Notes: [Auszug] FOR some years I have employed a high-pressure spark-gap, such as that described by me in the Phil. Mag. for August, 1902, in connection with a Tesla inductive system, and I have experienced considerable trouble arising from the erosion of the spark balls and their supports. They soon become ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE earliest practical gas engine appears to be unknown to the leading writers on internal combustion engines. I think that it may be a matter of interest to those who are antiquarians in their subject—as Maxwell used to say—to know that a working gas engine was shown in Cambridge in the year ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE tuning-fork, when used for making time traces in chronographic work, is usually made to vibrate, by bowing with a violin bow, or by percussion, or by rapidly removing a metal block from between the two prongs, or by an electromagnet the circuit of which is interrupted by the fork itself. ...

Notes: [Auszug] MR. C. T. WHITMELL (NATURE, September 1, p. 424) describes a method of producing coloured patches by means of a rotating disc, furnished with a ring of holes. It will be found that the phenomenon can also be produced by intermittent reflection. In the year 1881 I described in NATURE (vol. xxiv. ...

Notes: [Auszug] DURING a visit to Adelaide in December last year, I was asked to suggest some sort of apparatus whereby? ertz wave disturbances might be observed. The result may perhaps be of some interest at the present time. The spark at the oscillator was small, as only a small induction coil was available. ...

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the influence of predation by a planktivorous fish on zooplankton assemblages within experimental billabongs. Results suggest that the presence of a small planktivorous fish in experimental billabongs had only a small influence on the structure of zooplankton assemblages and densities of rotifers. Microcrustacean populations were dominated by juveniles, however there were greater numbers of juveniles when the planktivorous fish were present.

Notes: Abstract In many long-term, intensive experimental and field studies there often arises a need to trade off taxonomic resolution for ecological answers. Compounding this problem is a taxonomic impediment, the lack of experienced taxonomists capable of processing large numbers of samples to species resolution, especially in groups such as the Rotifera. This paper has two aims: (1) To investigate the level of taxonomic resolution required to determine the impact of a disturbance, in the form of a flood event; (2) to compare the impact of different taxonomic resolutions in assessing biodiversity. Results suggest both family and generic resolution can be used to determine the impact of a flood event and that these levels have some applicability to biodiversity studies. Relatively inexperienced taxonomists who can identify the common rotifers to generic level, can be relied upon to detect disturbance to community structure but their data become unreliable when assessing biodiversity.

Notes: A karyotype analysis of a diploid inbred line of Petunia hybrida stained with aceto-orcein is given. Five of the seven pairs of chromosomes can be identified by their relative lengths and arm ratios. The two remaining pairs stained with quinacrine show different fluorescence patterns.

Notes: Abstract An improved technique, viz., maceration with cellulase and pectinase, was applied in order to obtain chromosome preparations of botanical material suitable for fluorescence microscopy. The application of this method to Petunia hybrida allows the individual distinction of all chromosomes in mitosis. The following three criteria are required for this distinetion: the centromere index, the relative length, and the fluorescence intensity pattern after staining with Quinacrine. A standard karyogram is drawn up to render possible a comparison with other Petunia material.

Notes: Abstract Data on 3n×2n and 2n×3n crosses as a source of trisomics inPetunia are given. The delayed germination and retarded growth ofPetunia trisomics, in comparison with diploids, is mentioned. The application of recent fluorescence staining techniques to enzymatically macerated roottips made it possible to distinguish the seven chromosome pairs ofPetunia hybrida. With the aid of the standard karyogram, a number of primary trisomics could be identified. The origin of two primary trisomics is discussed. With these trisomics, some genetic factors, placed in linkage groups, have been localized on one of the chromosomes. This first localization concerns the linkage group, containing the geneUn (=Undulata) for flower shape. In a primary trisomic with the undulate flower shape, chromosome V proved to be present in triplicate. From the deviating ratios for the undulata character in crosses with this trisomic, it was concluded that the location of the linkage group containing the geneUn is on chromosome V.
