    Notes: Abstract We examined the spatial distribution of genotypes in a perennial population of eelgrass, Zostera marina L., at two spatial scales. We mapped and sampled 80 ramets in a subtidal area of 20 × 80 m, and an additional 15 ramets in two 1-m2 sub-quadrats. Ramets were genotyped for seven polymorphic microsatellite loci. Among a total number of 54 genotypes detected, 12 occurred more than once. The ramets of ten of these genotypes occurred in clusters and represented genets based on their expected multi-locus genotype frequencies. The size distribution of genets was uneven with estimated ramet numbers ranging from 2 to 5000. Whereas some areas displayed a high genet diversity, which may indicate past disturbances, large genets (≥10 m2) predominated in other locations of the sampled plot. Spatial heterogeneity in clone distribution was also obvious at the smaller sampling scale (15 ramets sampled within 1 m2) where the clonal diversity (genets identified/ramets sampled) was 0.24 in one quadrat, and 0.077 in the other. Ramets belonging to the largest clone were maximally 17 m apart, which corresponds to a genet age of 67 yr based on annual rhizome growth rates. We conclude that the spatial arrangement of clones in seagrasses allows inferences about the past demography and the disturbance regime at a given site which may prove useful for coastal zone management of ecologically valuable seagrass meadows.

    Notes: Abstract In order to investigate how episodes of geological and climatic change have influenced the distribution and evolutionary diversification of Arctic to cold temperate-North Atlantic seaweed species, intraspecific genetic variation was analyzed among isolates of the sublittoral, benthic red alga Phycodrys rubens (collected between June 1992 and January 1994). Rooted phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences and the plastid encoded Rubisco spacer sequences suggest that P. rubens invaded the North Atlantic from the Pacific shortly after the opening of the Bering Strait (3 to 3.5 million years ago), colonizing both the western and eastern Atlantic coasts. Based on these data we further hypothesize that P. rubens survived along the European coasts during the more recent Pleistocene glaciations, while becoming locally extinct along the North American Atlantic coasts. Following retraction of the last ice sheet, the western Atlantic coast was colonized a second time from the Pacific. The presence of two distinct genetic types (based on ITS and Rubisco sequences) along the European coasts is postulated to be a result of isolation and subsequent differentiation. This is likely because ice-free areas are known to have existed in northern Scotland and Norway during the last glaciation. The presence of an East Atlantic genetic type along the West Atlantic coast is believed to be a recent introduction (caused by human activity) of P. rubens to Newfoundland.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: To examine the drug prescription pattern in Danish women from 12 weeks prior to conception until 12 weeks post-partum. Method: A drug utilization study based on The North Jutland Prescription Database. The Danish pharmacies use a computerized accounting system for all subsidized drugs and this was linked to the Danish Medical Birth Registry concerning prescription patterns for all women who had given birth in the county of North Jutland from 1991 to 1996. Results: The analysis included 16 001 primiparous women, who had redeemed 34 834 prescriptions prior to, during and after pregnancy. During pregnancy 44.2% of the women received prescriptions for at least one drug. Users received 2.6 prescriptions on average during pregnancy; 5% of the users redeemed 24.2% of all prescriptions. The proportion of women who redeemed prescriptions for more than three different drugs was 2.7%. The majority of prescriptions were for antibiotics (28.7%), gynaecological drugs (13.3%) and anti-asthma drugs (7.6%). The post-partum prescription proportion was 34.0% and the majority of the prescriptions during this period were for penicillins (20.1%), opthalmologicals (15.5%) and corticosteroids for dermatological use (5.7%). Conclusion: A high proportion of the women received drugs during pregnancy. The pattern of drug use within the Anatomical Therapeutical Chemical (ATC) groups changed, i.e. the amount of broad spectrum antibiotics decreased and the proportion of prescriptions for local use increased. A small proportion of women redeemed prescriptions for more than three different drugs during pregnancy.

    Notes: Summary Nine healthy adults were administered indocyanine green (ICG) 0.5 mg·kg−1 IV alone and after the administration of the following oral drugs: nifedipine 10 mg, propranolol 80 mg, propranolol 80 mg and nifedipine 10 mg, and propranolol 80 mg after nifedipine 10 mg every 8 h for 5 days. Heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) were also determined. Nifedipine increased ICG clearance by 14% and decreased t1/2 by 26%. Propranolol decreased ICG clearance by 21% and increased t1/2 42%. Nifedipine and propranolol given together increased ICG clearance 63% and decreased t1/2 by 19%. All changes were statistically significant. Propranolol given after multiple doses of nifedipine did not change ICG kinetic parameters. Propranolol Cmax, tmax, oral clearance, and t1/2 did not change after nifedipine therapy. However, partial propranolol AUC values between 0–0.33, 0–0.5, 0–1.0 and 0–1.5 h were significantly larger after single and multiple doses of nifedipine indicating higher propranolol concentrations during the absorption phase. Heart rate and MAP did not change after nifedipine treatment. Similar declines in heart rate and MAP occurred after propranolol alone and propranolol after single and multiple doses of nifedipine.

    Notes: An algorithm for the evaluation of correlated dipole–dipole dispersion coefficients by direct MCSCF linear response theory is presented. Stepwise construction of a pseudo-state basis using eigenvectors of successive (Cauchy) moments of the linear response function gives an efficient scheme for obtaining polarizabilities at imaginary frequency. The scheme is also useful for polarizabilities on the real axis below the frequency of the first dipole-allowed transition. Sample calculations of C6 coefficients are described for a range of two-electron (H−, He, Li+, Be2+, H2, and H+3 ) and many-electron (Be, N, N2 ) closed- and open-shell systems.

    Notes: Two single-crystal energy-dispersive crystallographic methods (the fixed-crystal method and the rotating-crystal method) are described and investigated. Formulae for integrated intensities are derived for mosaic and perfect single crystals. Experimental results and a comparison between measured and calculated integrated intensities for a perfect germanium crystal are given. Special features and possible applications of the methods are discussed.

    Notes: The Debye-Waller factor for powdered magnesium was measured in the temperature range 293 to 700 K by the energy-dispersive X-ray method. The results are compared with published theoretical calculations based on the quasi-harmonic and the anharmonic approximations. Anisotropy was found in the behaviour of the temperature factor B(T), with excellent agreement in the a axis direction between the experimental and theoretical calculations within the quasi-harmonic approximation. In the c axis direction, however, the experimental values at increasing temperature exceed the theoretical values, even in the anharmonic approximation.

    Notes: Polarization measurements of the primary X-ray beam produced by thick copper and tungsten anodes are reported and formulas derived for integrated intensities of Bragg reflections in energy-dispersive diffractometry with the polarization of the primary beam taken into account. It was found that for an angle of 45° between the scattering plane and the plane containing the electron beam and the primary beam, the influence of polarization vanishes, while it increases as the angle changes from 45° to either 0 or 90°. For the latter values, the influence of polarization is considerable at high photon energies and at scattering angles close to 90°.
