Notes: Abstract The gradient diffusion parameterization of the Reynolds stress is modified by adding a bulk momentum transport term. Comparisons to available data indicate that this term accounts for the gusts or ‘downsweeps’ of higher momentum fluid into the canopy and ejections of lower momentum fluid out of the canopy. This term results in realistic mean wind speed profiles.

Notes: Abstract A numerical model was developed to simulate neutrally stratified air flow over and through a forest edge. The spatially averaged equations for turbulent flow in vegetation canopies are derived as the governing equations. A first-order closure scheme with the capability of accounting for the bulk momentum transport process in vegetation canopies is employed. The averaged equations are solved numerically by a fractional time-step method and successive relaxation. The asymptotic solution in time is regarded as the steady-state solution. Comparisons of model output to the field measurements of Raynor (1971) indicate that the model provides a realistic mean flow. Momentum balance computations show that the pressure gradient induced by the wind blowing against the forest edge is significant and has the same order of magnitude as the drag force in the edge region. The edge effect involves the generation of drag forces, the appearance of a large pressure gradient, the upward deflection of mean flow and the transport of momentum into the edge of the canopy.

Notes: Abstract Turbulent flow within and above an almond orchard was measured with three-dimensional wind sensors and fine-wire thermocouple sensors arranged in a horizontal array. The data showed organized turbulent structures as indicated by coherent asymmetric ramp patterns in the time series traces across the sensor array. Space-time correlation analysis indicated that velocity and temperature fluctuations were significantly correlated over a transverse distance more than 4m. Integral length scales of velocity and temperature fluctuations were substantially greater in unstable conditions than those in stable conditions. The coherence spectral analysis indicated that Davenport's geometric similarity hypothesis was satisfied in the lower frequency region. From the geometric similarity hypothesis, the spatial extents of large ramp structures were also estimated with the coherence functions.

Notes: Abstract A method is described for determining the enantiomeric composition of chiral alcohols, lactones, and hydroxy acids in quantities ranging from 25 ng to 10 μg. Derivatization of the substance with chirally pure acetyl lactate, followed by splitless capillary gas chromatography, enables enantiomeric determinations to be made within 1–3% of the actual value. This technique was applied in the determination of semiochemical inIps pini (Say),Apis mellifera (L.), andCryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens). The results indicate that considerable variability exists within populations of some insects in the composition of their chiral semiochemicals, whereas others produce substances of constant composition.

Notes: Abstract Analyses of the enantiomeric composition of ipsdienol produced by individual male pine engravers,Ips pini (Say), from six populations in British Columbia, support the hypothesis that New York and Idaho races of this species hybridize in southeastern British Columbia. Production profiles, expressed as frequency distributions of (+):(-) ipsdienol ratios [= ratio of (S)-(+)-ipsdienol to (R)-(-)-ipsdienol], were bimodal for four western British Columbia populations. The (+):(-) ratios ranged from 63:37 to 71:29. consistent with those previously found for the New York race. The profile for a southeastern population from Radium, British Columbia, was intermediate between those for the four western British Columbia populations and that from one population in Kimberley, British Columbia, just south of Radium. Males in the Kimberley population produce predominantly (R)-(-)-ipsdienol, typical of California nad Idaho males. Response profiles of different individuals ofI. pini, determined by captures of beetles in multiple-funnel traps baited with ipsdienol of 11 different (+):(-) ratios, were not consistent with production profiles. Populations in Williams Lake and Princeton, in western British Columbia, and Radium, in southeastern British Columbia, had response profiles with maximal attraction to ipsdienol over a broad range of (+):(-) ratios, falling off as enantiomeric purity was approached at either end of the spectrum. This type of response profile is consistent with that for the New York race, which has been shown to respond optimally to (+):(-) ratios ranging from 40:60 to 70:30. The response profile of the Kimberley population gradually declined from maximal attraction to ipsdienol with a (+):(-) ratio of 2:98 to the lowest response at a (+):(-) ratio of 98:2. The attraction ofI. pini to chemical stimuli in California is interrupted by ipsdienol with a (+):(-) ratio 〉5:95, a pheromone of a host competitor, the California five-spined ips,Ips paraconfusus Lanier. We hypothesie that the Idaho race, which does not compete withI. paraconfusus due to geographical separation, is characterized by a Kimberley-type enantiomeric response profile, intermediate between those of the New York and California races.

Notes: Abstract We determined the chirality of ipsdienol in individual male pine engravers,Ips pini (Say), from New York, California, and two localities in British Columbia (BC). Both quantity and chirality of ipsdienol varied significantly between and within populations ofI. pini. Beetles from California and southeastern BC produced primarily (R)-(−)-ipsdienol with mean ratios of (S)-(+) : (R)-(−) of 9 : 91 and 11 : 89, respectively, while beetles from New York produced primarily (S)-(+)-ipsdienol with a mean (S)-(+) : (R)-(−) ratio of 57 : 43. A population from southwestern BC was unlike any other known western population, producing primarily (S)-(+)-ipsdienol with a mean (S)-(+) : (R)-(−) ratio of 66 : 34. In contrast to the unimodal chirality profiles for ipsdienol production in populations from California and southeastern BC, the profiles of the populations from southwestern BC and New York were bimodal, with a common mode at approximately 44 : 56 (S)-(+) : (R)-(−). Bimodality in the profiles of ipsdienol chirality in two populations ofI. pini and remarkably high levels of intrapopulation variation in pheromone chirality in all four populations suggest that evolutionary change in pheromone channels of communication could occur, possibly in response to artificial selection pressures such as mass trapping.

Notes: Abstract Lanierone strongly synergized the attraction of male and female Ips pini (Say) to ipsdienol in New York and Wisconsin. Synergy was only weakly significant in Montana and British Columbia and not significant in California. Catches of I. pini in ipsdienol-baited traps were increased 0% ( i.e., nonsignificant) to 9942% by lanierone, with the highest increases in eastern North America. Lanierone had the least effect in California. The effects of lanierone on sex ratios of I. pini in trap catches varied significantly between regions. The addition of lanierone to ipsdienol-baited traps resulted in a general increase in male representation at nine of 12 sites. Ips integer (Eichhoff) was attracted to lanierone alone. Ipsdienol reduced the response of I. integer to lanierone. Enoclerus lecontei (Wolcott) (Cleridae) preferred traps baited with the combination of ipsdienol and lanierone. (R)-(–)-Ipsdienol was attractive to E. sphegeus (F.), Thanasimus undatulus (Say) (Cleridae), and Temnochila chlorodia (Mannerheim) (Trogositidae), while racemic ipsdienol was attractive to E. nigrifrons var. gerhardi Wolc. and Thanasimus dubius (F.). Lanierone had no effect on these species.

Notes: Abstract The plastic deformation of β and γ phase silver-tin alloys, which are of significance in the formulation of dental amalgam, has been studied using transmission electron microscopy and electron channelling. Deformation twinning in the ordered orthorhombic γ phase on {0 1 1} planes has been confirmed and another twin plane {2 1 1} has been identified. The γ phase was also found to deform by slip on {0 0 1} and {0 1 0} planes; superlattice dislocations with Burgers vectors 1/2[1 0 0 ] have been identified on the (0 0 1) plane. The disordered h c p β phase deforms essentially by slip on the basal (0 0 0 1) plane by glide of 1/3〈¯2 1 1 0〉 dislocations.

Notes: Electron diffraction evidence confirming the ordered orthorhombic crystal structure of the γ phase of the silver-tin system has been obtained, and it has been established by optical metallography that an alloy with a composition corresponding to the dental amalgam alloy formula Ag3Sn (i.e., 26.85 wt % Sn) lies outside the single γ phase field and in the duplex (γ + Sn) phase field adjacent to it. Studies of the mechanism of the hardening reaction of single crystals of homogeneous γ phase alloys with mercury were carried out using both scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Mercury attack occurred preferentially along welldefined planes in the single crystals. Using electron channeling and trace analysis techniques these planes of preferential attack were found to be {010} and {011}, and from transmission electron microscopy of thin foils these were shown to be slip bands and deformation twins, respectively. In bicrystals of γ phase material, preferential attack also occurred along grain boundaries. Similar preferential mercury attack, leading to the development of deep planar intrusions into the γ phase material, was observed in an experimental dental amalgam prepared from a lathe-cut homogeneous γ phase amalgam alloy. It is believed that the presence of such features would have important implications for the clinical performance of dental amalgam.

Notes: The objective of the investigation was to examine the reactions of mercury with silver-tin alloys with compositions spanning the phase fields β, (β + γ), γ, and (γ + Sn). The experimental methods employed include the application of light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis. These techniques were used to investigate the mechanisms of reaction and to identify the nature and morphology of the reaction products formed on bulk specimens of the alloys. The progress and characteristics of the reactionsthat occur during hardening of amalgams prepared from powders of these alloys were monitored using a highsensitivity dilatometer. These results were correlated with direct observations on the development of the microstructures. The reaction of mercury with the β-phase alloy occurred rapidly and resulted in a very marked and rapid expansion during the initial stages of hardening. γ-Phase alloys, on the other hand, reacted more slowly and contracted markedly during hardening. The behavior of amalgams made from alloys with compositions lying between these two extremes appeared to be explicable in terms of the characteristics of the separate phases from which they were constituted.
