Summary Besides our continuous synoptic records of the air-electric elements in the region of the Zugspitze (Wetterstein Mountains, Bavarian Alps) a measuring excursion has been undertaken to the «Zugspitzplatt» in order to clarify some special questions (August 1954). On this plateau, 2500 meters above sea level, readings of the potential gradient have been recorded with a transportable instrument and the polar conductivities of the air have been measured. Comparing exactly the readings recorded on the Zugspitze-Peak (Z, 2963 meters above sea level) with those recorded on the Zugspitzplatt (P) we could show that the values measured on the peak — in spite of the exposed situation of this station — have to be considered as representative and free from disturbing secondary phenomena. Our former observation that the accessory potential gradient during snow-fall has a positive sign, and during rain shows a negative one, has been confirmed. On days when convection prevails, the deviation of the diurnal variation of the potential gradient onP from the diurnal variation onZ indicates distinctly the elevation up to 2500 m, caused by the exchance, of nuclei and large ions. During fog lifted up from lower cloud levels (stratus, stratocumulus) potential gradient and polar conductivities on stationP show the same behaviour as in low altitudes. If stationP is reached by descending currents, the negative conductivity sometimes is clearly observed to rise separately. It has been noticed that on the base of a standing lenticular crest cloud there are free electric charges of negative sign, and on the upper surface, probably, positive ones. On the surface or fore part of these clouds a separate increase of the negative conductivity could be measured distinctly.
Notes:
