Description: The pollution history of the metals iron, chromium, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, copper, cadmium, and mercury in a sediment profile from the German Bight (southeastern part of the North Sea; Förstner & Reineck, 1974) has been re-interpreted according to new radiometric age data from 210Pb and 137Cs concentrations. Between two units of relative uniform sedimentation - approx. 18 mm/y at 7-19 cm sediment depth and approx. 16 mm/y for the core section from 28-50 cm - a major hiatus and an interval of abnormally low sedimentation rate has been detected (19-28 cm) indicating that sediments deposited at the beginning of the century are directly covered by the most recent sediments. Contamination by Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd and Hg has increased since the second half of the last century, probably due to higher metal inputs from both fossil fuel burning and sewage effluents. The more recent increase of iron, chromium, nickel, and cobalt is possibly related to the dumping of acid iron waste from titanium oxide production.

Description: Recent sediments off East Africa coast show 5 facies, parallel the coast: biogene carbonate sand, olivgrey mud, foraminiferal sand, globigerine ooze, and deep sea clay. These sediments decrease progressively in grain size, carbonate content and shell debris away from the coast. They differ in the primary and biogenetic structures, degree of bioturbation, lebensspuren and content of fecal pellets.

Notes: Sand and clay porosities of foreshore, tidal flat, and shallow sea sediments from the southern North Sea were determined. No definite relationship could be observed between porosity, condensation ratio, and depositional environment.Porosity increases with increasing clay content. The clay porosity probably depends to some degree on the rate of sedimentation. The porosity of experimentally deposited sands increases with decreasing grain size. The same relation can be observed with fossil sandstones. In Recent sands, this increase may be compensated by a closer packing arrangement of the finer grains, expressed by a higher condensation ratio〈displayedItem type="mathematics" xml:id="mu1" numbered="no"〉〈mediaResource alt="image" href="urn:x-wiley:00370746:SED294:SED_294_mu1"/〉(P= natural porosity, Pw and Pd are the porosities of the loosest and closest arrangements under water, respectively).Under certain conditions, the sand(stone) porosity decreases continuously with increasing depth (Fig. 7).

Notes: Ripple, flaser and lenticular bedding are well known, but for describing profiles, they are not sufficiently defined and subdivided. It is, therefore, the intent of the following text to present such a definition and classification. The classification contains the following main bedding types and intermediary types (Fig.1):〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:00370746:SED99:SED_99_f1" location="image_n/SED_99_f1.gif"/〉〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1Cross-bedding with flasers.2Flaser bedding, subdivided in: (a) simple flaser bedding; (b) bifurcated flaser bedding; (c) wavy flaser bedding; (d) bifurcated wavy flaser bedding.3Wavy bedding.4Lenticular bedding with thick or flat lenses, subdivided in: (a) continuous lenticular bedding (with connected lenses); (b) broken lenticular bedding (with single lenses).

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A diagram is constructed to show the relationship between physiotope, sediment structures sediment textures and endofauna. In this diagram the differences between subenvironments can be pointed out. It is also possible to compare clastic environments if biological parameters are neglected.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Thin sandlayers embedded in mud of various depositional sedimentary environments are compared. From a study of their characteristics such as grading, internal structure, size, lateral decrease of grain size and form, conclusions can be drawn about the various sedimentary environments.
