Abstract The combined particle-pipe-model serves to correlate the pressure drop in one-phase flown packed columns. It uses the number of resistance of a sphere collective and the number of pressure drop of a pipe. The equation of the number of resistance of a sphere collective is connected with the sinking velocity of a sphere collective, which is correlated now with a new equation. By this way the influence of the geometric properties of packed columns is calculable. Here are introduced into the model of a packed column the parallel flown wallsection and the coresection. By this way the velocity ratios in the wallsection and the coresection can be correlated. This is of great importance for the judgement of the bypass effect in the packed column. With the tortuosity factor as a parameter the number of pressure drop of any packed columns can be correlated with an accuracy of nearly 10%. The theoretically founded model with only one empirical coefficient makes possible the calculation of the critical Reynolds number, which is of importance for mass transfer too. Further it makes possible a physically sure extrapolation of the pressure drop.
