Description: The advent of second-generation sequencing (2GS) has provided a range of significant new challenges for the visualization of sequence assemblies. These include the large volume of data being generated, short-read lengths and different data types and data formats associated with the diversity of new sequencing technologies. This article illustrates how Tablet—a high-performance graphical viewer for visualization of 2GS assemblies and read mappings—plays an important role in the analysis of these data. We present Tablet, and through a selection of use cases, demonstrate its value in quality assurance and scientific discovery, through features such as whole-reference coverage overviews, variant highlighting, paired-end read mark-up, GFF3-based feature tracks and protein translations. We discuss the computing and visualization techniques utilized to provide a rich and responsive graphical environment that enables users to view a range of file formats with ease. Tablet installers can be freely downloaded from http://bioinf.hutton.ac.uk/tablet in 32 or 64-bit versions for Windows, OS X, Linux or Solaris. For further details on the Tablet, contact tablet@hutton.ac.uk.

Notes: Summary TheM s Rayleigh wave magnitude formula is revised for purposes of eliminating the variable effects of near distances and propagation pats on the values computed from standard long period seismograms. The improved formulation employs a revised distance correction function and period dependent path correction that normalisesM s to large teleseismic distance, 20 second values. The method for computing the path corrections is described. The magnitude scale presented here givesM s values which are within ±0.1 magnitude units of the Gutenberg and Prague magnitude formulae.

Notes: [Auszug] Figure 1 shows the P seismograms (b, e, h] for the event, from Yellowknife, Canada (YKA), Warramunga, Australia (WRA) and Gauribidanur, India (GBA). The YKA and WRA seismograms show two arrivals 7.5 s apart; at WRA the second arrival seems to have reversed polarity relative to P, but the YKA record ...

Notes: [Auszug] Since the construction of the station, the concept of a seismic monitoring and detection system has radically changed. From the requirement of a network of stations spaced some hundreds of kilometres apart, the emphasis now is on a smaller number of low-noise stations working at ranges of several ...

Notes: [Auszug] The seismic waves from this earthquake were registered at UKAEA, Blacknest, by a long period vertical component seismometer and were recorded on one track of a multi-channel magnetic tape system. Other channels of this system were recording the outputs of a number of microbarographs spaced several ...

Notes: On 1986 August 1 a small seismic disturbance occurred to the east of a Soviet nuclear test site at Novaya Zemlya. Reported attempts to identify the nature of the source using only short-period seismological data recorded at regional distances were unsuccessful. However, by using teleseismic P-wave data it is possible to identify the source as an earthquake which occurred within the crust at a depth of 24 km. The source is shown to have a double-couple mechanism with a well-constrained fault-plane solution. The identification as an earthquake is supported by the mb: Ms evidence.

Notes: [Auszug] On the 22 August 1998, 0.1 kilotonnes of conventional explosives was fired underground at the nuclear test site of the former Soviet Union at Degelen Mountain in eastern Kazakhstan. This explosion, which we refer to as K980822, was carried out by the Republic of Kazakhstan, in cooperation with ...

Notes: [Auszug] The Kirnos seismograph is an electromagnetic seismometer with a natural frequency (/0) of 0.04 Hz- and damping factor (n) of 0.5 loosely coupled to a heavily damped galvanometer Oz=8.0, /0 = 0.833 Hz). We obtain the Kirnos response by electronically shaping the output of a Geotech S-ll seismometer ...

Notes: [Auszug] If F (w) and I(w) are the effects of absorption and recording system, respectively, at angular frequency w, I(w) will usually be known for any given recording system and F(w) can be written as an amplitude term exp(?w T/2QAV) and a phase shift. T is the travel time and QAV the effective average Q ...

Notes: [Auszug] The hypothesis has important consequences for the measurement of magnitude (mb) and the proposal made by the United States and the Soviet Union to limit the size of their nuclear weapon tests stimulated further investigations of the idea. There is not an obvious way of doing so because ...
