    Notes: Abstract Leaf-cutting ants of the generaAcromyrmex andAtta are considered the principal polyphagous pests of the Neotropics Although some members of these genera are of economic importance, have a broad geographic distribution, and are extremely good colonizers, others are endemic and closely interact with native ecosystems. Control is generally practiced against any colony, irrespective of its taxonomic status. Indiscriminate control coupled with habitat destruction threatens endemic species with extinction, and, through habitat simplification, favors other pest species. As nests ofAtta are large, having several square meters of nest surface, the endemic taxa can be easily used as environmental indicators for natural ecosystems Likewise, the pest species can be used to detect environmental disturbance As these ants are keystone species and easily identified by nonspecialists, efforts should be made to integrate these into viable conservation programs

    Notes: ABSTRACT The microprojectile bombardment method was used to transfer DNA into embryogenic callus of asparagus (Asparagus officcinalis L.) and to produce stably transformed asparagus plants. Embryogenic callus, derived from UC157 and UC72 asparagus cultivars, was bombarded with tungsten particles coated with plasmid DNA that contained genes encoding hygromycin phosphotransferase, phosphinothricin acetyl transferase and β-glucuronidase. Putatively transformed calli were identified from the bombarded tissue after 4 months selection on 25 mg/L hygromycin B plus 4 mg/L phosphinothricin (PPT). By selecting embryogenic callus on hygromycin plus PPT the overall transformation and selection efficiencies were substantially improved over selection with hygromycin or PPT alone, where no transgenic clones were recovered. The transgenic nature of the selected material was demonstrated by GUS histochemical assays and Southern blot hybridization analysis. Transgenic asparagus plants were found to withstand the prescribed levels of the PPT-based herbicide BASTATM for weed control.

    Notes: Abstract The energetics of the oxidative additive of I2 to [Ir(Μ-L)(CO)2]2 [L =t-buthylthiolate (S t Bu), 3,5-dimethylpyrazolate (3,5-Me2pz), and 7-azaindolate (7-aza)] complexes was investigated by using the results of reaction-solution calorimetric measurements, X-ray structure determinations, and extended Hückel (EH) molecular orbital calculations. The addition of 1 mol of iodine to 1 mol of [Ir(Μ-L)(CO)2]2, in toluene, leads to [Ir(Μ-L)(I)(CO)2]2, with the formation of two Ir-I bonds and one Ir-Ir bond. The following enthalpies of reaction were obtained for this process: −125.8±4.9 kJ mol−1 (L = S t Bu), −152.0±3.8 kJ mol−1 (L=3,5-Me2pz), and −205.9±9.9 kJ mol¹ (L=7-aza). These results are consistent with a possible decrease of the strain associated with the formation of three-, four-, and five-membered rings, respectively, in the corresponding products, as suggested by the results of EH calculations. The calculations also indicate a slightly stronger Ir-Ir bond for L = 3,5-Me2pz than for L= S t Bu despite the fact that the Ir-Ir bond lengths are identical for both complexes. The reaction of 1 mol of [Ir(Μ-S t Bu)(CO)2]2 with 2 mol of iodine to yield [Ir(Μ-S t Bu)(I)2(CO)2]2 was also studied. In this process four Ir-I bonds are formed, and from the corresponding enthalpy of reaction (−186.4±2.7 kJ mol−1) a solution phase Ir-I mean bond dissociation enthalpy in [Ir(Μ-S t Bu)(I)2(CO)2]2, $$\overline {DH} _{\sin } (Ir - I) = 122.2 \pm 0.7 kJ mol^{ - 1} $$ , was derived. This value is lower than most $$\overline {DH} _{\sin } (Ir - I)$$ values reported for octahedral mononuclear Ir111 complexes. New large-scale syntheses of the [Ir(Μ-L)(CO)2]2 complexes, with yields up to 90%, using [Ir(acac)(CO)2] as starting material, are also reported. The X-ray structures of [Ir(Μ-L)(I)(CO)2]2 (L=StBu and 3,5-Me2pz) complexes have been determined. For L=StBu the crystals are monoclinic, space group P2l/c,a=10.741(2) å,b= 11.282(3) å,c=18.308(3) å,Β=96.71(1)

    Notes: Abstract A retrospective study of 20 patients with cryptococcal meningitis and their isolated strains was performed. Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans was recovered from 14 (70%) cases, and var. gattii was recovered from six (30%) patients. Twelve patients had AIDS (all carrying var. neoformans), two had other diseases (one with var. neoformans and one var. gattii) and there was no identifiable underlying disease in six (one var. neoformans and five var. gattii). Fourteen patients (11 var. neoformans and three var. gattii) resided in the Mexico City area, where a temperate climate is prevalent, and there were six cases (three var. neoformans and three var. gattii) from states with a tropical/subtropical climate. Although there was no significant statistical difference between the two varieties, the fatal outcome was higher in patients with var. neoformans. The disease caused by var. gattii strains was characterized by a higher opening pressure, more inflamatory changes of CSF and a longer clinical course (delayed clinical and mycological cure). Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii is a significant cause of cryptococcal meningitis in patients without underlying diseases in Mexico.

    Notes: Abstract Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations ofγ-Al2O3, using a pairwise additive interaction potential of Pauling's type with four different radii for aluminum atoms, were analysed in order to determine the influence of the radius on the modification of coordination numbers of A1 relative to the ideal structure, at two different temperatures of 300 and 1500 K. It is found that the best choice is the radius of penta-coordinated aluminum, reproducing structural and vibrational properties of the compound in excellent agreement with experimentally observed properties.

    Notes: Abstract Activity coefficients for NaCl in aqueous mixtures with Na-Formate were determined at 25°C from emf measurements for different total ionic strengths. At each total ionic strength studied, the measurements were carried out at different ratios of the Na-Formate to NaCl ionic strengths. The experimental activity coefficients were fitted using the Harned equation and the treatments of Scatchard et al. and Pitzer et al. Finally, the excess Gibbs energy of these mixtures was also calculated.

    Notes: Abstract Activity coefficient values for NaCl in ethanol-water mixtures containing 20, 40, 60, 70, 80 and 90 weight % ethanol are calculated from the emf for the galvanic cell $$Na - glass|NaCl(m), H_2 O (100 - Y), EtOH(Y), AgCl|Ag$$ in which the weight % of the corresponding solvent is indicated in parenthesis. The results obtained are analyzed by using different theoretical models. Chemical models which take into account the presence of ion pairs in solutions of high ethanol content are also used. There is good agreement between the results obtained from all the models.
