    Description / Table of Contents: High Resolution Electron Microscopy Investigations of La2CeTaO6Cl3 and its Thermal Decomposition Product La2Cex3+Ce1-x4+ TaO6Cl3-xThe thermal decomposition of the hexagonal La2CeTaO6Cl3 led to a mixed-valent product La2Cex3+Ce1-x4+ TaO6Cl3-x with a complicated monoclinic structure. The detailed inspection shows two subunits A and B, which form the monoclinic unit cell by a ABAB sequence. The subunit A is almost identical to the hexagonal cell of the starting material while subunit B has additional Ln- and Cl-positions. For this reason, the main structure features of the monoclinic compound and the starting material are related, which is clearly seen in the electron microscopy investigations. As might be expected from the relationship between the subunits A and B one can observe defects in the monoclinic compound arising from the various possibilities of combining these building elements. We also found structure defects in the hexagonal starting material, which are caused by the presence of the subunit B.
    Notes: Durch thermischen Abbau der hexagonalen Verbindung La2CeTaO6Cl3 entsteht unter partieller Reduktion von Ce4+ ein Produkt mit einer komplizierten monoklinen Struktur und einer Zusammensetzung, die sich von der Formel La2Cex3+Ce1-x4+ TaO6Cl3-x ableitet. Die Elementarzelle läßt sich in der Projektion längs [010] durch die Abfolge ABAB der beiden Bauelemente A und B beschreiben. In A ist die hexagonale Struktur von La2CeTaO6Cl3 erhalten geblieben, während sie in B modifiziert vorliegt; damit weist die neue monokline Zelle noch weitgehend strukturelle Merkmale der hexagonalen Ausgangsverbindung auf. Bei elektronenmikroskopischen Untersuchungen in Hochauflösung war die strukturelle Verwandtschaft der hexagonalen und der monoklinen Verbindung unmittelbar wiederzuerkennen. Die Ähnlichkeit der Bauelemente A und B ermöglicht Fehlordnungen mit unterschiedlichen Abfolgen von A und B, die in Kristallbruchstücken der monoklinen Verbindung gefunden wurden. Auch in der hexagonalen Ausgangsverbindung wurden Baufehler beobachtet, die dem Bauelement B der monoklinen Verbindung entsprechen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis and Crystal Structure of PbMo5O8; a reduced Oxomolybdate with Mo10O28 Double OctahedraThe crystal structure of the new phase PbMo5O8 contains oligometric Mo clusters which consist of two edge-sharing Mo6 octahedra connected according to Mo10O6iO4/2i-iO16/2i-a. The compound is isotypic with LaMo5O8. Isolated, divalent Pb atoms are located in the “channels” of the monoclinic structure (a = 999.3(2) pm, b = 924.7(1) pm, c = 753.6(2) pm, β = 109.39(2)°, P21/a. Compared to the compound In 11Mo40O62 the Mo—O distances (average 206 pm) and the Mo—Mo distances within the octahedral units (average 275 pm) are slightly decreased by 1 and 4 pm, respectively. The very short Mo—Mo distances (278 pm) between the cluster units which are not observed in In11Mo40O62 (320 pm) are due to excess electrons in these inter-cluster bonds which would otherwise occupy antibonding cluster states.
    Notes: Mit der neuen Phase PbMo5O8 wurde ein weiteres Beispiel für oligomere Mo-Cluster aus zwei kantenverknüpften Mo6-Oktaedern gefunden, die nach Mo10O6iO4/2i-iO16sol;2i-a verknüpft sind. Die Verbindung ist isotyp zu LaMo5O8. In den „Kanälen“ der monoklinen Struktur a = 999,3(2) pm, b = 924,7(1) pm, c = 753,6(2) pm, β = 109,39(2)°, P21/a) findet man isolierte, zweiwertige Pb-Atome. Gegenüber der Verbindung In11Mo40O62 sind die Mo—O-Abstände mit durchschnittlich 206 pm nur gering um 1 pm und die Mo—Mo-Abstände innerhalb der oktaedrischen Baueinheiten mit durchschnittlich 275 pm ebenfalls nur schwach um 4 pm verkürzt. Allerdings findet man mit 278 pm sehr kurze Mo—Mo-Abstände zwischen den Clustereinheiten, die so nicht bei In11Mo40O62 (320 pm) beobachtet werden können. An diesen inter-Cluster-Bindungen sind überschüssige Elektronen beteiligt, die andernfalls antibindende Clusterzustände besetzen würden.

    Notes: Mit der Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie können bei kristallisierten Feststoffen kleine Baugruppen aus wenigen Koordinationspolyedern mit nahezu atomarer Auflösung direkt abgebildet werden („lattice imaging“). Genauere Kenntnisse der Voraussetzungen für die Direktabbildung sowie Verbesserungen an den Elektronenmikroskopen ermöglichen es heute, sehr kleine Defektbereiche (Mikrodomänen), Fehler in der Abfolge von Baugruppen oder Atomschichten (planare bzw. Wadsley-Defekte) sowie vereinzelte Baufehler in eng begrenzten Bereichen zu untersuchen, die kleiner als eine Elementarzelle sein können. Das Strukturprinzip kleinster geordneter Bereiche läßt sich auch dann noch bestimmen, wenn die Röntgen-Strukturanalyse versagt. Als Modelle zur Erprobung und Weiterentwicklung der Hochauflösungsmethode sind „Blockstrukturen“ besonders geeignet; an ihnen wurde der Nachweis dreidimensionaler, zweidimensionaler und eindimensionaler Defekte studiert.

    Notes: A method for preparing needle-shaped and platelike crystals for electron microscopical investigation was elaborated. Crystals of H-Nb2O5 were embedded in a synthetic resin and disks were cut off perpendicular to the desired direction of observation. The thickness of the sample was reduced by planar grinding and then by using a dimple grinder and furthermore by ion milling with argon ions. With the precision ion milling system small crystal areas were selected and subsequently irradiated. The TEM investigations showed that the desired crystallographic orientation was reached and that the crystal structure has been preserved. The contrast of highly resolved images was reduced by an amorphous surface layer which was not removable.

    Notes: Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can be used with crystalline solids to obtain direct images of small structural groups comprising a few coordination polyhedra with resolution nearly down to atomic scale (“lattice imaging”). More exact knowledge of the conditions required for direct imaging, as well as improvements in the instruments themselves, have now made it possible to examine very small defect regions (microdomains), faults in the stacking sequence of structural groups or atom layers (planar or Wadsley defects), and isolated defects in narrowly delimited areas that may actually be below the dimensions of the unit cell. The structural principle of the very smallest ordered regions can even be determined when X-ray structure analysis proves unable to do this. “Block structures” are particularly suitable as models for the testing and further development of the high-resolution method; the detection of three-dimensional, two-dimensional, and one-dimensional defects has been studied on such structures.
