Notes: Abstract An earlier published concept, showing correlations between the “average lattice energy” of glasses (i.e. their mean molar atomization enthalpy ΔA H at 298 K), the network dimensionalityD and some properties of different chalcogenide and oxide glasses, was used to interpret the transformation temperaturesT g of glasses containing fluorine or nitrogen instead of oxygen. A plot of Tg vs. ΔA H allows the comparison of completely different glasses from only one graph. Such a consistent evaluation of composition/property relationships is useful for the further improvement of fluoride and nitride glasses, which are important for applications in optics and telecommunications and as quality-limiting components in silicon nitride-based ceramics.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of endogenous 3-hydroxylipins (3-OH oxylipins) in representatives of the Mucorales was mapped using immunofluorescence microscopy. Strains of each of the following genera were examined: Absidia, Actinomucor, Cunninghamella, Mortierella (subgenus Micromucor), Mortierella (subgenus Mortierella), Mucor and Rhizomucor. Immunofluorescence microscopy was carried out using an antibody that was raised against 3R-hydroxy-5Z,8Z,11Z,14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid (3R-HETE), which cross-reacts with other 3-OH oxylipins. Subsequently, the occurrence and distribution of the antibody on the various reproductive stages of each fungus was noted. In Absidia, Actinomucor, Mortierella (subgenus Micromucor), Mucor and Rhizomucor, 3-OH oxylipins were found to be associated with the columellae and/or wall of the sporangium. In the representative of Cunninghamella, the 3-OH oxylipins were associated with the single-spored sporangiola. No 3-OH oxylipins were detected in the strains representing Mortierella (subgenus Mortierella).

Description / Table of Contents: Correlations between Properties of Chalcogenide Glasses. I. The System Germanium - Antimony - SulphurGlass formation and properties of the glasses in the system Ge-Sb-S are described. The limits of the glass-forming region correspond approximately to the lines joining GeS, GeS3 and Sb2S3 in the composition diagram. The results indicate two regions of liquid immiscibility, both at high sulphur and high antimony contents. The densities increase linearly with the average molecular weights per formula-unit of the glasses. Glass transition temperatures are in the range from 200 to 350°C, and values of Vickers hardness between 150 and 300 kp/mm2 have been measured. Both properties are in a linear relationship with the approximate values for the atomization energies of the glasses.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of the Composition of Mixed Solvents on the Stability and Formation Constants of Copper (II) and Nickel(II) Complexes of Substituted 1,2-DioximesThe stability constants cK1, cK2, and cβ2 of the complexes which are formed in the systems M2+/DH2, M2+/Ac—DH2, and M2+/Et, Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH2 (M2+ = Cu2+, Ni2+; DH2, Ac—DH2, Et2Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH2 = 1,2-dioximes) are determined in water and in water-dioxane mixtures (25, 50 and 75 per cent). Because of the stabilisation of the l,2-complexes by intramolecular hydrogen bonds cK2, is always higher than cK1.On account of the decrease of the dielectricity constant the constants cK1, cK2, and cβ2, rise with increasing contents of dioxane in the mixtures. The influence of the dielectricity constant may be eliminated by considering the formation constants cK1(B), cK2(B), and cβ2(B). The individual formation constants cK1(B) of the 1,l-complexes investigated are independent of the composition of the solvent, but among the overall formation constants cβ2(B) this comes true only for the complexes Ni(Ac—DH)2, Ni(Et2Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH)2, and Cu(Et2Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH)2. With Cu(DH2) and Cu(Ac—DH)2 a linear relation between log cβ2(B) and the molar fraction of water is stated. This effect is attributed to a specific solvatation of the chelates Cu(DH)2 and Cu(Ac—DH)2 by water.

Description / Table of Contents: Correlations between Properties of Chalcogenide Glasses. II. The System Germanium-Antimony-SeleniumThe glass formation, preferably in the subsystem Sb2Se3—GeSe2—GeSe, is investigated applying defined melting conditions. Densities ϱ, molar volumina V̄ and transformation temperatures Tg of the glasses are more influenced by structural peculiarities, than in the case of Ge—Sb—S glasses with identical composition. The densities are analysed by means of a plot of V̄ versus M̄, the molecular weight per formula unit of the glasses. The Tg values are interpreted on the basis of their relationship with the atomization enthalpies ΔAH of the samples. The glasses Ge—Sb—Se have lower Tg values than analogous samples Ge—Sb—S.

Description / Table of Contents: N-(β-Hydroxy-ethyl)-β-alanine (III), 2-(β-hydroxy-ethylamino)-terephathalic acid (IV) and 2,5-bis-(β-hydroxy-ethylamino)-terephathalic acid (V) behave as tridentate ligands against Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) ions forming 1,1 and 1,2 complexes, some of which occur in the protonated form. The stability constants of the 1,2 chelates were found to be smaller than those of the 1,1 chelates. The aliphatic ligand III yields more instable complexes than the aromatic compounds IV and V.
