Notes: Abstract The recent artificial intelligence techniques are commonly applied to solving problems in which multidimensional statistical analyses of various quantities and their modelling prognostic functions can be used. This paper attempts to summarize the characteristics of the prognostic functions applied in the determination of the maximum possible earthquake. Geonomic quantities are reviewed and categorized with respect to their influence upon the estimation of the maximum possible earthquake.

Notes: Abstract Qualitative geological acceptance criteria and quantitative seismological acceptance criteria for radioactive waste disposals are developed. The background material for the initiation of site selection and for its earthquake hazard assessment is discussed. The recent movements of the Earth's surface as well as the other mechanical properties of geological media, hydrological conditions of geological blocks, their groundwater chemistry, geochemical rheology, petrological analyses of rocks, etc., have to be taken into account. A new comprehensive integrated safety analysis of the final underground disposal of spent nuclear fuel has been underway in the Czech Republic since 1991. In accordance with these seismogeological acceptance criteria regions for building underground final radioactive waste disposals are singled out in the Czech Republic.

Notes: Abstract One hundred and twenty-eight strong ground motion CALTECH (Earthquakes in the U.S.A., 1940–1971) records of five Californian earthquakes, recorded at ground level and in basements, for which the modified Mercalli macroseismic intensities are known, were statistically processed to calculate 165 wave parameters. Correlation of the peak values of particle acceleration, velocity and displacement, energy, impulse and root-mean-square amplitude of the vibrations, durations of vibrations for certain levels of the peak amplitude, and spectral energies of 10 frequency windows with macroseismic intensity are discussed from the viewpoint of classification of ground-motion records.

Notes: Abstract The algorithms to evaluate seismic hazard, used and/or developed by five teams participating in the TERESA project, applied to the low seismicity area ‘Belgium, The Netherlands and NW Germany’ are compared. The main differences in the results can be explained by the majority criterion of Egozcue et al. (1989), the differences in the upper bound and zonification and, in some cases, by a higher attenuation.

Notes: Abstract Within the activity of the ESC Subcommission 8 ‘Engineering Seismology’, Project TERESA, seismic hazard calculations have been performed for two areas of a different earthquake activity. Fundamental seismological data (earthquake catalogues, macroseismic observations and maps) and some additional geological information were analyzed and processed to prepare inputs for hazard computations. Great attention has been paid to verifying the reliability of the input data. Seismic hazards obtained for five sites of the region of high seismic activity (Sannio-Matese, southern Italy) and six sites of the region of low seismic activity (Brabant Massif and northern Rhine, Belgium—The Netherlands—Germany) are presented and discussed.

Notes: Summary The investigated region covers the territories of Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the G.D.R., Hungary, Moldavia, Poland, Romania and the south-western Ukraine and parts of Austria, Greece, and Yugoslavia. Maps of epicentres demonstrate the geographical distribution of activity. Earthquakes occur in several seismogenic belts (provinces) related to neotectonic features of the region. A special phenomenon is the intermediate-depth focus of Vrancea releasing in the region the largest amounts of energy, together with a few crustal foci in Bulgaria.

Notes: Summary The earthquake pattern in the N.E.R. of India is investigated on the background of tectonic conditions. The epicentre maps and the cross-sections indicate some regularities in the spatial distribution of foci, particularly the existence of a Benioff zone, dipping down to 200 km at an angle of 35°–40° to the East between 25° N and 21° N. The shallow and intermediate activities in the Indoburmese zone seem to be mutually related as evidenced by the coincidence of periods of quiescence and activity. The origin of the largest of the whole region (15 Aug. 1950, M=8.6) can be accommodated in the statistics only by assuming a very large preparatory area also encompassing the “extended” Mishmi region. This event seems to be a rather exceptional event with the return period larger than the sample used for investigation, i.e. 54 years. The problem of a gap in the region of the Upper Assam remains open, the lack of activity also be explained also by pure geological reasons, i.e. by the age of the stable geological formation. The maps and the statistics of extremes provide the estimate of probability of occurrence of large events for practical purpose.

Notes: Summary The time development of three large sequences, Friuli 1976, Thessaloniki 1978 and Monte Negro-Albania 1979, was investigated by analysing the characteristics of the time distribution of magnitudes of the events, M(t), of average magnitudes, $$\overline M $$ (t), and of the number of events, n(t), as well as the strain release curves and the magnitude-frequency relations, N(M). The existence of time gaps and of an anomalous decay of the numbers of shocks before major events, as well as the oscillation of $$\overline M $$ (≈ const b−1) may be considered as precursory phenomena. The clustering of events has been tested by the Poisson and negative binomial laws.
