    Description: Lower jaws (containing the teeth), eyes, and skin samples were collected from harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus) in the southeastern Barents Sea for the purpose of comparing age estimates obtained by 3 different methods, the traditional technique of counting growth layer groups (GLGs) in teeth and 2 novel approaches, aspartic acid racemization (AAR) in eye lens nuclei and telomere sequence analyses as a proxy for telomere length. A significant correlation between age estimates obtained using GLGs and AAR was found, whereas no correlation was found between GLGs and telomere length. An AAR rate (k Asp) of 0.00130/year ± 0.00005 SE and a D-enantiomer to L-enantiomer ratio at birth (D/L 0 value) of 0.01933 ± 0.00048 SE were estimated by regression of D/L ratios against GLG ages from 25 animals (12 selected teeth that had high readability and 13 known-aged animals). AAR could prove to be useful, particularly for ageing older animals in species such as harp seals where difficulties in counting GLGs tend to increase with age. Age estimation by telomere length did not show any correlation with GLG ages and is not recommended for harp seals.

    Notes: Summary Least square criterion has been introduced to specify the order of isostatic compensation of mountains. The hydrostatic stability of the mountains is of basic significance in plate tectonics. However different concepts of isostasy differ in the evaluation of its order. An elegant and rapid technique is developed which extends the symmetric matrix method of root estimation byNegi andGarde [1]3) to provide a stability test through the mathematical expectation of the root increment.     Notes: Abstract Cytokines and their related enzyme pathways may play a part in the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). We have therefore studied the activity of the enzyme 2′–5′ oligoadenylate synthetase (which is induced by both interferon and the tumour necrosis factors) in circulating mononuclear cells from 40 subjects with IDDM and 32 healthy control subjects. There was no difference in mean basal enzyme activity between the two groups. A polymorphism of the 2′–5′ oligoadenylate synthetase gene, not previously described, was found using the restriction enzymeBam HI. There was no association of 2′–5′ oligoadenylate synthetase genotypes with IDDM, but there was a significant correlation between basal 2′–5′ oligoadenylate synthetase activity and 2′–5′ oligoadenylate synthetase genotypes. Significantly higher mean basal levels of 2′–5′ oligoadenylate synthetase activity were associated with HLA-DQA 4.6 phenotype (determined using the restriction enzymeTaq 1 and a DQA probe) and HLA-DR3 (determined serologically), whereas significantly lower mean levels of enzyme activity were associated with HLA-DQA 5.5 and HLA-DR7, in both IDDM and control subjects. An analysis of variance confirmed that these associations were independent 2′–5′ oligoadenylate synthetase genotype. Likewise, a significantly higher mean level of enzyme activity was associated with the heterozygous 1/3 insulin-related genotype in the IDDM subjects only. This study therefore suggests that the possession of certainHLA haplotypes might be associated with differing levels of basal 2′–5′ oligoadenylate synthetase activity.

    Notes: The information theory approach is used to study molecular-scale density fluctuations and solvation of hard-core molecules in a condensed polymeric system, supported by extensive computer simulations. In contrast to simple liquids, it is found that the bond connectivity in polymers leads to non-Gaussian density fluctuations in molecular volumes. We define "renormalized" polymers with a reduced number of monomers of increased effective size. This reduces correlations between monomers and simplifies the effective density fluctuations. Chemical potentials of hard-core solutes in polyethylene can then be calculated accurately using information theory. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated temperature dependence of hydrophobic hydration and molecular-scale density fluctuations in an isotropic single-site model of water originally devised by Head-Gordon and Stillinger [J. Chem. Phys. 98, 3313 (1993)] using Monte Carlo simulations. Our isotropic model of water, HGS water, has the same oxygen–oxygen radial distribution function as that of the simple point charge (SPC) water at room temperature and water density. For HGS water, we find that non-Gaussian occupancy fluctuations lead to cavity formation probabilities that are considerably lower than in SPC water. Wetting of a hard-sphere solute by HGS water is also found to be significantly greater than that by SPC water. These observations can be understood in terms of differences in Hamiltonians of the two water models. Despite these differences in the details of hydration, small hydrophobic solutes display many of the well-known thermodynamic finger prints of hydrophobic hydration once the variation of density with temperature, ρ(T), along the saturation curve of real liquid water is followed for HGS water. For the hydration of small solutes, the "entropy convergence" is observed at temperatures of (approximate)400 K. These observations emphasize that the phase behavior of liquid water contains crucial information regarding thermodynamics of solvation phenomena. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
