    Notes: We point out that the creation of a soliton pulse train in a nonlinear-dispersive system can be used for the generation of high-power microwave bursts. A modulated transmission line with an appropriate nonlinear dielectric is proposed. The nonlinear wave evolution is analyzed and requirements for the dielectric material are found. Problems associated with the material are discussed. Low-power experimental demonstrations of these concepts are presented.

    Notes: Data are presented and a model describing the diffusion of the donor Si in GaAs from grown-in dopant sources. In addition, the effects of background impurities on Si diffusion and layer interdiffusion in AlxGa1−xAs-GaAs superlattices are described. These results are obtained on epitaxial GaAs samples with alternating doped and undoped layers and on AlxGa1−xAs-GaAs superlattices with doped (Si or Mg) layers. The layer-doped GaAs and the AlxGa1−xAs-GaAs superlattices have been grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition and are characterized using secondary ion mass spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Different annealing conditions are used to study the interaction between the grown-in impurities and the native defects of the crystal controlling the diffusion processes. The model describing the impurity diffusion and layer (Al-Ga) interdiffusion is based on the behavior of column III vacancies, VIII, and column III interstitials, IIII, and the control of their concentration by the position of the crystal Fermi level and the crystal stoichiometry. Experimental data show that n-type AlxGa1−xAs-GaAs superlattices undergo enhanced layer interdiffusion because of increased solubility of the VIII defect, while enhanced layer interdiffusion in p-type superlattices is caused by an enhanced solubility of IIII. The model employed is consistent with the experimental data and with the data of previous work.

    Notes: An electron channeling study has been done on large grained YBa2Cu3Ox samples. Selected area channeling patterns (SACP) were used to examine several dozen grains on electropolished surfaces and it was demonstrated that (a) the twin planes observed in polarized optical light microscopy lie parallel to {110} crystal planes, and (b) the long flat sides of high aspect ratio grains are formed by basal planes, and the shorter sides are formed by either (010), (100), or {110} planes. A majority of the large grains examined were found to contain subgrains, misaligned by 0.5°–1° and ranging in size from less than 3 to 20 μm. The origin of the subgrains is not understood.

    Notes: Measurement of distribution of velocities of phases in pipe flow of a dense gas-solid suspension was facilitated by the use of an ion source in the form of a localized corona discharge and a downstream traversing electrostatic probe. The system utilizes the transient behavior of a corona discharge which provides a distinction of times of arrival of ions and solid particles of modified charges at a downstream probe. This probe system does not suffer the handicap of other available probe systems in a dense solid phase.

    Notes: The design and operation of a gas aggregation source is described. The source combines the attributes of high-temperature operation (enabling preparation of transition metal clusters), mass selection, ultrahigh vacuum compatibility, and transportability. This makes it ideally suited to in situ studies such as scanning tunneling microscope or synchrotron radiation experiments. Data are presented to illustrate the performance of the source; recent results obtained in synchrotron radiation studies are highlighted. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Much attention has been focused on the saturation of stimulated Raman scattering by the decay of its daughter waves. This research has almost exclusively dealt with the decay of the daughter Langmuir wave into secondary Langmuir waves and ion acoustic waves. In this Letter, the decay of the Raman driven electromagnetic wave into two Langmuir waves, two-plasmon decay, is discussed for the first time. It is shown that based on the stimulated Raman scattering reflectivity levels measured in experiments, this instability should be present in current laser–plasma experiments. In addition, experimental signatures of this process are discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An analysis of experimentally measured particle transport in tokamak plasmas with negative central magnetic shear is presented. The analysis is presented in terms of a simple model for turbulent transport which allows the separation of diagonal and off diagonal terms and allows the direct comparison of particle and energy transport. Comparing the measured fluxes to the fluxes predicted by a simple quasi analytical model which specifies a relation between the diagonal and off diagonal terms allows an understanding of the reason for the difference between energy and particle fluxes. In the center of discharges with a region of enhanced confinement (or internal transport barrier), the ion thermal diffusivity becomes small and comparable to neoclassical values and the particle diffusivity also becomes small and approaches the neoclassical values. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Particle confinement was compared for the high confinement mode plasmas with the edge localized mode in the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute Tokamak-60 Upgrade (JT-60U) [S. Ishida, JT-60 Team, Nucl. Fusion 39, 1211 (1999)] and the DIII-D tokamak [J. L. Luxon et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1986 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 159] considering separate confinement times for particles supplied by neutral beam injection (NBI) (center fueling) and by recycling and gas-puffing (edge fueling). Similar dependence on the NBI power was obtained in JT-60U and DIII-D. The particle confinement time for center fueling in DIII-D was smaller by a factor of 4 in the low density discharges and by a factor of 1.8 in the high density discharges than JT-60U scaling, respectively, suggesting the stronger dependence on the density in DIII-D. The particle confinement time for edge fueling in DIII-D was comparable with JT-60U scaling in the low density discharges. However, it decreased to a much smaller value in the high density discharges. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Significant progress has been made in obtaining high-performance discharges for many energy confinement times in the DIII-D tokamak [J. L. Luxon et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion Research (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. I, p. 159]. Normalized performance (measured by the product of βNH89 and indicative of the proximity to both conventional β limits and energy confinement quality, respectively) ∼10 has been sustained for 〉5 τE with qmin〉1.5. These edge localized modes (ELMing) H-mode discharges have β∼5%, which is limited by the onset of resistive wall modes slightly above the ideal no-wall n=1 limit, with approximately 75% of the current driven noninductively. The remaining Ohmic current is localized near the half-radius. The DIII-D electron cyclotron heating system is being upgraded to replace this inductively driven current with localized electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD). Density control, which is required for effective ECCD, has been successfully demonstrated in long-pulse high-performance ELMing H-mode discharges with βNH89∼7 for up to 6.3 s. In plasma shapes compatible with good density control in the present divertor configuration, the achieved βN is somewhat less than that in the high βNH89=10 discharges. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A one-dimensional unstable resonator combining free-space and waveguide propagation is used to efficiently extract power from a large-area gain medium in a slab waveguide CO2 laser. A power of 240 W in a near-diffraction-limited beam has been attained at 12% conversion efficiency from a 38 cm gain length in a compact sealed-off laser head, corresponding to a specific power extraction of 14 kW m−2 of discharge area.
