Notes: [Auszug] The properties of a unique set of quantum states of the electromagnetic field are reviewed. These ‘squeezed states’ have less uncertainty in one quadrature than a coherent state. Proposed schemes for the generation and detection of squeezed states as well as potential applications are ...

Notes: [Auszug] Realizing that one of the most powerful approaches to classical mechanics is through the concept of phase-space, Wigner3 introduced a quantum distribution function of positional and momentum coordinates, which provides a framework for an exact reformulation of non-relativistic quantum mechanics in ...

Notes: [Auszug] A unique property predicted by the quantum theory of light is the phenomenon of photon antibunching. Recent theoretical predictions and experimental observations of photon antibunching in resonance fluorescence from a two-level atom are ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN a previous communication1, the formation of a high degree of acidity (pH 1.7–1.8) during fermentation by ordinary bakers’ yeast was described. Acid formed to this extent in the suspending fluid (0.6 part to 1.0 of yeast) when unbuffered and containing potassium chloride of ...

Notes: Abstract Steady state solutions of master equations with one variable are constructed. The method of solution is based on a transformation of the original equation for the probability into one for a slowly varying function. The method is of general applicability and is particularly useful in obtaining solutions in the case where detailed balance does not hold. Examples of such systems in chemical reaction models and the two photon laser are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Agarwal's definition of detailed balance for open quantum Markoffian systems is shown to arise from microreversibility in an analogous fashion to the familiar classical concept. It is therefore presented as the appropriate formal generalisation of the classical result to the quantum-mechanical regime. This fully quantum-mechanical approach is discussed in relation to the Fokker-Planck equations of the phase-space calculus and the Pauli master equation; two contexts in which a pseudo-classical form of detailed balance is well known. Our discussion is illustrated through the examples of the damped harmonic oscillator and the single mode laser.

Notes: Abstract Two-level atoms bouncing in a stable gravitational cavity are considered, where the atomic mirror at the bottom of the bounces is an evanescent wave caused by an internally reflected intense Gaussian-mode laser beam. We consider the broadening mechanisms of the atoms from their initially tightly spaced position distribution, using a phenomenological semi-classical model, which includes spontaneous emission. A fully quantum model, which neglects spontaneous emission, is derived, and the broadening of the atomic wave function in the quantum model is compared with the broadening of the atomic distribution in an analogous classical simulation where spontaneous emission is similarly neglected. We find that the broadening is correctly described by the classical simulations in the horizontal directions, while it significantly underestimates the broadening in the vertical direction.

Notes: Abstract.  Optical QND measurements may be made using devices which act as nonlinear beam splitters, transmitting noise in a phase-sensitive way. One class of such devices are resonant optical cavities containing a nonlinear medium. By appropriate choice of nonlinearity and operating parameters, various QND observables may be measured. We consider, in particular, the extent to which the QND performance of these devices is degraded by intracavity losses.

Notes: Abstract An analysis of the coupled Stokes and Antistokes radiation in Raman scattering, including laser depletion, is found to predict a finite gain at perfect momentum matching. This is in contradiction to the results of Bloembergen and Shen who treated the laser as a constant and hence predicted zero gain at perfect momentum matching.
