    Description: Closed form and finite element analyses are presented for axial direction and transverse direction dimensional stability of skin/stringer panels. Several sensitivity studies are presented to illustrate the influence of various design parameters on the dimensional stability of these panels. Panel geometry, material properties (stiffness and coefficient of thermal expansion), restraint conditions and local details, such as resin fillets, all combine to influence dimensional stability, residual and assembly forces.

    Description: The Tether Dynamics Simulation Workshop focused on the efforts of the Tether Applications Simulation Working Group (TASWG) to catalog various dynamics simulations, document environmental models, and provide a set of verified simulation results. The workshop consisted of reports on these activities and the presentation of papers on current dynamics topics of general interest. This paper documents the work performed at the Workshop and the results and recommendations for further work.

    Description: A case is made for an electrodynamic tether scientific platform to be put into orbit around Jupiter as a follow-on to the present series of earth-based Tethered Satellite System (TSS) experiments. Preliminary system trades are made to bound the amount of power (assuming 100 percent plasma contactor efficiency) that can be obtained from the orbiting Jovian tether. With magnetic field strengths of roughly 4 to 7 Gauss, power levels of the order of 100 kilowatts can be obtained with a thin 500 km long tether. This should suffice to power a Jovian scientific experiment package. The electrodynamic tether also affords a loitering capability as it can be operated as a thruster in addition to a power generator. Further study and research is needed to characterize the Jovian tether as to its electrodynamic and dynamic performance potential. Hollow cathode plasma contactor operation needs to be verified in near earth space.

    Description: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data presented here are the first on an epitaxial thin film of a mercury cuprate superconductor, the first in which signals from the superconducting phase dominate all the core level spectra, and the first to exhibit a clear Fermi edge in the valence band region. Mercury is found to be in a single chemical state, contrary to reports based on sintered polycrystalline pellets.

    Description: The Skylab attitude and pointing control system (APCS) requirements are briefly reviewed and the way in which they became altered during the prelaunch phase of development is noted. The actual flight mission (including mission alterations during flight) is described. The serious hardware failures that occurred, beginning during ascent through the atmosphere, also are described. The APCS's ability to overcome these failures and meet mission changes are presented. The large around-the-clock support effort on the ground is discussed. Salient design points and software flexibility that should afford pertinent experience for future spacecraft attitude and pointing control system designs are included.

    Description: A system for tethering one orbiting space vehicle to another was designed so that a tetherline between the vehicles is controlled by a motorized reel which in turn is controlled to deploy, retrieve, or maintain a constant line length while effecting a stabilizing influence on the line. This is accomplished by applying a tension to the line which takes into account the instantaneous length of the line, rate of change of the length of the line, and certain constants which vary depending upon the mode of operation, deployment, retrieval, or station keeping.

    Description: A tethered subsatellite deployed along the local vertical is in stable equilibrium. This applies equally to subsatellites deployed in the direction towards the earth from the main spacecraft or away from the earth. Momentary perturbations from this stable equilibrium will result in a swinging motion, which decays very slowly if passive means are relied upon to provide damping. A control law is described which actively damps the swinging motion by employing a reel, or other mechanism, to apply appropriate tension as a function of tetherline length, rate of change of length, and desired length. The same control law is shown to be useful for deployment and retrieval of tethered subsatellites in addition to damping to steady state.

    Description: Space-platform energy-storage and attitude-stabilization system utilizes variable moment of inertia of two masses attached to ends of retractable cable. System would be brought to its initial operating speed by gravity-gradient pumping. When fully developed, concept could be part of an orbiting solar-energy collection system. Energy would be temporarily stored in system then transmitted to Earth by microwaves or other method.

    Description: In 1967 a paper at the AIAA Guidance, Control and Flight Dynamics Conference in Huntsville, Ala. presented for the first time the prot)osed SKYLAB Attitude and Pointing Control System (APCS) The system requirements, Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) configuration, control philosophy, and operational modes were presented and the APCS described. The Initial mission and system design requirements changed during the period of time before the SKYLAB was launched. This paper will review the Initial and final APCS requirements and goals and their relationship. The actual flight mission (and Its alterations during the flight) and known achieved APCS performance will then be presented. SKYLAB was a tremendous success in furthering man's scientific knowledge; but perhaps SKYLAB will be remembered more for the anomalies and the efforts undertaken to solve them. On May 14, 1973, the unmanned SKYLAB Orbital Workshop (OWS) was launched from Cape Kennedy. Serious hardware failures began to occur during ascent through the atmosphere and their spectre continued to haunt both the astronauts and their ground based support team. Nor were these the only surprises affecting the design and operation of the APCS. Mission requirements for pointing to various stellar targets and to nadir for earth resources experiments were added after the hardware was designed. The chance appearance of comet Kohoutek during the SKYLAB operational life-time caused NASA to add comet observation to the mission requirements and to adjust the time when the third crew would man the SKYLAB. The development of new procedures and software for the opportunity to observe this visitor to our solar system is described.
