    Description / Table of Contents: Europe provides an outstanding field laboratory for studying lithospheric processes through time, for tracing the tectonic evolution of crust and mantle from the present far back into the early Precambrian. Two things are particularly striking: the importance of plate tectonics during the Phanerozoic and through the Proterozic into the Archeaen, and the significance of tectonic inheritance, older structures and rheologies guiding the younger evolution. 'European Lithosphere Dynamics' grew out of a major European Science Foundation programme, EUROPROBE, with participation of many hundreds of Earth scientists from all over Europe. The main research activities focused on specific target areas and involved integration of geological, geophysical and geochemical methods. Defining surface-depth relationships was a prerequisite for interpretation of the processes, present and past, responsible for the formation of the lithosphere. This Memoir addresses the major features of the European lithosphere and is aimed at giving the reader an overview of their development and growth during three billion years of Earth history.

    Description / Table of Contents: The sustainable development of minerals, whick are non-renewable resources, is a major challenge in today's world. In this regard the true definition of sustainability' is a debating point itself: can such a concept exist with respect to non-renewable resources? Perhaps the ideal sustainability model is one that minimizes negative environmental impact and maximizes benefits to society, the economy and regional/national development. Developed and near-developed economies rely for commodity supplies on developing countries where major mining operations are often a mainstay of the domestic economy. Limited environmental regulation and low wages lead to charges of exploitation. also, large numbers of people have no alternative to living ny informal, often dangerous, 'artisanal' mining. This Special Publication gives examples from developing countries at all scales of mineral extraction. The volume reviews environmental, economic, health and social problems and highlights the need to solve these before sustainability can be achieved. The better solutions require mutual understanding, through full involvement of all stakeholders, education, training and investment so that small-scale ansd artisinal mines can grow into well-managed operations. At larger scales, most major interantional mining companies have now inoproved their practices and are monitoring their [rogress, although there is no room for complacency in this rapidly changing are.

    Description: Velocity and temperature time series from Hudson Submarine Canyon and hydrographic surveys of seven canyons of the Middle Atlantic Bight indicate that the effects of storms, tides, and incoming internal waves are intensified in submarine canyons. Storms with strong eastward and westward wind stress were found to cause strong upwelling and downwelling through the upper layers of Hudson Canyon. Storm-forced upwelling also caused strong down-canyon flows at the canyon floor. Internal waves were found to be concentrated in the canyon head and near the floor, in agreement with theoretical predictions. Slope water apparently circulates slowly through the outer part of the canyon and is mixed in near-floor layers which could be caused by breaking internal waves. Internal tides are generated at the floor in the central part of the canyon. Oscillations at tidal frequencies dominate the near-floor velocity field below the thermocline, and are accompanied by high-frequency spikes that may be nonlinear interface waves propagating on the top of the bottom mixed layer. A numerical model was used to calculate mixing in the canyon's bottom boundary layer caused by an unstable density gradient during flood tide. Energetic internal wave activity is apparently responsible for sediment sorting in the canyon head; the internal waves become more energetic as the sediment grain size increases. Below the thermocline, the tidal oscillations vary in amplitude with the phases of the moon; the observed deposition of mud can easily occur during weeks of low velocity.

    Notes: Based on the concept of the interaction between a magnetic and electric field, a magneticfield was suppressed on the Electrochemical Machining (ECM) setup to improve the copyingaccuracy of ECM. Mathematical modeling and finite element modeling of the magnetic field wasalso developed using ANSYS to study the influence of permanent magnet design on the ECMprocess. The results indicate that by introducing the magnetic field the threshold of electrochemicalreaction is decreased and the tracks of ions become complicated which makes the chemical reactionmore extensive and more uniform in the inter-electrode gap. The distribution of magnetic field inthe gap helps to improve the machining accuracy and the process efficiency, when the permanentmagnet is at the end of the electrodes. Experiments have been carried out to validate the results offinite element analysis and the effect of a magnetic field on the ECM process is discussed

    Notes: During age-hardening of certain Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys, a 90% hardness increase can occur with 75seconds. The clustering and precipitation of solute element species during this early rapidhardening (RH) period has been investigated through atom probe tomography, transmission electronmicroscopy, and Vickers hardness measurements. This study has focussed on the effect of copperby analysing three alloys; Al-2.0Zn-1.8Mg-0.7Cu, Al-2.0Zn-1.7Mg-0.2Cu and Al-1.9Zn-1.7Mg(at.%). The early RH reaction in these alloys accounts for up to 70% of the total hardening (peakhardness minus as-quenched hardness) and takes place during the first 60 seconds of ageing. Wereport preferred solute-solute interactions in the as-quenched materials. This quenched-innanostructure acts as a template for subsequent solute clustering, the nature of which we havecorrelated with ageing

    Notes: The purpose of this experimental research are investigation the growth behaviors of theoxide layer at different pre-dressing conditions in ELID pre-dressing, effects of voltage and dutyratio of the power supply, wheel speed on the oxide layer formation characteristics on the metalbond diamond wheel surface. The results indicated that the oxide layer thickness on the wheelsurface increase with pre-dressing time. The oxide layer growth rate is faster in beginning periodtime of pre-dressing process then slow down. Both the thickness and growth rate of oxide layerincrease with the increase of duty ratio and applied voltage. It takes longer time for oxide layergrowth rate to reach to stable state in lower duty ratio condition than in higher duty ratio condition.There are no effects of wheel speed on oxide layer growth behaviors in the wheel speed range of1000rpm to 4000 rpm

    Notes: Survival risk of new businesses is a challenging issue to incorporate into lost profits analyses used in litigation, an issue some financial experts and courts ignore rather than consider explicitly. This paper considers several ways to make qualitative and quantitative adjustments for the survival rates of new businesses. The paper concludes firm-specific modeling of survival rates is the most appropriate way to weight future economic returns because it offers the best alternative in terms of fitting the analysis to the facts of the case and doing so in a credible and clear manner.
