Description / Table of Contents: Summary A brief discussion of the “constant stretch history” concept introduced by Noll, and of the “perpetual rheological history” concept introduced by Oldroyd, shows that these are essentially equivalent. The physical meaning which is generally attached to the Deborah number implies that its value is zero for constant stretch history flows. These are a more restricted class than all steady flows, and thus a definition of the Deborah number is given, to be used in the analysis of steady flows, which fulfills the requirement of yielding a zero value when applied to a constant stretch history flow pattern.

Notes: Predictive equations for terminal velocities of liquid drops in Newtonian and non-Newtonian systems are reviewed. The wave theory analogy is extended to include liquid-liquid systems. Experimental data obtained with seven different systems are presented. The agreement with predictive equations is satisfactory. Interface rigidity was observed in all the systems investigated.

Notes: The general form of the equations describing a steady, two-dimensional flow of an incompressible liquid is reduced to a form containing only two parameters. The histories of stress and of deformation of a material element are written explicitly. A second-order, slow-flow approximation and a Maxwell type of constitutive equation are used to infer properties of the rheological behavior of viscoelastic liquids in such flows.

Notes: The dynamic transition of nematics in (slow) shear from flow-aligning to tumbling behaviour is here predicted by using the rigid rod-like molecular model together with an extension of the Maier-Saupe mean-field potential. Such an extension, already available in the literature with reference to equilibrium data, includes interactions of rank higher than the basic quadrupolar one considered by Maier and Saupe. The theoretical predictions are then compared with the few existing sets of dynamic data. Although an acceptable qualitative agreement is found, the theory generally overpredicts the value of the relevant ratio α3/α2 of Leslie coefficients.

Notes: The determination of single-chain properties for heterogeneous molecules such as a rigid-flexible block copolymer requires the use of solvents capable of reducing selective interactions involving the blocks and the diluent. Molecular dispersion is displayed by a two-block copolymer of benzoyl-terminated poly(p-benzamide) (poly(imino-1,4-phenyl-enecarbonyl) and anilino-terminated poly(m-phenyleneisophthalamide) in 96 wt.-% sulfuric acid. For a series of such copolymers, intrinsic viscosities were measured avoiding degradation effects due to H2SO4. The intrinsic viscosity ([η]) of the copolymers was found to decrease with increasing length of the flexible block, but [η] remained larger than the value corresponding to an equimolar blend of rigid and flexible homopolymers. These results are explained by theoretical considerations within the framework of the hydrodynamic behavior of single rodlike and single coiled macromolecules.

Notes: Acid phosphatase (E.C.3.1.3.2.) thermal deactivation at pH 3.77 has been investigated by monitoring the enzyme activity as a function of time in the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl phosphate. The experimental curves obtained show a two-slope behavior in a log (activity)versus-time plot, which indicates that deactivation occurs via a complex mechanism. From the dependence of the kinetic parameters on both deactivation and hydrolysis temperatures, it is inferred that the deactivation mechanism involves intermediate, temperature-dependent, less-active forms of the enzyme. This interpretation is confirmed by the results of additional tests in which the temperature was suddenly changed during the deactivation process.

Notes: Acid phosphatase (E.C. 3.1.3.2) undergoes complex thermal deactivation phenomena, as revealed by the two-slope pattern of the enzyme logarithmic-specific-activity versus time curves. The native enzyme first decays toward an equilibrium distribution of less, but still active, intermediate structures and these, in turn, undergo a final degradation to a completely inactive form. The effect of the experimental conditions at which the enzyme is kept during the deactivation process on the characteristics of these intermediate enzymatic structures has been investigated. The kinetic parameters of p-nitro-phenyl phosphate hydrolysis, as catalyzed by some of these intermediate forms, have been determined and the results compared to those obtained with the native enzyme.

Notes: Tests on acid phosphatase (E.G. 3.1.3.2) deactivation by urea have been performed at two pH values. Two conditions have been used: native enzyme operating batch-wise in dilute solution and stabilized enzyme in continuous flow ultrafiltration membrane reactor. Stabilization is achieved by confining the enzyme within a concentrated solution of a linear chain polymer that forms a polarization layer over the membrane. The results provide significant information on the kinetics and thermodynamics of the complex phenomena taking place during deactivation. Deactivation by urea is also compared with thermal deactivation.
