Notes: Summary The Young modulus dependence on thermal treatment and magnetization state was analysed on various metallic glasses. Propagation of standing magnetoelastic waves was used as an investigation technique. A simple model was elaborated to predict the magnetoelastic coupling. The explanation of the results was suggested on the basis of macroscopic and microscopic relaxation effects and is also revealed by the measurement of internal friction and magnetoelastic-coupling constant.

Notes: Summary The anisotropy induced by magnetic annealing in a transversal field is correlated with the Young modulus, the longitudinal magnetostriction and the magnetoelastic coupling coefficient. Subsequently it is shown that the value of the anisotropy deriving from directional short-range ordering,k DSRO, can be calculated in an original manner by means of the mentioned parameters. Thisk DSRO evaluation is in increasing agreement with its directly measured value, when the magnetic-annealing effects approach saturation. The magnetic heat treatment influences can be described by a small rise of the internal stress, in comparison with conventional annealing, and a large increase of longitudinal magnetostriction.

Notes: Interaction between acoustic field and electromagnetic field, in a magnetostrictive ferromagnetic material produces both transversal quasiacoustic waves (QACW) and quasielectromagnetic waves (QEMW) named hybrid waves. Properties of hybrid waves have been studied and their dependence on conductivity has been emphasized in the piezomagnetic case. To this end, the system of Maxwell's equations, Newton's law of force, and piezomagnetic state equations were solved for an infinite continuous medium. It is shown that for a particular conductivity value σc, the hybrid modes coincides in a mixed propagation mode we called MHWM. The dispersion relation, in the case of separate hybrid waves, as well as in the mixed mode MHWM, is discussed. The MHWM has a velocity Vc, which is independent of wave number k. Moreover we point out that (a) for very high σ, the QEMW velocity reaches a k-independent value while the QACW velocity falls to zero, (b) the behavior of σc(k), at constant Vc, is linear, (c) for σ≠σc, at constant σ, the QEMW velocity and QACW velocity behaviors versus k are nonmonotonics.

Notes: The study of the magnetoelastic waves as a function of temperature appears as a useful method to be able to investigate both the magnetization critical point (particularly in amorphous metals) and structural relaxation effects. Our experimental apparatus1,2 used to produce and pick up standing magnetoelastic waves in ferromagnetic samples was modified by building an anti-inductive furnace and a water cooling system. This allows us to perform measurements "on line'' on the wave amplitude A versus temperature in the range ∼30–400 °C. By slowly increasing the temperature, one observes that the amplitude A falls to zero when the Curie point Tc is reached. Only if the samples were properly preannealed, during subsequent heating or cooling, the same A values were measured at any fixed temperature. When the annealing is unaccomplished, the thermal cycles revealed in the "as-produced'' samples can be correlated with the structural relaxation. In 2826 Metglas, magnetic anisotropy abatement, large increase of the wave amplitude, and sensitive increment to Tc agree with each other and represent, in this study, the most important consequence of the structural relaxation.

Notes: The problem of coupling between mechanical shear waves and electromagnetic waves propagating in magnetostrictive materials has been stressed. The system of the acoustic field equations and the Maxwell ones has been combined with the piezomagnetic constitutive relations to obtain z-propagating x-polarized transversal standing wave characterized both by particle displacement, Ux(z,t), and magnetic field, Hx(z,t). Attention has been paid on the separation of the purely acoustic wave from the hybrid one to the scope to evaluate their difference in velocity D. Generally, the latter is very small (1/105) but it cannot be neglected in new technological materials exhibiting low magnetoelastic coupling coefficients. The difference D has been theoretically obtained for magnetoelastic waves generated in transversally isotropic samples versus the permeability and the magnetoelastic coupling coefficient. Moreover, it has been possible to check the electromagnetic disturbance behavior as a function of the bias field by using our experimental results.
