Description / Table of Contents:
It is shown that the increase in hydrogen ion activity caused by the addition of neutral salts to solutions of polyphosphoric acids is based on the exchange of non-dissociated hydrogen ions of the polyphosphoric acids by cations of the salts added. Equilibria establishing between metal cations and protons follow the Rothmund equation which is also valid for solid ion exchangers. Equilibria constants for K+, NH+4, Na+, Li+, and Ba++ have been determined and show that the bonding strength of these ions increases in the indicated order.
Notes:
