Beschreibung: The second generation Antarctic magnetic anomaly compilation for the region south of 60°S includes some 3.5 million line-km of aeromagnetic and marine magnetic data that more than doubles the initial map’s near-surface database. For the new compilation, the magnetic data sets were corrected for the International Geomagnetic Reference Field, diurnal effects, and high-frequency errors and leveled, gridded, and stitched together. The new magnetic data further constrain the crustal architecture and geological evolution of the Antarctic Peninsula and the West Antarctic Rift System in West Antarctica, as well as Dronning Maud Land, the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains, the Prince Charles Mountains, Princess Elizabeth Land, and Wilkes Land in East Antarctica and the circumjacent oceanic margins. Overall, the magnetic anomaly compilation helps unify disparate regional geologic and geophysical studies by providing new constraints on major tectonic and magmatic processes that affected the Antarctic from Precambrian to Cenozoic times.

Beschreibung: The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has agreed to support the development of a new generation gravity map of Antarctica (ADGRAV - Antarctic Digital Gravity Synthesis), funding the development of a web based access tool. The goal of this project is the creation of an on-line Antarctic gravity database which will facilitate access to improved high resolution satellite gravity models, in conjunction with shipboard, airborne, and land based gravity measurements for the continental regions. This database will complement parallel projects underway to develop new continental bedrock (BEDMAP) and magnetic (ADMAP) maps of Antarctica.

Notizen: We found that application of ultrasound vibrations to p-type silicon promotes a dissociation of iron-boron pairs. This effect is manifested by a decrease of the minority carrier diffusion length, L, after ultrasound treatment (UST) of the silicon wafer. Post-UST recovery of the diffusion length is identical after thermal and optical pair dissociation. This provides an unambiguous proof for dissociation of Fe-B pairs stimulated by ultrasound vibrations. The UST process creates interstitial iron donors which acts as efficient recombination centers and lower the L value. A relevant physical mechanism of the ultrasound effect is discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A new spectroscopic diagnostic was developed to measure poloidal velocity profiles of Tokamak fusion test reactor (TFTR) plasmas. Carbon poloidal velocities were measured using the Doppler shift of the C VI 5291 Å impurity line of both intrinsic emission and charge exchange emission from neutral beams. Poloidal velocities are typically small (vθ≤104 m/s) requiring small wavelength shifts (Δλ≤0.2 Å) to be measured. However, the high central ion temperatures in TFTR required the use of a low dispersion spectrometer to view the entire linewidth (full width at half maximum ≤25 Å). A very high throughput spectrometer/detector system was assembled to achieve the necessary precision in vθ. Statistical errors in the chord-averaged poloidal velocity less than 100 m/s have been obtained. The short focal length spectrometer features f/1.8 input optics, a transmission grating, and refractive optics. A thinned back-illuminated charge coupled device detector provided a high quantum efficiency (QE=75%). The diagnostic had 20 ms time resolution and a radial resolution of ≤3.5 cm after an inversion. Two symmetric up/down views were used to eliminate atomic physics effects that would otherwise distort the measured rotation velocity. This diagnostic complemented the measurements of Ti, vφ, and ni from a charge exchange spectroscopy system, allowing the determination of radial electric field profiles using the force balance equation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Improvements in the charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CHERS) system have resulted in accurate measurements of Ti and Vφ profiles during DT experiments. These include moving the spectrometer detector array and electronics farther away from the tokamak to a low neutron flux location. This relocation has also improved access to all components of the system. Also, a nonplasma-viewing calibration fiber system was added to monitor the change in fiber transmission due to the high flux DT neutrons. Narrow band filtered light transmitted through the calibration fiber is now used as a reference for the Vφ measurement. At a high neutron flux of ∼2.5×1018 neutrons/s (peak fusion power∼6.2 MW) with total yield of 1.3×1018 neutrons a modest 5% decrease in fiber transmission was observed. Corrections for transmission loss are made and Ti(r,t) and Vφ(r,t) profiles are automatically calculated within four minutes of every shot. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: An important issue for future tokamaks is real-time plasma control for the avoidance of magnetohydrodynamic instabilities and other applications that require detailed plasma profile and fluctuation data. Although measurements from diagnostics providing this information require significantly more processing than magnetic flux data, recent advancements could make them practical for adjusting operational settings for plasma heating and current drive systems as well as field coil currents. On the Princeton Beta Experiment-Modification (PBX-M), the lower hybrid current drive phasing can be varied during a plasma shot using digitally programmable ferrite phase shifters, and neural beam functions can be fully computer controlled. PBX-M diagnostics that may be used for control purposes include motional Stark-effect polarimetry for magnetic field pitch angle profiles, soft x-ray arrays for plasma position control and the separation of βp from li, hard x-ray detectors for energetic electron distributions, a multichannel electron cyclotron emission radiometer for ballooning mode identification, and passive plate eddy current monitors for kink stabilization. We will describe the present status of these systems on PBX-M, and discuss their suitability for feedback applications. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A two-dimensional intensified photodiode array is used to measure charge exchange recombination emission in the TFTR. The noise of this detector has been characterized to provide a better estimation of the error bars associated with ion temperature measurements. Contributions to the measured signal include a dc level offset, an integrated dark signal, and the actual photon signal. In addition to photon noise, there is a significant readout noise. The analysis was complicated by a nonlinear response of the readout circuitry. The detector output is linearized and the pixel-to-pixel gain variation is removed with a white field correction. The noise has been modeled over a range of integration times of the detector and gains of the intensifier, allowing an estimation of the uncertainty in the measurement at each pixel, and therefore its appropriate weight in the fitting function.

Notizen: Following charge exchange between fast neutral atoms and impurities, emission from the charge exchange product can take two forms. The first is prompt radiation due to rapid cascading of the excited electron following the charge exchange event. In addition, as a result of electron impact excitation from the ground state before ionization, the impurity can subsequently radiate at the chosen wavelength. Depending on the beam-sightline geometry, plasma density, and species observed, the emission of this "ion plume'' can rival the prompt emission, making it a potentially important consideration for ion temperature and density measurements. Direct measurements of this ion plume radiation after the charge exchange event have been made for He+ ions (n=4–3, 4686 A(ring)) and C5+ ions (n=8–7, 5292 A(ring)). The ratios of plume radiation to prompt charge exchange radiation for these transitions is compared to predictions from modeling, and good agreement is found. Notizen: A model for characterizing the cold edge component of spectra measured in charge-exchange recombination spectroscopy (CHERS) applications is presented. It provides a rapid means of constraining the amplitude and width of the cold component of spectra for which the characteristics of the hot charge-exchange emission are desired. The model utilizes the CHERS measurements themselves and measurements of the electron density near the radius of peak background emissivity. A comparison of model predictions with direct measurements of the background emission during neutral beam injection is presented. Influences of changes in background emission on the inferred ion temperature during a neutral beam pulse are discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
