    Notes: The present study examined the moderating effect of rater personality – extroversion and sensitivity to others – on the relations between selection interview ratings and measures of candidate self-monitoring (SM) and social anxiety (SA). In a real-life military selection procedure setting in which 445 candidates and 93 raters participated, rater extroversion moderated the relation between candidate SM and selection interview ratings so that this relation was negative for raters low on extroversion and positive for raters high on extroversion. Rater extroversion was also found to moderate the negative relation between candidate SA and selection interview ratings. No support was found for the moderating effect of rater sensitivity to others. An explanation of the moderating effect of rater extroversion based on the assumption that extroversion is negatively related to critical interpersonal sensitivity was suggested.

    Notes: Metalorganic remote plasma chemical vapor deposited SiO2/Al2O3 stacks were deposited on 6H p-type silicon SiC to fabricate a high-k gate stack SiC metal–oxide–semiconductor capacitors. Capacitance–voltage (C–V) and current–voltage (I–V) measurements were performed. C–V characteristics showed excellent properties at room and higher temperatures. Samples exhibited a slight negative flatband shift from which the net oxide charge (Qox) was calculated. Low leakage currents were observed even at high temperatures. I–V characteristics of Al2O3 were superior to those observed on AlN and SiO2 dielectrics on SiC. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), is the most economically damaging aphid pest of wheat in the southern Great Plains of the USA. In this study, the single, dominant greenbug resistance gene, Gb3, was molecularly tagged and genetically mapped using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and simple sequence repeat(SSR) markers. Three AFLP loci were associated with the Gb3 locus in linkage analysis with 75 F2:3 families from the cross between two near-isogenic lines (NILs) for Gb3,‘TXGBE273’ and ‘TXGBE281′. Two of these loci, XMgcc Pagg and Xmagg Patg cosegregate with Gb3 in the population analysed. Further analysis indicated that XMgcc Pagg and Xmagg Patg are specific for the Gb3 locus in diverse genetic backgrounds. Two SSR markers, Xgwm111 and Xgwm428 previously mapped in wheat chromosome 7D, were shown to be linked with Gb3, 22.5 cM and 33.1 cM from Gb3, respectively, in an F2 population of ‘Largo’בTAM 107’, suggesting that Gb3 is located in the long arm of chromosome 7D. The two AFLP markers cosegregating with Gb3 are valuable tools in developing molecular markers for marker-assisted selection of greenbug resistance in wheat breeding.

    Notes: The growth dynamics of vessel formation and the effect of auxin transport inhibition on vessel differentiation were investigated in the pedicel of developing apple (Malus domestica Borkh.). Quantitative microscopic analysis showed that a majority of vessels were differentiated pre-bloom with the commencement of pedicel extension but that the full conducting capacity of the xylem was attained shortly after bloom. The effect of a post-bloom application of N-(1-Napthyl)phthalamic acid showed that an auxin-like signal emanating from the young fruit not only stimulated vessel differentiation in the pedicel but also controlled fruit abscission and the development of the seed and fruit.

    Notes: Abstract Thyroid hormone is essential for normal development, differentiation, and metabolic balance. Thyroid hormone action is mediated by multiple thyroid hormone receptor isoforms derived from two distinct genes. The thyroid hormone receptors belong to a nuclear receptor superfamily that also includes receptors for other small lipophilic hormones. Thyroid hormone receptors function by binding to specific thyroid hormone-responsive sequences in promoters of target genes and by regulating transcription. Thyroid hormone receptors often form heterodimers with retinoid X receptors. Heterodimerization is regulated through distinct mechanisms that together determine the specificity and flexibility of the sequence recognition. Amino-terminal regions appear to modulate thyroid hormone receptor function in an isoform-dependent manner. Unliganded thyroid hormone receptor represses transcription through recruitment of a corepressor complex, which also includes Sin3A and histone deacetylase. Ligand binding alters the conformation of the thyroid hormone receptor in such a way as to release the corepressor complex and recruit a coactivator complex that includes multiple histone acetyltransferases, including a steroid receptor family coactivator, p300/CREB-binding protein-associated factor (PCAF), and CREB binding protein (CBP). The existence of histone-modifying activities in the transcriptional regulatory complexes indicates an important role of chromatin structure. Stoichiometric, structural, and sequence-specific rules for coregulator interaction are beginning to be understood, as are aspects of the tissue specificity of hormone action. Moreover, knockout studies suggest that the products of two thyroid hormone receptor genes mediate distinct functions in vivo. The increased understanding of the structure and function of thyroid hormone receptors and their interacting proteins has markedly clarified the molecular mechanisms of thyroid hormone action.

    Notes: Abstract The major transcriptional factors involved in the adipogenic process include proteins belonging to the CCAAT/enhancer binding protein family, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, and adipocyte determination and differentiation dependent factor 1, also known as sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1. This process has been characterized with the aid of cell lines that represent various stages in the path of adipocyte commitment, ranging from pluripotent mesodermal fibroblasts to preadipocytes. Molecular analyses have led to a cascade model for adipogenesis based on timed expression of CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma. Gene targeting and transgenic-mouse technologies, which allow the manipulation of endogenous genes for these transcription factors, have also contributed to the understanding of adipogenesis. This review aims to integrate this information to gain an understanding of the transcriptional regulation of fat cell formation.

    Notes: Down-faulting at the north-west margins of the Gulf of Aqaba is inferred to have triggered a catastrophic sedimentary event at 2.3 ka that killed the Elat fringing coral reef. Whereas segments of the Holocene reef were perfectly fossilized and preserved beneath a veneer of siliciclastic sediments, other segments were abraded, settled by nomads, and later re-submerged under 4 m of water. Repeated damage triggered by down-throwing earthquakes degenerate the fringing reefs of the north-west end of the gulf. Conversely, on the north-eastern and southern parts of the gulf, where earthquakes uplift the margins, modern reefs are thriving, attached to uplifted fossil reef terraces. Therefore, coastal subsidence moderates the development of fringing coral reefs during the late Holocene sea-level stand still.
