Notes: Abstract The Marine Pollution Monitoring System (MARPOLMON) constitutes a marine chemical component of the Global Environment Monitoring System (GEMS). The Programme covers all matters related to marine pollution research and associated monitoring activities required for the assessment of marine pollution. MARPOLMON constitutes the data-gathering activity, being directed to accurately determine levels of selected contaminants in several phases of the marine environment in various regions of the World Ocean. It is envisaged to utlize MARPOLMON generated data for the purposes of construction of mass-balances and making contamination and pollution assessments in regional and global contexts. Data gathering, reporting and exchange requires stringent control of the quality of the information retrieved, which in turn dictates the development and testing of standard methodology, its widespread adoption and intercomparison of methods and feedback-refinement of orogonal methods or hypotheses.

Notes: Abstract Information contained in the recent Review of the Health of the Oceans carried out by the UN Joint Group of Experts on Scientific Aspects of Marine Pollution (GESAMP) is used in formulating monitoring requirements together with different aims of monitoring defined within the framework of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The development is largely based on the concept of an interfaceflux model, which defines zones of interaction between oceanic processes and human activities. This is supplemented by consideration of biogeochemical cycles which describe the cycling of substances and may help elucidate specially important processes and fluxes. A definition of specific monitoring needs is obtained. Consideration is given separately to a series of waste or contaminant categories: sewage, organochlorines, petroleum, metals and radionuclides. Implications in relation to the design of an integrated monitoring scheme include: the need to take into account interactions between land, sea, and atmosphere; the desirability to combine monitoring type observations with scientific studies, e.g. for the determination of fluxes; the necessity to take into account the frequencey of occurrence and rate of natural processes.

Description: Figures 37 and 38 have been reduced from their original size for the purpose of scanning.
Description: During March/April 1976 the small-scale structure of the Antarctic Polar Front was observed in the Drake Passage. The observations were part of the International Southern Ocean Studies (ISOS) program called FDRAke 76. The purpose of the program was to obtain densely sampled measurements of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and chemical nutrients in the Polar Front Zone (PFZ) and pilot measurements of horizontal and vertical velocities in order to explain the above scalar variability. The PFZ is a region where Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters intermingle and presumably mix to affect the properties of Antarctic Intermediate Water. A report on the third leg of Cruise 107 of the R. V. THOMPSON is presented as well as a description of the measurements and a preliminary report of the data. A feature of interest is the pinching off of a northward meander of the circumpolar current system into a cyclonic ring of Antarctic Waters.
