    Notes: Just above the liquid-vapor critical point, a fluid's large compressibility causes a stable stratification in which the density varies by as much as 10% in 1 cm. This stratification supports internal gravity waves which we observed with an oscillator immersed in a near-critical xenon sample. We found the number and frequencies of the observable modes depended on the sample cell's orientation, with only two modes seen in the horizontal cell. The frequencies of the two modes had different temperature dependences: with decreasing temperature, the higher frequency increased monotonically from 0.7 to 2.8 Hz, but the lower frequency varied nonmonotonically, with a maximum of 1.0 Hz at 20 mK above the critical temperature. These temperature dependences continued to 20 mK below the critical temperature, where the xenon was separated into liquid and vapor phases. We calculated these two frequencies by solving the eigenvalue problem of internal waves in a box containing a stratified fluid. The fluid's density profile was obtained from xenon's equation of state. The calculated and measured frequencies agree to within 15%. Analytical calculations based on simple approximations of the density profile provide insight into the observed temperature dependences. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of rigid vertical boundaries on the onset of convective instability is calculated for the salt finger regime of double-diffusive convection. The unperturbed state is a quiescent fluid with constant vertical gradients of temperature and solute, which are stabilizing and destabilizing, respectively. The horizontal boundaries are taken to be stress-free and perfectly conducting. The lateral boundaries are perfectly insulating for solute. Changing from thermally insulating to thermally conducting sidewalls results in a strong destabilization of the flow for large thermal Rayleigh numbers even in the limit that the separation between the sidewalls approaches infinity. Further, for thermally conducting sidewalls, a decrease in the separation of the sidewalls may destabilize the system.

    Notes: The effect of time-periodic vertical gravity modulation on the onset of thermosolutal convection in an infinite horizontal layer with stress-free boundaries is investigated using Floquet theory for the linear stability analysis. Situations for which the fluid layer is stably stratified in either the fingering or diffusive regimes of double-diffusive convection are considered. Results are presented both with and without steady background acceleration. Modulation may stabilize an unstable base solution or destabilize a stable base solution. In addition to synchronous and subharmonic response to the modulation frequency, instability in the double-diffusive system can occur via a complex conjugate mode. In the diffusive regime, where oscillatory onset occurs in the unmodulated system, regions of resonant instability occur and exhibit strong coupling with the unmodulated oscillatory frequency. The response to modulation of the fundamental instability of the unmodulated system is described both analytically and numerically; in the double-diffusive system this mode persists under subcritical conditions as a high-frequency lobe.

    Notes: The effect of vertical, sinusoidal, time-dependent gravitational acceleration on the onset of solutal convection during directional solidification is analyzed in the limit of large modulation frequency Ω. When the unmodulated state is unstable, the modulation amplitude required to stabilize the system is determined by the method of averaging, and is O(Ω). Comparison of the results from the averaged equations with numerical solutions of the full linear stability equations (based on Floquet theory) show that the difference is O(Ω1/2). When the unmodulated state is stable, resonant modes of instability occur at large modulation amplitude. These are analyzed using matched asymptotic expansions to elucidate the boundary-layer structure for both the Rayleigh–Bénard and directional solidification configurations. The leading-order term for the modulation amplitude is of O(Ω2); the first-order correction of O(Ω3/2) is calculated, and the results are compared with numerical solutions of the full linear stability equations. Based on these analyses, a thorough examination of the dependence of the stability criteria on the unmodulated Rayleigh number, Schmidt number, and distribution coefficient, is carried out.

    Notes: The effect of thermosolutal convection on the solute segregation in crystals grown by vertical directional solidification of binary metallic alloys or semiconductors is considered. Numerical results are obtained using finite differences in a two-dimensional, time-dependent model that assumes a planar crystal–melt interface. The configuration is assumed to be periodic in the horizontal direction with a given period, and the possibility of multiple flow states sharing the same period is examined. The results are summarized in bifurcation diagrams of the nonlinear states associated with the critical points of linear theory. The use of a time-dependent numerical scheme results in gaps in the bifurcation diagram where presumed unstable states exist that cannot be computed by this procedure. As the solutal Rayleigh number is varied, multiple steady states, time-periodic states, and quasiperiodic states may occur. This case is compared to the simpler case of thermosolutal convection with linear vertical gradients and stress-free boundaries, for which a rather complete numerical treatment is possible through the use of a simple spectral representation of the nonlinear solution. Retaining a finite number of terms in the expansion results in a set of coupled nonlinear algebraic equations for the Fourier coefficients, which is solved by a quasi-Newton method. The linear stability of the nonlinear solutions is also determined from a numerical computation of the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix. The resulting bifurcation diagram shows qualitative similarity to the bifurcation diagram computed for the solidification system.

    Notes: We present a diffuse-interface treatment of the internal gravity waves which have been observed experimentally by Berg et al. in xenon near its thermodynamic critical point. The results are compared with theoretical predictions by Berg et al. that were obtained using separate models above and below the critical temperature Tc. The diffuse-interface model applies both above and below Tc, and is formulated by using the density as an order parameter. The diffuse interface is represented as a transition zone of rapid but smooth density variation in the model, and density gradients appear in a capillary tensor, or Korteweg stress term, in the momentum equation. We obtain static density profiles, compute internal wave frequencies and compare with the experimental data and theoretical results of Berg et al. both above and below the critical temperature. The results reveal a singularity in the diffuse-interface model in the limit of incompressible perturbations.
