Description / Table of Contents: 2-Bis(carboxymethyl)-amino-5-hydroxy-terephthalic Acid as an Ambifunctional Ligand in Iron(III) ComplexesFrom steric reasons the anthranilic acid -N,N-diacetic acid group and the salicylic acid group of 2-bis(carboxymethyl)-amino-5-hydroxy-terephthalic acid (H5C) cannot coordinate to the same central atom. With iron(III) H5C forms the mononuclear complex (HC)Fe(OH)2-, the central atom is fixed to the anthranilic acid N,N-diacetic acid group. In a weak acid medium (HC)Fe(OH)2- is converted into the binuclear species (HC)Fe(C)Fe(OH)4- which is of a deep red colour. In this complex the anion C5-has the function of a bridging ligand coordinating both by the anthranilic acid-N,N-diacetic acid group and by the salicylic acid group. The complex formation in the ternary system iron(III)/nitrilo triacetic acid/5-sulfo salicylic acid may be used as model for the dimerisation of the anion (HC)Fe(OH)2-.

Description / Table of Contents: Studies on the Coordinative Behaviour of Potentially Four and Fivedentate Bis(salicylidene amino)-Ligands with Ions of the 3d-Elements.Fourdentate bis(salicylidene amino)-ligands (-ONΦCH2ΦNO- and -ONΦOΦNO-, meaning of the abbreviations see text) with the centres of donor atoms connected by rigid, bifunctional residues, form polymeric complexes MeII(ONΦCH2ΦNO) and MeII(ONΦOΦNO) with cobalt(II), nickel(II), and copper(II). Among the cobalt(II) chelates the structure is uniformly tetrahedral, but the nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes contain square planar central atoms and such with a higher coordination number side by side. The potential fivedentate ligands ∼ON3PPh3NO-, -ON2O2NO-, and -ON2S2NO- differ as to their coordinative behaviour. The coordination number of the complexes Ni(ON3PPh3NO) and Co(ON3PPh3NO) is five. On the other hand the compounds Co(ON2S2NO) and Co(ON2O2NO) are tetrahedral. No coordination of the ether or sulfide group is observed. Ni(ON2O2NO) has an octahedral structure which is produced by coordination polymerisation and possibly by coordination of the ether group. The new complexes are compared with the transition metal complexes of simple salicylaldimines.
Notes: Vierzählige Bis(salicylidenamino)-Liganden (-ONΦCH2ΦNO- bzw. -ONΦOΦNO-, Bedeutung der Abkürzungen vgl. Text), deren Haftatomzentren über starre, bifunktionelle Reste verbunden sind, bilden mit Kobalt(II), Nickel(II) und Kupfer(II) koordinationspolymere Komplexe MeII(ONΦCH2ΦNO) bzw. MeII(ONΦOΦNO).

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of the Composition of Mixed Solvents on the Stability and Formation Constants of Copper (II) and Nickel(II) Complexes of Substituted 1,2-DioximesThe stability constants cK1, cK2, and cβ2 of the complexes which are formed in the systems M2+/DH2, M2+/Ac—DH2, and M2+/Et, Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH2 (M2+ = Cu2+, Ni2+; DH2, Ac—DH2, Et2Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH2 = 1,2-dioximes) are determined in water and in water-dioxane mixtures (25, 50 and 75 per cent). Because of the stabilisation of the l,2-complexes by intramolecular hydrogen bonds cK2, is always higher than cK1.On account of the decrease of the dielectricity constant the constants cK1, cK2, and cβ2, rise with increasing contents of dioxane in the mixtures. The influence of the dielectricity constant may be eliminated by considering the formation constants cK1(B), cK2(B), and cβ2(B). The individual formation constants cK1(B) of the 1,l-complexes investigated are independent of the composition of the solvent, but among the overall formation constants cβ2(B) this comes true only for the complexes Ni(Ac—DH)2, Ni(Et2Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH)2, and Cu(Et2Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH)2. With Cu(DH2) and Cu(Ac—DH)2 a linear relation between log cβ2(B) and the molar fraction of water is stated. This effect is attributed to a specific solvatation of the chelates Cu(DH)2 and Cu(Ac—DH)2 by water.

Description / Table of Contents: New Copper(I, II) CompoundsComplexes of the type [CuII(N∩N)2][CuICl1+x]2x (N∩N = en, pn, 2-amino picoline) are prepared from Cu(N∩N)2Cl2 and copper(I) chloride. [CuII(enac)][CuICl2]2  -  a complex with a macrocyclic cation  -  is obtained, by the reaction of Cuen2Cl2 in aqueous acetone.Diacetyl monoxime partially reduces copper(II) of Cu(NSMe)2Cl2 and in this way causes the formation of [Cu(NSMe)2][CuCl3] (NSMe = β-aminoethyl methylsulfide). On the other hand a template reaction of this oxime with Cu(NSMe)2 (ClO4)2 produces CuII(ONNSMe)(ClO4) (HONNSMe=CH3C(NOH)C(NCH2CH2SCH3)CH3), which shows a reduced paramagnetism.Basing on magnetic behaviour, i. r. and vis spectra the structure of the new compounds is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Oxydative Addition of Benzyl Halides to Bis(triphenylphosphine) Ethylene Nickel(0)By the oxydative addition of benzyl chloride to (Ph3P)2Ni(C2H4) at -20°C (Ph3P)2Ni(CH2Ph)Cl (II) is formed. Under similar conditions benzyl bromide gives (Ph3P)2Ni(CH2Ph)Br, but in an impure state. It is shown, that the oxydative addition to (Ph3P)2Ni(C2H4) may involve both SN2 displacement and one electron mechanismens. In benzene solution an equilibrium between (Ph3P)2Ni(σ-CH2Ph)Cl and the blue violet (Ph3P)Ni(π-CH2Ph)Cl exists. The benzyl ligands of II are split off by the reaction with ethereal hydrochloric acid, forming toluene and dibenzyl, with mercury(II) chloride, forming PhCH2HgCl, or with triphenylphosphine, forming dibenzyl and (Ph3P)3NiCl.

Description / Table of Contents: Triphenyl Phosphine Complexes of Nickel(O) Containing Nitrogen Heterocycles as Second LigandsThe mixed ligand complex (dipy)Ni(Ph3)2 is formed by the reaction of nickel(II) 1,3-diketonates, diethyl aluminium ethoxide, triphenyl phosphine, and α,α′-Dipyridyl or of (Ph3P)2Ni(C2H4) and α,α′-Dipyridyl. The second reaction is generally practicable and may be used to synthesize complexes of the types (Ph3P)2Ni(N∩N) (N∩N bidentate nitrogen ligand) and (Ph3P)2Ni(N∩P) (N∩P tertiary phosphane substituted by a pyridyl residue). In the case of the interaction with bulky N∩N-ligands both ethylene and triphenyl phosphine are substituted, and complexes of the type Ni(N∩N)2 are formed.Reaction mechanisms, 1H-nmr spectra and physical properties of the new complexes are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Nickel(0) Complexes with the Donor Set N2P2Mixed ligand complexes of the type (dipy)Ni(PR3)2 are stabil, provided the n-donor α,α′ -dipyridyl is combined with a tertiary phosphine or a phosphite acting as a π-acceptor. They may be prepared from (R3P)2Ni(C2H4) and dipy, from (dipy) Ni(COD) and PR3, or from (dipy) Ni(C2H5)2 and PR3. Starting with [(C6H11)3P]2Ni(C2H4) or (dipy)Ni(COD) the synthesis of the complex (dipy)Ni[P(C6H11)3]2 containing only n-donor ligands, failed. By the reaction of (dipy)Ni(C2H5)2 with (C6H11)3P the olefin complex [(C6H11)3P]2Ni(C2H4) was formed.

Description / Table of Contents: The Influence of Ring Size on the Structure of Metal Chelates with Tridentate Ligands. IV. Palladium(II) and Platinum(II) Complexes of Pyridyl Substituted Dialkyl Sulfides and Amines[β-(Pyridyl-2)-ethyl]-[(pyridyl-2)-methyl]-amine(2,3-py2tri) forms planar palladium(II) complexes [Pd(2,3-py2tri)X]X (X = Cl, Br) occupying trans-positions as a tridentate ligand. An analogous behaviour is observed with bis[β-(pyridyl-2)-ethyl]-sulfide(3,3-py2Stri) in the chelate compounds [MeII(3,3-py2Stri)X]X (MeII = Pd, Pt; X = Cl, Br, J, SCN). On the other hand the rigid ligand bis[(pyridyl-2)-methyl]-sulfide(2,2-py2Stri) is only bidentate in the complexes MeII(2,2-py2Stri)X2 (MeII = Pd, Pt; X = Cl, Br, J, SCN), one pyridine group does not interact with the central atom. The reasons are the angular relations within the thioether group of 2,2-py2Stri which allow a tridentate coordination in a facial conformation (octahedral and trigonal-bipyramidal nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes), but not in a meridional one (planar palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes). In Pt(2,2-py2Stri)(SCN)(NCS) one thiocyanato ligand is linked by sulfur, the other one by nitrogen.

Description / Table of Contents: Substitution Reactions with Mixed Ligand Complexes of Nickel(0). I. Reactions with HeteroolefinesThe mixed ligand complexes (C2H4)Ni(PPh3)2 (A) and (COD) Ni(dipy) (B) react with “heteromonoolefines” L (carbonyl compounds, azomethines, azobenzene) by substitution forming LnNi(PPh3)2 or LnNi(dipy). In these complexes the heteromonoolefines are coordinated side-on as π-acid ligands. α-β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, which are bonded by the C=C and not by the C=O function, take a special position. The olefines of A and B may also be substituted by diheterodiolefines L′(1,2-diketones and the corresponding diimines). However in the case of the reaction with the diimines not only compounds like L′Ni(PPh3)2 or L′Ni(dipy) but also bischelates like NiL′2 are easily formed by a further substitution. For the course of the substitution reactions the energy of the π*-orbital of the heteroolefine, which may be expressed by the polarographic half wave potential, is of a high importance. Heteroolefines with E1/2 〈 -2000 mV (acetone, ethyl benzoate) either do not react with the mixed ligand complexes A and B or the substitution requires special conditions (propanal). Relations and differences of B and (dipy)NiEt2 as to their reactivities with heteroolefines are discussed.
Notes: Die Gemischtligand-Komplexe (C2H4)Ni(PPh3)2 (A) bzw. (COD) Ni(dipy) (B) reagieren mit “Heteromonoolefinen” L (Carbonylverbindungen, Azomethine, Azobenzol) unter Substitution zu LnNi(PPh3)2 bzw. LnNi(dipy).

Description / Table of Contents: The Influence of Ring Size on the Structure of Metal Chelates with Tridentate Ligands. I. Copper(II) and Zinc(II) Chelates of Bis[β-(pyridyl-2)ethyl]amine and [β-(Pyridyl-2)-ethyl] [(pyridyl-2)methyl]amineThe tridentate ligands 2.3-py2tri and 3.3-py2tri form 1,1-complexes with copper(II) salts, having the coordination numbers 5 or 6. The less bulky ligand 2,3-py2tri is also tridentate in the 1,1-complexes of zinc. But 3,3-py2tri in combination with polarisable anions like chloride, bromide, or iodide induces a tetrahedral structure in complexes of this type. One of the pyridine donor atoms remains non-coordinated.Using 2,3-py2tri in excess, 1,2-complexes may be prepared both of copper(II) and of zinc (II) With 3,3-py2tri under the same conditions oligomeric hydroxy complexes [Cu(3,3-py2tri)(OH)Y]n and Zn2(3,3-py2tri)2(OH)(ClO4)3, or binuclear compounds like Cu2(3,3-py2tri)(ClO4)4 are formed. In the latter case a part of 3,3-py2tri has the function of a bridging ligand. In spite of the lower basicity and of the stiffening by heteroatomatic rings there are close relations between 2,3-py2tri or 3,3-py2tri and the aliphatic amine ligands 2,3-tri and 3,3-tri.
