Notes: Abstract In the search for suitable materials to be used as anode supports in the periodic current reversal refining process this work covers the study of austenitic AISI 304 stainless steel. Experimental results show that the resistance of this steel to the aggressive action of the refining electrolyte is good at the working temperature of 60°C since no corrosion was detected after 24 h of electrolysis. The periodic polarization of this material results in a progressive passivation which was observed by operating under different initial surface conditions and by detecting remnant anodic currents which gradually decreased with time. For time ratios lower than twenty, a build up of metallic copper deposit on the steel part of the mixed anode occurred whatever the current density used.

Notes: Abstract The experimental hysteretic behavior of the transport critical current observed in ceramic Y-Ba-Cu-O and (Bi-Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O, as well as thin film Y-Ba-Cu-O, are presented. The data are analyzed semiqualitatively. The results show certain similarities among the ceramic samples and the films.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the photochromic and thermochromic behavior of amorphous MoO3 films prepared by thermal evaporation of MoO3 powder on glass and glass/CdS substrates. We used the cadmium sulfide as a carrier charge injector to produce higher color center concentrations in the MoO3 film. The semiconductor CdS (cadmium sulfide) film was synthesized using the chemical bath deposition technique. The glass/MoO3 and glass/CdS/MoO3 films were subjected to tungsten lamp (100 W) exposure times of 45 to 180 min to study the photochromic sensitivity of the films. To study the thermochromic properties, samples were thermally annealed at temperatures ranging from 100 to 250 °C during 2 h. X-ray diffraction studies show that the CdS films were polycrystalline, and the oxide films were amorphous. Optical absorption measurements showed the presence of an absorption band centered around 850 nm due to the formation of color centers. Concentrations of these were calculated using the Smakula equation. Results indicate that the addition of CdS films enhances the photochromic and thermochromic properties of MoO3. Photochromism is more effective than thermochromism in generating color centers when using CdS as a charge carrier.

Notes: Abstract A {2 21} twin lamella in undoped LEC InP was studied by means of a diluted sirtl mixture applied with light (DSL) photoetching and microRaman spectroscopy. This study revealed that there was defect segregation at the twin boundary. This boundary-defect-depletion area would result in an enhanced photocarrier lifetime and a stress relaxation that extends a few micrometres away the boundary. From these results, it appears that the formation of this twin was strongly influenced by stoichiometry fluctuations during growth; these fluctuations were revealed by both selective photoetching and by microRaman scanning spectroscopy.

Notes: Abstract Polarization distribution of calcium-modified lead titanate ceramics with a nominal composition of Pb0.76Ca0.24(Co0.5W0.5)0.05Ti0.95O3 was measured from the thermocurrents stimulated in these materials by a sinusoidal thermal wave. The polarization distribution was obtained and related to the development of defects in the material during processing. The deviation in the perovskite composition and the formation of segregated phases at the grain boundaries have been studied using the techniques of energy dispersion X-ray analysis, scanning electron microscopy and backscattering electron analysis.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the preparation of Ni−Zn and Ni−Co−Zn coatings by electrodeposition on a mild steel substrate. After treatment in a KOH solution to leach out part of the zinc, the materials were evaluated as cathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline solutions. The materials were found to have high surface areas and low Tafel slopes. Overpotentials at current densities of technological interest are significantly lower than those of the traditional materials used in water electrolysis.

Notes: Abstract The influence of the foreign metal adatoms deposited at underpotentials on the oxidation of glyoxalate on platinum was studied in alkaline medium. Pronounced catalytic effects caused by underpotential submonolayers of Pb, Tl, Cd, Cu and Cr were observed. The enhancement of the oxidation processes by underpotential submonolayers has been interpreted according to the bifunctional theory of the electrocatalysis.

Notes: Abstract The pitting corrosion of copper in alkaline solutions in the presence of benzotriazole (BTA) was investigated. The presence of BTA shifts the breakdown (E b) and the repassivating (E p) potentials positively with respect to the blanks. However, the shift ofE p becomes smaller than that ofE b, particularly at pH9 and 11. Pitting corrosion involves the formation of crystallographic pits. The kinetics of the process fits a nucleation and growth mechanism involving instantaneous nucleation and 3D growth under charge transfer control. The spatial distribution of pits indicates that there is no marked influence of a pit on the nucleation and growth of other pits.

Notes: Abstract The voltammetric formation and potentiostatic growth of anodic films on Ru/Pt electrodes in HClO4 and HCl solutions were studied by single negative potential sweeps and cathodic charging curves in the potential range from −0.25 to 1.1 V vs SCE. The growth of the anodic layer proceeds through the formation of two layers of different reduction reversibility. At potentials below 500 mV, the layer more reversibly reduced, grows slowly to a maximum coverage equivalent to one oxygen monolayer. The thicker, and more stable, layer increases with holding time to a maximum of about three oxygen monolayers during the period of time studied (7 h). At holding potentials above 500 mV, the reduction charge of the anodic layer reaches a constant value after polarization for 1 h. Growth starts with formation of two layers which, with time, become a single layer which is hardly reducible. The results suggest the eventual formation of anhydrous RuO2, In HCl solutions, Cl− adsorption inhibits the formation of the anodic layer, decreasing its growth rate but reaching no limiting thickness for 7 h. At holding potentials below 650 mV vs SCE, only a single layer is formed with slight structural changes. At potentials above 650 mV, the initially homogeneous film converts with holding time into a bilayer where the outer layer becomes hardly reducible. This layer is assumed to be a stable anionic hydroxy species (RuCl5OH2−) which dissolves as Ru2O2Cl6(H2O)2−. In HClO4 and HCl the layer growth follows a direct logarithmic law.

Notes: Abstract A resistive grid model was used to study the current and ohmic overpotential distributions along the surface of lead-acid battery electrodes. Analyses were made under two different regimes: the initial behaviour at high current densities and the response with time at low current densities. At high discharge currents the theoretical results show that the geometry of the electrodes and the position of the lug play the most important role in controlling the magnitude of ohmic losses. The best geometry is a square grid with the lug positioned at the upper centre of the electrode. At low discharge currents the model was used to follow the current distribution along the electrode surface as a function of time. In this last study the appearance, for long discharge times, of short-circuited concentration microcells localized in certain regions of the electrode surface was noted. The other regions of the electrode supply the external discharge current and the excess current necessary to charge the internal microcell.
