    Description: We present new geochemical and sedimentological data from marginal marine strata of Penarth Bay, south Wales (UK) to elucidate the origin of widespread but enigmatic concentrations of vertebrate hard parts (bonebeds) in marine successions of Rhaetian age (Late Triassic). Sedimentological evidence shows that the phosphatic constituents of the bonebeds were subjected to intense phosphatization in shallow current-dominated settings and subsequently reworked and transported basinward by storms. Interbedded organic-rich strata deposited under quiescent and poorly oxygenated conditions record enhanced phosphorus regeneration from sedimentary organic matter into the water column and probably provided the main source of phosphate required for heavy bonebed clast phosphatization. The stratigraphically limited interval showing evidence for oxygen depletion and accelerated P-cycling coincides with a negative 4 organic carbon isotope excursion, which possibly reflects supra-regional changes in carbon cycling and clearly predates the ‘initial isotope excursion’ characterizing many Triassic–Jurassic boundary strata. Our data indicate that Rhaetian bonebeds are the lithological signature of profound, climatically driven changes in carbon cycling and redox conditions and support the idea of a multi-pulsed environmental crisis at the end of the Triassic, possibly linked to successive episodes of igneous activity in the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province.     Description: Precious metal epithermal, sedimentary-rock-hosted prospects constitute a new class of ore deposits recently described in the Tertiary Eastern Rhodopes of southeastern Bulgaria. The Stremtsi prospect investigated in this contribution is located in a distal location with respect to the main cluster of sedimentary-rock-hosted Ada Tepe and Rosino gold prospects of the Eastern Rhodopes. The Stremtsi prospect is hosted by a Priabonian clastic sedimentary rock sequence, overlying metamorphic rocks of the Central Rhodopean dome. The eastern part of the Stremtsi prospect contains high gold grades, and is characterized by a strongly silicified zone, including adularia and silicified dolomite blades, diagnostic for boiling conditions during ore formation in such low-sulphidation epithermal systems. The western part of the Stremtsi prospect consists of a barite, sphalerite and galena mineralization, associated with silicification, and illite and carbonate alteration. Both parts are underlain by subvertical quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins. Primary and secondary fluid inclusions, respectively, in dolomite and barite yield homogenization temperatures ranging between 90 and 247 °C. The salinity of primary inclusions in dolomite falls between 1.9 and 5.1 wt% NaCl equivalent, whereas the one of secondary fluid inclusions in barite ranges between 0.0 and 3.1 wt% NaCl equivalent. The variable homogenization temperatures reflect post-entrapment re-equilibration of the fluid inclusions, whereas the salinities were preserved and the inclusions in dolomite are interpreted in terms of dilution of a saline fluid in the western part of the Stremtsi prospect. The sulphur isotope compositions of sulphides from Stremtsi range mainly between –4 and +4. They are not diagnostic and can be attributed to magmatic, metamorphic, and sedimentary sources. They overlap with the main compositional range of sulphides from other sedimentary-rock-hosted epithermal systems and reveal the existence of hydrothermal fluids with common characteristics during ore formation throughout the Eastern Rhodopes. In addition, at Stremtsi, negative 34 S values between –42.6 and –8.8 combined with framboidal pyrite and elevated 34 S values of +7.0 to +19.5 support locally derived sulphur generated, respectively, by bacterial and thermochemical sulphate reduction. Modelling of O, C, and Sr isotope data of dolomite support the above described ore-forming processes. A positive correlation between 18 O (+12.7 to +19.7 V-SMOW) and 13 C (–2.8 to +1.5 V-PDB) values for dolomite from the eastern, silicified and gold-enriched zone of the Stremtsi prospect is satisfactorily modelled by boiling between 140 and 180 °C of a deeply circulating fluid characterized by 18 O and 13 C values of +5.5 V-SMOW and –1.5 V-PDB, respectively, and radiogenic strontium leached from the metamorphic basement rocks or its clastic counterparts in the Priabonian host rocks. By contrast, negative correlations of 18 O values (+13.4 to +23.3 V-SMOW) with 13 C values (–0.6 to –3.9 V-PDB) and 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios of dolomite from the western, barite and base metal-rich zone are adequately modelled by a shallow, low temperature (70 °C), intra-formational fluid recharged by meteoric water, which interacted with organic matter, that is, coal layers, and carbonate rocks from the Priabonian host sequence, mixing with a deep, moderate temperature (190 °C), 87 Sr-enriched fluid characterized by 18 O and 13 C values of +5.5 V-SMOW and –1.5 V-PDB, respectively. Disequilibrium conditions revealed by sulphur isotope thermometry of two galena-barite pairs yielding discrepant temperatures of 190 and 306 °C are consistent with fluid mixing. A plateau age of 37.57±0.31 Ma obtained by 40 Ar/ 39 Ar dating of adularia from Stremtsi is interpreted as a maximum age because of the saddle-shaped age spectrum. Combined with 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age data from previous studies, it reveals that the sedimentary-rock-hosted epithermal prospects constitute an independent, regional and older ore-forming hydrothermal system, distinct from the younger volcanic-rock-hosted epithermal deposits of the Bulgarian and Greek Eastern Rhodopes.

    Description: The deposition of Late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments in the high-altitude lake Meidsee (located at an altitude of 2661 m a.s.l. in the Southwestern Alps) strikingly coincided with global ice-sheet and mountain-glacier decay in the Alpine forelands and the formation of perialpine lakes. Radiocarbon ages of bottom-core sediments point out (pre-) Holocene ice retreat below 2700 m a.s.l., at about 16, 13, 10, and 9 cal. kyr BP. The Meidsee sedimentary record therefore provides information about the high-altitude Alpine landscape evolution since the Late Pleistocene/Holocene deglaciation in the Swiss Southwestern Alps. Prior to 5 cal. kyr BP, the C/N ratio and the isotopic composition of sedimentary organic matter ( 15 N org , 13 C org ) indicate the deposition of algal-derived organic matter with limited input of terrestrial organic matter. The early Holocene and the Holocene climatic optimum (between 7.0 and 5.5 cal. kyr BP) were characterized by low erosion (decreasing magnetic susceptibility, ) and high content of organic matter (C org 〉 13 wt.%), enriched in 13 C org (〉 –18) with a low C/N (~10) ratio, typical of modern algal matter derived from in situ production. During the late Holocene, there was a long-term increasing contribution of terrestrial organic matter into the lake (C/N 〉 11), with maxima between 2.4 and 0.9 cal. kyr BP. A major environmental change took place 800 years ago, with an abrupt decrease in the relative contribution of terrestrial organic material into the lake compared with aquatic organic material which subsequently largely dominated (C/N drop from 16 to 10). Nonetheless, this event was marked by a rise in soil erosion (), in nutrients input (N and P contents) and in anthropogenic lead deposition, suggesting a human disturbance of Alpine ecosystems 800 years ago. Indeed, this time period coincided with the migration of the Walser Alemannic people in the region, who settled at relatively high altitude in the Southwestern Alps for farming and maintaining Alpine passes.

    Description: The Trepca Pb-Zn-Ag skarn deposit (29 Mt of ore at 3.45% Pb, 2.30% Zn, and 80 g/t Ag) is located in the Kopaonik block of the western Vardar zone, Kosovo. The mineralization, hosted by recrystallized limestone of Upper Triassic age, was structurally and lithologically controlled. Ore deposition is spatially and temporally related with the postcollisional magmatism of Oligocene age (23–26 Ma). The deposit was formed during two distinct mineralization stages: an early prograde closed-system and a later retrograde open-system stage. The prograde mineralization consisting mainly of pyroxenes (Hd 54-100 Jo 0-45 Di 0-45 ) resulted from the interaction of magmatic fluids associated with Oligocene (23–26 Ma) postcollisional magmatism. Whereas there is no direct contact between magmatic rocks and the mineralization, the deposit is classified as a distal Pb-Zn-Ag skarn. Abundant pyroxene reflects low oxygen fugacity (〈10 –31 bar) and anhydrous environment. Fluid inclusion data and mineral assemblage limit the prograde stage within a temperature range between 390° and 475°C. Formation pressure is estimated below 900 bars. Isotopic composition of aqueous fluid inclusions hosted by hedenbergite (D = –108 to –130; 18 O = 7.5–8.0), Mn-enriched mineralogy and high REE content of the host carbonates at the contact with the skarn mineralization suggest that a magmatic fluid was modified during its infiltration through the country rocks. The retrograde mineral assemblage comprises ilvaite, magnetite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, pyrite, quartz, and various carbonates. Increases in oxygen and sulfur fugacities, as well as a hydrous character of mineralization, require an open-system model. The opening of the system is related to phreatomagmatic explosion and formation of the breccia. Arsenopyrite geothermometer limits the retrograde stage within the temperature range between 350° and 380°C and sulfur fugacity between 10 –8.8 and 10 –7.2 bars. The principal ore minerals, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and minor chalcopyrite, were deposited from a moderately saline Ca-Na chloride fluid at around 350°C. According to the isotopic composition of fluid inclusions hosted by sphalerite (D = –55 to –74; 18 O = –9.6 to –13.6), the fluid responsible for ore deposition was dominantly meteoric in origin. The 34 S values of the sulfides spanning between –5.5 and +10 point to a magmatic origin of sulfur. Ore deposition appears to have been largely contemporaneous with the retrograde stage of the skarn development. Postore stage accompanied the precipitation of significant amount of carbonates including the travertine deposits at the deposit surface. Mineralogical composition of travertine varies from calcite to siderite and all carbonates contain significant amounts of Mn. Decreased formation temperature and depletion in the REE content point to an influence of pH-neutralized cold ground water and dying magmatic system.

    Description: The Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) interval at the Wadi Nukhul section (Sinai, Egypt) is represented by a 10 cm thick condensed clay-rich layer corresponding to the NP9a–NP9b nannofossil subzone boundary. The Wadi Nukhul Palaeocene–Eocene boundary (PEB) is characterized by (1) an abrupt negative excursion in carbonate and organic carbon isotope ratios (–6 in 13 C carb and –2 13 C org ), (2) an abrupt persistent negative shift in organic nitrogen isotope values ( 15 N org ), (3) a significant increase in phosphorus concentrations just above the carbon isotope excursion, (4) a decrease in carbonate content and significant increase in kaolinite and (5) high vanadium and low manganese contents coincident with the occurrence of framboidal pyrite. The abrupt correlative isotopic excursions of 13 C carb , 13 C org and 15 N suggest that the lowermost part of the PETM is missing. The decrease in carbonate content indicates dilution by high detrital input triggered by acid weathering and carbonate dissolution in response to increased atmospheric CO 2 resulting from the oxidation of methane. The sudden increase in kaolinite content reflects a short-lived change to humid conditions. The 15 N values close to 0 above the PEB suggest a bloom of N 2 -fixing cyanobacteria. Increased bacterial activity may be either the cause or the result of the anoxia locally associated with the PETM.

    Description: The Chicxulub impact is commonly believed to have caused the Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary mass extinction and a thin impact spherule layer in the North Atlantic and Caribbean is frequently cited as proof. We evaluated this claim in the seven best North Atlantic and Caribbean Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary sequences based on high-resolution biostratigraphy, quantitative faunal analyses and stable isotopes. Results reveal a major Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary unconformity spanning most of Danian subzone P1a(1) and Maastrichtian zones CF1–CF2 (~400 ka) in the NW Atlantic Bass River core, ODP Sites 1049A, 1049C and 1050C. In the Caribbean ODP Sites 999B and 1001B the unconformity spans from the early Danian zone P1a(1) through to zones CF1–CF4 (~3 Ma). Only in the Demerara Rise ODP Site 1259B is erosion relatively minor and restricted to the earliest Danian zone P0 and most of subzone P1a(1) (~150 ka). In all sites examined, Chicxulub impact spherules are reworked into the early Danian subzone P1a(1) about 150–200 ka after the mass extinction. A similar pattern of erosion and redeposition of impact spherules in Danian sediments has previously been documented from Cuba, Haiti, Belize, Guatemala, south and central Mexico. This pattern can be explained by intensified Gulf stream circulation at times of climate cooling and sea level changes. The age of the Chicxulub impact cannot be determined from these reworked impact spherule layers, but can be evaluated based on the stratigraphically oldest spherule layer in NE Mexico and Texas, which indicates that this impact predates the Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary by about 130–150 ka.

    Description: New sedimentological, biostratigraphical and geochemical data recording the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) are reported from a marginal marine succession in southern Beaujolais, France. The serpentinum and bifrons ammonite zones record black shales with high (1–10 wt%) total organic carbon contents (TOC) and dysoxia-tolerant benthic fauna typical of the ‘Schistes Carton’ facies well documented in contemporaneous nearby basins. The base of the serpentinum ammonite zone, however, differs from coeval strata of most adjacent basinal series in that it presents several massive storm beds particularly enriched in juvenile ammonites and the dysoxia-tolerant, miniaturized gastropod Coelodiscus . This storm-dominated interval records a marked negative 5 carbonate and organic carbon isotope excursion being time-equivalent with that recording storm- and mass flow-deposits in sections of the Lusitanian Basin, Portugal, pointing to the existence of a major tempestite/turbidite event over tropical areas during the T-OAE. Although several explanations remain possible at present, we favour climatically induced changes in platform morphology and storm activity as the main drivers of these sedimentological features. In addition, we show that recent weathering, most probably due to infiltration of O 2 -rich meteoric water, resulted in the preferential removal of 12 C-enriched organic carbon, dramatic TOC loss and total destruction of the lamination of the black shale sequence over most of the studied exposure. These latter observations imply that extreme caution should be applied when interpreting the palaeoenvironmental significance of sediments lacking TOC enrichment and lamination from outcrops with limited surface exposures.
