    Description: Versión electrónica para multimedia del libro Corales Pétreos de Cuba publicado en 1980 por Nereida Martínez Estalella y Vasil Zlatarski. La colección de Corales pétreos se formó en el Instituto de Oceanología entre los años 1970 y 1975. En 2005 pasa a ser custodiada por el Acuario Nacional con el resto de las colecciones biológicas.La colección está formada por 4,990 ejemplares, 2 Clases Anthozoa e Hydrozoa , 16 familias, 30 géneros, 45 especies y 23 formas.Multimedia electronic book version of Stony Corals Cuba published in 1980 by Nereida Martínez Estalella and Vasil Zlatarski.The collection of stony corals are formed at the Institute of Oceanology between 1970 and 1975. Renumbered in 2005 by the National Aquarium guarded with other biological collections. The collection consists of 4,990 samples, 2 classes Anthozoa and Hydrozoa, 16 families, 30 genera, 45 species and 23 forms.

    Description: Larval and early juvenile stages of Symphurus oligomerus aredescribed from 24 specimens from the Gulf of California. Meristic features were 48 – 49 total vertebrae, 87–94dorsal-fin rays, 73–77 anal-fin rays, 12 caudal-fin rays, and five hypural bones. Seven larvae and one juvenile were cleared and stained to obtain the pterygiophore formula (1-3-2-2-2) that confirmed the identification of S. oligomerus. The pigment pattern from preflexion to juvenile stage consists of three bands on the dorsal margin and two bands on the ventral margin formed by star-shaped melanophores on the left side of the body. The intestine in preflexion to postflexion larvae forms an abdominalprojection that ends in a short conical appendix. The intestine is supported by three cartilaginous struts; larvaewith these physical attributes are called exterilium larvae. Preflexion larvae have two elongated dorsal-finrays, and in flexion to postflexion larvae the second to the fourth dorsalfin rays are elongate. We found anapparent connection between the size at metamorphosis of the species of Symphurus and the depth distributionrange of adults such that the fish species that metamorphose at a larger size have a deeper distributionas adults and exterilium larvae seem to correspond to species that have deeper distributions.

    Description: Sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius) and silver seatrout (C.nothus) are both found within the immediate offshore areas of the Gulf of Mexico, especially around Texas; however information is limited on how much distributional overlap really occurs between these species. In order to investigate spatial and seasonal differences between species, we analyzed twenty years of bay and offshore trawl data collected by biologists of the Coastal Fisheries Division, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Sand seatrout and silver seatrout were distributed differently among offshore sampling areas, and salinity and water depth appeared to correlate with their distribution. Additionally,within the northernmost sampling area of the gulf waters, water depth correlated significantly with the presence of silver seatrout, which were found at deeper depths than sandseatrout. There was also an overall significant decrease in silver seatrout abundance during the summer season, when temperatures were at their highest, and this decrease mayhave indicated a migration farther offshore. Sand seatrout abundance had an inverse relationship with salinity and water depth offshore. In addition, sand seatrout abundance was highest in bays with direct passes to the gulf and correlated with corresponding abundance in offshore areas. These data highlight the seasonal and spatial differences in abundance between sand and silver seatrout and relatethese differences to the hydrological and geological features found along the Texas coastline.

    Description: The expansion of aquaculture in the last 10 years has made it an important source of protein worldwide. However, increased production, and the culture intensification it carries, results in higher risk of infectious disease due to poor water quality and high stocking densities. ... Marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) is a plant native to Mexico whose flowers accumulate carotenoids. Natural carotenoids extracted from marigold have been used in aquaculture to help in the survival of fish juvenile stages by strengthening their immunological system, thus reducing mortality rates. The effect of carotenoids in fish health may exert a positive effect on fish growth indices; however, these effects on growth parameters have not been studied in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), which is the most cultured fish species in north-eastern Mexico, and one of the most cultured on the southern United States. Consequently, the aim of this study was to investigate if there were significant differences in growth among channel catfish juveniles when fed diets containing various carotenoid doses from a natural source.

    Description: The maintenance of the endangered Caspian brown trout Salmo trutta caspius populations in Iran depends on its artificial breeding. There is no information on how current hatchery breeding protocol influences effective population size of breeders (Ne), which is a critical parameter to maintain genetic diversity in future generations. The current hatchery protocol (CHP) was comparatively evaluated with a balanced hatchery protocol (BHP), where mixtures of equal amounts of gametes per male and female breeder were used to balance parental contributions to progeny. To evaluate putative differences in viability between families, individual crosses were performed and fertilized ova of different families were mixed to constitute balanced family pools. 1440 alevins were totally sampled in the crosses performed from the 11 breeders. An exclusion-based parentage approach using three polymorphic microsatellite markers unambiguously assigned more than 93% of progeny to a single pair of parents. Significantly different contributions of breeders to progeny were observed in CHP (p〈0.05). The primary constraint on Ne in BHP was the unbalanced contribution of males, which seemed a consequence of sperm competition in mixed fertilization caused by differences in sperm quality. Sperm motility duration was positively correlated with the number of sired progeny by each male. The results illustrate the limitations of the BHP in minimizing the loss of genetic diversity observed in CHP. A protocol based on mixture of equal number of fertilized ova from individual male × female crosses emerged as the best alternative for conservation of Caspian brown trout.

    Description: Esta serie tiene como finalidad dar a conocer las especies presentes en los diferentes estados provinciales. Tomando como base los trabajos de López et al. (2003), Reis et al. (2003), y Liotta (2006), mencionamos para cada territorio los cambios y novedades posteriores a estas publicaciones. Consideramos que este modesto aporte contribuirá a precisar el conocimiento ictiofaunístico regional, ya que, además de las listas de especies, adjuntamos bibliografía de referencia y el marco biogeográfico e hídrico correspondientes, que podrán ser de utilidad para quienes hagan uso de este trabajo.Por otra parte entendemos que la participación de autores involucrados en la región considerada, le da un verdadero sentido federal a esta contribución, además de reforzar vínculos en los protagonistas de nuestra especialidad. En este nuevo número presentamos la provincia de Mendoza que se encuentra limitada al norte por San Juan, al este por San Luis, al sur La Pampa y Neuquén y al oeste por Chile.A las 14 especies citadas por Liotta 2006 para la provincia de Mendoza debemos agregar nuevas citas de especies introducidas (Tabla I y II). Cabe destacar que un alto porcentaje de las 24 especies presentes en la provincia, un total de 11, se corresponde a especies introducidas tanto de origen exótico como autóctono.
