    Notes: An investigation of the metallurgy of a pseudobinary section of the ternary-phase diagram has been performed by means of differential thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction, and metallography. Microstructural observations and lattice parameter variations have been interpreted in terms of the existence of a solid solubility range for the Laves phase. Thermal analysis has established the details of the phase relationships in the region of the Laves phase and on the basis of the results a modified phase diagram is proposed.

    Notes: The microstructure of the magnetostrictive alloy terfenol, Tb0.27Dy0.73Fex, has been studied in the range 1.55≤x≤2.30. Image analysis has confirmed and quantified observations of the reabsorption of the rare-earth phase into the matrix after annealing, implying the existence of a solid solubility range. Similar measurements have demonstrated the growth of the primary RFe3 phase for all alloys with x〉2.00. Eutectic and peritectic temperatures of 892 and 1239 °C, respectively, have been determined by differential thermal analysis (DTA) for this composition range. The homogeneous, elongated grain structure induced by vertical float zoning increases k33 and allows the development of a uniform static strain throughout the rod.

    Description: The electronic structure of [6,6]-phenyl C 61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), and P3HT/PCBM blends is studied using soft X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. We find that annealing reduces the HOMO-LUMO gap of P3HT and P3HT/PCBM blends, whereas annealing has little effect on the HOMO-LUMO gap of PCBM. We propose a model connecting torsional disorder in a P3HT polymer to the HOMO-LUMO gap, which suggests that annealing helps to decrease the torsional disorder in the P3HT polymers. Our model is used to predict the characteristic length scales of the flat P3TH polymer segments in P3HT and P3HT/PCBM blends before and after annealing. Our approach may prove useful in characterizing organic photovoltaic devices in situ or even in operando .

    Description: Degradation of material properties by high-pressure hydrogen is an important factor in determining the safety and reliability of materials used in high-pressure hydrogen storage and delivery. Hydrogen damage mechanisms have a time dependence that is linked to hydrogen outgassing after exposure to the hydrogen atmosphere that makes ex situ measurements of mechanical properties problematic. Designing in situ measurement instruments for high-pressure hydrogen is challenging due to known hydrogen incompatibility with many metals and standard high-power motor materials such as Nd. Here we detail the design and operation of a solenoid based in situ tensile tester under high-pressure hydrogen environments up to 42 MPa (6000 psi). Modulus data from high-density polyethylene samples tested under high-pressure hydrogen at 35 MPa (5000 psi) are also reported as compared to baseline measurements taken in air.
