2PhH and N3NHSO2PhH pass over to the vapor-phase, in the other cases the elimination is connected with a hydrolytic cleavage of the ligand. The thermal decomposition of Ni(N1NSO2PhH)2(NH3)2 is initiated by a transamidation.A study of Ni(N1NSO2PhH)2 demonstrates the influence of reaction conditions on the course of thermal decomposition. As far as milligram amounts are used, hydrolysis by the water vapor of air is dominating; but sulfur dioxide is eliminated when working in a preperative scale. The thermochromism of Ni(N2NSO2PhMe)2(H2O)2 goes back to the reversible transition of coordination water to lattice water. This is the first example of isomerism of the Lifschitz-type in the field of neutral chelates.

Description / Table of Contents: New Redox Series Based on Transition Metal Complexes of Heterocyclic ArenesulfonylhydrazonesHeterocyclic bidentate arenesulfonylhydrazones (2-acetylpyridine-p-toluenesulfonylhydrazone = APSH—H, 2-acetylquinoline-p-toluenesulfonylhydrazone = ACSH—H) with transition metal ions afford tetrahedral 1,2-complexes MII(APSH)2 and MII(ACSH)2. In most cases the E-isomers of APSH- and ACSH- are coordinated, five-membered chelate rings are formed with the pyridine and hydrazone nitrogen atoms as donor atoms. In the complexes Zn(APSH)2 and Cu(APSH)2 probably the Z-isomer of APSH- is present with the pyridine and the sulfonylamide nitrogen atoms as a donor set, yielding a six-membered chelate ring. These proposals are based on the magnetic moments, the ligand field spectra, and the binding energies (ESCA).Normally the complexes MII(APSH)2 and MII(ACSH)2 are reduced in two reversible steps. For Fe(APSH)2 and Fe(ACSH)2 a third anodic wave, but for Cu(APSH)2 only one wave is observed. Relations between redox properties and structure of the new complexes are discussed, and the redox series are compared with that of the M(dipy)3n+-type complexes.

Description / Table of Contents: The Influence of Benzylsubstituents on the Basicity and the Coordination Behavior of Amino Acids - Copper(II) Extraction by N,N-Dibenzyl-glycineIn amino acids the benzyl group is a strongly electron withdrawing ligand. This is demonstrated both by the pka values of N,N-dibenzyl-glycine (II), N-benzylalanine (III), and N,N′-dibenzylethylenediamine-N,N′-diacetic acid (IV) and by the stability of the corresponding transition metal complexes. Thus, compared to N,N-diethyl-glycine or N-methyl-alanine the pka values of II and III are lowered by 2.5 or 1.2 units. On account of the low pka2 value, in aqueous solutions of IV a bonding of the first proton to a nitrogen atom, but that of the second one to a carboxylate group is discussed. The transition metal complexes of II and III are considerably more instable than that of N,N-diethyl-glycine or N-methyl-alanine. With the anion of II, both in solution and in the solid state, the formation of copper(II) chelates, but not of the corresponding nickel(II) and cobalt(II) compounds was proved.Because of the solubility of II and its copper(II) chelate in chloroform, this amino acid may be used as a copper extractant (pH1/2 = 3.5).

Description / Table of Contents: Cyclic α, β-Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds as Ligands in Nickel (0) Complexes. As a result of the reaction of (Cy3P)2Ni(C2H4) with p-benzoquinone (p-CH) or maleic anhydride (MSA), nickel(II)-complexes of radical anions are formed which are derived from PCy3 and p-CH or MSA by an equimolecular coupling. With other cyclic α, β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds (L = 1,4-naphthoquinone, substituted α- and γ-pyrones, substituted coumarins) no comparable reactions proceed in the coordination sphere of nickel(0) phosphine complexes. But depending on the phosphine and on the substrate compounds of the types (R3P)2NiL or (R3P)NiL are obtained. Taking the substituted coumarins for an example, it was demonstrated that the latter type is favoured by bulky phosphines (PCy3) and by coumarins with a high π-acceptor strength. The i.r. spectra of the complexes (R3P)NiL are in accordance with an η3(C=C,O)-bridging function of α, β-unsaturated carbonyl ligands and therefore with an oligomeric structure. For the complexes (R3P)2NiL and (dipy)NiL an η2(C=C) or a pseudo-η3 (C=C,C) coordination of the ligands is discussed.Of special interest are the compounds (Cy3P)Ni(DMP) and (Cy3P)Ni(BDH) (DMP = 2, 6-dimethyl-γ-pyrone, BDH = 2-benzylidene-1, 3-dioxo-hydrindene). Possibly the substituted γ-pyrone is an η6-ligand in (Cy3,P)Ni(DMP). (Cy3,P)Ni(BDH) is considered to be a nickel(II) chelate of a diva-lent anion which is derived from BDH by the uptake of two electrons. In this connection the limits for a classification of the new complexes as nickel(0) or nickel(II) compounds are mentioned. The polarographic half-wave potentials are applied to an estimation of the reactivity of the α, β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds related to nickel(0) complexes.

Description / Table of Contents: Oxidation of Nickel(0) Complexes by Cyclic Imides of Dicarbonic AcidsNormally, phthalimide (PI—H) or succinimide (SI—H) react with nickel(0) complexes  -  (dipy)Ni(COD) or (Ph3P)2Ni(C2H4)  -  by oxidative addition. The reaction of PI—H and the strong reductant (dipy)Ni(COD) is initiated by a one-electron transfer. Depending on the solvent, the resulting ion pair affords (dipy)NiI(PI) by spontaneous fragmentation or (dipy)NiII(H)(PI) by cage collaps. No interaction is found between the weak reductant (Ph3P)Ni(C2H4) and PI—H.Phosphine-containing nickel(0) complexes are electrophilically attacked by the acid NH group of SI—H. Hydrido complexes of nickel(0), such as (Cy3P)2Ni(H)(SI), or secondary products of them, such as [(SI)Ni(THF)]2NH, are formed. On the other hand, the reaction with (dipy)Ni(COD) affords only the binuclear substitution product [(dipy)Ni]2(SI—H)(THF).In solution prolongated heating of (dipy)Ni(PI)(THF)0,5 results in a partial decarbonylation. In contrast to the reaction of (dipy)Ni(COD) and cyclic carbonic acid anhydrides, no definite metalla rings but by an interaction with the solvent, benzamide is formed. With (dipy)Ni(COD) maleinimide does not react like on NH-acidic compound but like a polar olefine by substitution.
