    Notes: Summary It is quite easy to estimate the variance-covariance (VCV) matrix for single session surveys or local networks, but difficult where these local networks are combined together to form a regional network. Our main aim is to develop an appropriate VCV model to combine all the different types of networks, either global, regional or local. By careful estimation and combination of the individual VCVs of the local networks, we can form a unique VCV for local, regional and global networks. Different techniques are used to derive appropriate models for the variancecovariance components of the Global Positioning System (GPS) networks. The VCV models were estimated using homogeneous and heterogeneous data. The variance-covariance components are empirically derived using (a) the covariance of the observations of homogeneous data, (b) a combination of the covariance of the observationsP −1 and the covariance of the signal componentsC ss (for either homogeneous and/or heterogeneous data), (c) only the variances are used to determine the variancecovariance, their covariances being zeros. We compare the solutions of the VCV developed for homogeneous and/or heterogeneous data with other developed VCVs. It was observed that the derived VCV model for the combined homogeneous and/or heterogeneous data of case (b) gives the best estimates in all cases.

    Notes: Abstract The estimated parameters from a Gauss-Markov model have varying sensitivity to the individual observations included in the model. Similarly, the redundancy contribution (number) of any observation is associated differently to all the other observations in the model. Evaluation of the sensitivity of parameters to observations, and the sensitivity of the redundancy contribution of one observation to the others are useful to gain more insight into Gauss-Markov models. Such analysis has found practical applications in survey network design and in multiple outlier detections. This paper presents some quantitative sensitivity measures for general Gauss-Markov models. The application of the concept in surveying network design is also discussed.

A new technique is proposed which estimates the number of outliers in a network by evaluating the redundancy contributions of the detected observations. In this way, a number of potential outliers can be identified and eliminated in each iteration of an adjustment. This leads to higher efficiency in data snooping of geodetic networks. The technique is illustrated with some numerical examples.

    Notes: Summary 1. The effect of a mixed carbon source on pyruvic acid formation was studied using acetate and glucose as substrates. 2. Within the same experimental period the mat weights, when acetate was the sole substrate, did not pass through a maximum value. 3. When acetate and glucose were incorporated into the same medium, or when only glucose was used, maximum pyruvic acid values were obtained on the 7th day. In the case of acetate a maximum value was not found until the 15th day.
