Notes: High-resolution triple-crystal x-ray scattering techniques have been used to study high-temperature superconducting thin films of Gd-Ba-Cu-O grown in situ by dc magnetron sputtering onto substrates of (001) LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. The measurements suggest that the thin films are single crystal. Evidence is found for both c- and a-axis-oriented films on the LaAlO3 samples. In particular, no strain is observed in the films except at the interface between films of different relative orientation. No low-temperature structural transitions are observed in the films.

Notes: The crystal structure of deuterated benzene has been investigated over the complete temperature range 4–280 K. Our results are in excellent agreement with previous studies, recorded at a limited number of temperatures, and display a smooth variation of the lattice parameters over the complete temperature range. No evidence of the suggested low-temperature phase transitions, or marked premelting effects have been found. Detailed measurements of the lattice parameters close to the melting point display an anomalous behavior of the b lattice parameter and the orientation of the molecules which is believed to be evidence of a disordering transition at temperatures above the melting point.

Notes: Extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are reported for benzene-d6, based on the potential of Karlström et al. [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 105, 3777 (1983)], linearly rescaled. Three phenomena have been identified as a function of temperature, a solid state structural phase transition, a lattice instability, and melting. The simulations clarify that the first two phenomena are distinct from premelting; they rationalize some of our recent experimental data, and lead to a suggestion for further experiments to substantiate these phenomena. Rescaling the ab initio potential gave lattice parameters and an internal energy in very good accord with experiment across a wide temperature range. The MD lattice instability at 335 K was shown not to be true melting, the melting point being found at 272 K using a system with free surfaces. This result, the latent heat and volume discontinuity at melting, and the thermal motion amplitudes were all found to be in very good agreement with experiment. The first high-pressure phase of benzene was also successfully modeled by the potential, giving excellent values for the structural parameters. A MD result not found in experiment is a disordering transition in which the distinction between the orientations of pairs of molecules in the unit cell is lost. Experimental data appears to show that the same effect would be seen in real benzene were the solid not to melt first. It has also been shown that the application of moderate pressures may make the transition more apparent experimentally.

Notes: The use of an imaging plate as a two-dimensional (2-D) detector removes many of the difficulties that arise in performing angle-dispersive powder diffraction at high pressures in a diamond-anvil cell. Due to the 2-D nature of the imaging plate, a substantial part of each Debye Scherrer ring is intercepted and recorded. The averaging of the intensities around a ring so as to create a conventional one-dimensional (1-D) powder pattern results in a significant improvement in counting statistics and powder averaging, both severe problems in high-pressure diffraction due to the very small sample volumes involved. For an accurately known plate geometry the 2-D to 1-D conversion is straightforward; however, considerable complications arise when inaccuracies in plate to sample distance, plate orientations, poor powder averaging/preferred orientation, and the presence of diamond Bragg spots are considered. The current status of the software used to analyze the imaging plate data is presented along with test data to illustrate its use.

Notes: An imaging-plate system designed for the full Rietveld refinement of crystal structures at high pressure is described. Emphasis is given to techniques that have been developed to obtain data free from contaminating diffraction peaks. Initial results from studies of III–V semiconductors and La2CuO4 are given.

Notes: X-ray rocking curve analysis is a powerful and nondestructive technique for the characterization of heteroepitaxial structures. Conventionally, measurements are performed in symmetrical scattering geometry using a double-crystal x-ray diffractometer but the technique can be extended to the study of very thin layers (〈200 A(ring)) by the use of glancing-incidence scattering geometry and a triple-crystal diffractometer. These structures can also be studied by the technique of total external x-ray reflectivity. This is sensitive to the electron-density profile of the heterostructure as a function of depth. By combining the above techniques we have found it possible to obtain structural information on layers as thin as 20 A(ring). Such measurements permit accurate measurement of individual layer thicknesses and interface roughnesses on the angstrom level. The lattice parameter strain can be obtained by modeling of the intensity distribution of the crystal truncation rod.

Notes: We have observed x-ray intensity oscillation fringes around low index Bragg reflections in a YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) thin film. By employing a combination of crystal truncation rod interference fringe measurements and x-ray reflectivity using synchrotron radiation, we have been able to probe the structures of highly oriented [001] YBCO grown on [001] SrTiO3 substrates. The results demonstrate the presence of a thin disordered surface layer, the excellent coherence between the YBCO surface and the film-substrate interface, the presence of a small (3.2×10−4) interfacial strain existing in the YBCO film. This strain exists close to the film-substrate interface and extends approximately 300 Å into the micron-thick film. Our results demonstrate that high quality detailed information can be obtained, nondestructively, from thin film superconductors of thicknesses typically used for microwave and other applications. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The structure of V2TiO5 involves a distribution of the two metal species between two crystallographic sites. The sites between the shear planes are occupied solely by vanadium as VIII, while the shear-plane sites are occupied by both metal atom species, vanadium and titanium. An analysis of the metal-oxygen distances could not distinguish between the two reasonable alternatives for the valency distribution, viz VIII/TiIV or VIV/TiIII. By examining the XANES spectra of the title compound at both vanadium and titanium K edges the valency distribution can be confidently assigned as VIII/TiIV. The usefulness of XANES spectroscopy for solving similar problems involving valency ambiguity is evident.
