Notes: [Auszug] Jupiter's aurora is the most powerful in the Solar System. It is powered largely by energy extracted from planetary rotation, although there seems also to be a contribution from the solar wind. This contrasts with Earth's aurora, which is generated through the interaction of the solar wind with ...

Notes: The processing factors, that could affect the inhibitory activity of onion extractives against the spores of Aspergillus parasiticus have been evaluated. The lachrymatory factor (thiopropanal-S-oxide) had maximal inhibitory activity. The survival of A. parasiticus spores depended upon the inhibitor concentration and the time of exposure of the spores to the onion inhibitors. Germinated spores showed more susceptibility to the inhibitors. The inhibitory effect of onion compounds was lost by heating, freeze-drying, dehydration, aeration and agitation, and prolonged storage.

Notes: Various extractives of onion were tested for their inhibitory activity towards the growth of the aflatoxin-producing fungi, Aspergillus flavas and A. parasiticus. Ether extract and lachrymatory factor (LF), which has been earlier identified as thiopropanal-s-oxide, were found to have potent antifungal activity. Steam-distilled onion oil, which is devoid of LF, was not as potent as ether extract and LF. Its major component, dipropyldisulfide was ineffective as a fungal inhibitor. Ethyl acetate extract containing phenolics was also ineffective. Exposure of onions to gamma-irradiation at a sprout-inhibiting dose (6 krad) did not alter the inhibitory potency of the onion extractives which, however, appeared to be heat-labile.

Notes: Aflatoxin production was observed in the 2 kg lots of peanuts and corn that were stored for 90 days at ambient temperature (28–30°C) and a relative humidity of 100% after infecting with the spores of aflatoxin producing strain Aspergillus parasiticus NRRL 3145. Treatment of the samples with an aqueous solution of 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid prevented aflatoxin formation in both the commodities, whereas, the untreated lots supported aflatoxin formation.

Notes: Abstract The shoot apices of ten groundnut interspecific hybrids, showing peanut stripe virus symptoms were used as explants. Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1 mg dm-3 each of naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and benzylaminopurine (BAP) supported maximum callusing of the hybrids J 11 × Arachis sp. PI 30008 as well as J 11 × A. sp. Manfredi # 5 (86.3 and 82.6 %, respectively). On MS medium with 3.5 mg dm-3 NAA and 0.2 mg dm-3 BAP, the meristems of J 11 × A. stenosperma as well as J 11 × A. otavioi gave good response (79.7 and 77.2 %). The regeneration frequencies ranged from 16.7 to 76.9 % and was more than 30 % in all hybrids except for J 11 × PI 30085. Shoots (5 cm) regenerated from the virus-free (ELISA tested) calli rooted well (60 – 80 %) on MS basal medium supplemented with 0.4 % activated charcoal and 200 mg dm-3 casein hydrolysate. In addition, long shoots which failed to produce roots, when transferred to soil during rainy season and protected from direct sun got established.

Notes: Summary A quasi-geostrophic, linear, barochnic, diabatic model, which also includes the surface friction and the orography is utilized for identifying the various physical processes responsible for the westward motion of monsoon depression in the lower troposphere. For this purpose, the geopotential, resembling the mean observed state of a monsoon depression, is prescribed by analytical functions at an initial time. w is obtained as the analytic solution of the omega equation for the various physical processes and it is compared with the observed distributions. The role of orography in inducing the westward motion to the wave is investigated and found to be most important in the boundary layer. The Laplacian of thermal advection and the differential vorticity advection are the other two important physical processes responsible for the movement of wave in the westward direction in the boundary layer. The necessity for the vertical transport of cyclonic vorticity ahead of monsoon depression from the boundary layer to the upper layer is inferred from the results. The physical processes responsible for the northward motion of the wave are also identified.
