Notizen: Abstract Transient natural convection in horizontal cylinders with wall temperature decreasing at a constant rate is approached by a numerical method. Numerical solutions are obtained for Pr=0.7, 10, 100 and a range of modified Grashof numbers Gra=103 ∼ 109. The time-dependent flow and temperature fields, local and overall heat transfer rates are presented. For quasi-steady state, a generalized correlation equation for Nusselt number valid for Pr ⩾0.7 and GrPr 〈 107 is developed.

Notizen: Abstract The problem of thermal entry heat transfer for Hartmann flow in parallel-plate channels with uniform but unequal wall temperatures considering viscous dissipation, Joule heating and axial conduction effects is approached by the eigenfunction expansion method. The series expansion coefficients for the nonorthogonal eigenfunctions are obtained by using a method for nonorthogonal series described by Kantorovich and Krylov [21]. Numerical results are obtained for the case with entrance condition parameter θo=1 and open circuit condition K=1. The parametric values of Ha=0, 2, 6, 10 and Br=0, −1 are considered for Hartmann and Brinkman numbers, respectively.

Notizen: Abstract A secondary hydroxyl group containing epoxy resin was reacted and cross-linked with polyurethane (PU). This PU-cross-linked epoxy resin was cured with a tertiary amine and the viscosity and dynamic mechanical properties were determined by a cone-and-plate rheometer. A dual Arrhenius viscosity model was modified to predict the viscosity profile with time before gelation during non-isothermal curing, and the calculated values coincided with the experimental data. The activation energy of this system (NCO/OH ratio=30 mol%) calculated by the modified model was 13kcal mol−1 for the initial region, and 16.8 kcal mol−1 for the final region. After gelation, the dynamic complex modulus was correlated to the reaction kinetics according to the rubber elasticity theory, and the activation energy calculated was 5.2 kcal mol−1. These activation energies are all lower than those of the unmodified epoxy resin system. Consequently, the reaction rate of the PU-cross-linked epoxide system was less affected by temperature than that of the unmodified epoxide system. It was also found that the rate of increase of viscosity and dynamic moduli decreased with increasing PU content. The gelling point was estimated by rheological measurements.

Notizen: Abstract Epoxy resin was cured with a tertiary amine. The viscosity and dynamic mechanical properties during the curing reaction were measured by a cone-and-plate rheometer. A dual Arrhenius viscosity model was modified to predict the viscosity profile before gelation during the non-isothermal curing. The viscosity profile coincided with the experimental data. The activation energy of this system calculated using the modified model was 19.8 kcal mol−1 for the first region, and 17.3 kcal mol−1 for the second region. After gelation, the dynamic complex modulus was related to the reaction kinetics according to the rubber elasticity theory, and the activation energy was 15.3 kcal mol−1. Furthermore, the gelling point can be estimated from the rheological measurements.

Notizen: Abstract Linear stability theory is used to investigate the onset of longitudinal vortices in laminar boundary layers along horizontal semi-infinite flat plates heated or cooled isothermally from below by considering the density inversion effect for water using a cubic temperature-density relationship. The analysis employs non-parallel flow model incorporating the variation of the basic flow and temperature fields with the streamwise coordinate as well as the transverse velocity component in the disturbance equations. Numerical results for the critical Grashof number Gr L * =Gr X * /Re X〈 Emphasis〉/3/2 are presented for thermal conditions corresponding to −0.5≤λ 1≤−2.0 and −0.8≤λ 2≤1.2.

Notizen: Abstract An analysis is made of steady-state unsymmetric liquid solidification of forced laminar flow in a parallel-plate channel with different uniform external convection coolings at the upper and lower plates, respectively. The classical Graetz type analysis is made by using the confluent hypergoemetric function. The case of one plate with perfect insulation and the other plate with a uniform external convection cooling is studied in detail. Numerical results are obtained for liquid solidification-free length, ice layer thickness, pressure drop, bulk temperature, heat transfer rate and local Nusselt number for Bi 1=0, Bi 2=1, 2, 10, 100, ε=1 ∼ 10, Pr=13.2 and k 1/k s=0.25 using 10 eigenvalues. The configuration and thermal conditions may be encountered, for example, in heat exchangers using cryogenics and freezing of ice sheets on northern rivers and lakes.

Notizen: Abstract A linear stability analysis is used to study the conditions marking the onset of secondary flow in the form of longitudinal vortices for plane Poiseuille flow of water in the thermal entrance region of a horizontal parallel-plate channel by a numerical method. The water temperature range under consideration is 0∼30°C and the maximum density effect at 4°C is of primary interest. The basic flow solution for temperature includes axial heat conduction effect and the entrance temperature is taken to be uniform at far upstream location jackie=−∞ to allow for the upstream heat penetration through thermal entrance jackie=0. Numerical results for critical Rayleigh number are obtained for Peclet numbers 1, 10, 50 and thermal condition parameters (λ 1, λ 2) in the range of −2.0≤λ 1≤−0.5 and −1.0≤λ 2≤1.4. The analysis is motivated by a desire to determine the free convection effect on freezing or thawing in channel flow of water.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of free convection on thermal entrance region problem and liquid solidification-free zone in a convectively-cooled horizontal square channel are studied by numerical method for steady-state fully developed laminar conditions using the large Prandtl number assumption. The Rayleigh number effects on the heat transfer results and the length of liquid solidification-free zone are investigated for Biot number of 2 and 20. It is concluded that the free convection effects should be included in the analysis of ice formation in a convectively-cooled pipe or channel when the Rayleigh number is greater than say 104.

Notizen: Abstract A numerical solution using a combination of boundary vorticity method and line iterative relaxation method is presented for the hydrodynamically and thermally fully developed combined free and forced laminar convection with upward flow in inclined tubes subjected to the thermal boundary conditions of axially uniform wall heat flux and peripherally uniform wall temperature at any axial position. The numerical solution converges up to a reasonably high value of the characteristic parameter where an asymptotic behaviour for flow and heat transfer resultsfalready appears, and further results can be obtained by a linear extrapolation. The tube inclination angle or body-force orientation effects on flow and heat transfer characteristics are clarified for upward laminar flow configuration, and show that in high Rayleigh number regime the tube orientation effect has considerable influence on the results in the neighborhood of horizontal direction. Typical graphical results for flow and heat transfer are presented, mainly to illustrate the effects of Rayleigh number and tube inclination. The numerical results show that the perturbation method is invalid for the present problem.
