Notizen: The rheological and thermokinetic aspects of the cure of epoxy based composite laminates are analyzed by means of a computer program developed using the heat transfer and heat generating characteristics of a polymerizable system. In particular, the temperature and degree of cure influence on the resin viscosity have been first considered, then the temperature profiles, calculated according to an appropriate kinetic and heat transfer modeling, have been used to predict the corresponding viscosity profiles. Molecular and thermocalorimetric parameters are used for the prediction of the theoretical chemorheological behavior. Commercial epoxy systems commonly used in the preparation of carbon fiber laminates have been characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic viscosity measurements and the results are compared with the theoretically predicted values.

Notizen: The chain orientation, induced by hot drawing, decreases the sorption capacity of polystyrene due to the tighter packing of macromolecules in the oriented material. Density measurements and decay of birefringence indicate that the loss of orientation Is a much more rapid phenomenon than the thermal shrinkage of the polymer.

Notizen: Thermotropic liquid crystal polymers have been modeled as an array of highly ordered polyhedric nematic domains immersed in a less-ordered, nearly isotropic matrix. A function has been defined that expresses the elastic moduli of drawn fibers as a function of orientation and geometry of the nematic domains. When such a material is hot drawn in extension, the domains orient and elongate to produce an orthotropic fibrous phase. Equations are proposed to relate the elastic moduli of the fibers to the draw ratio and the extrusion conditions. Upon annealing of the hot drawn fibers, shrinkage occurs. It is proposed that the shrinkage is the result of a physical transformation from the fibrous state back to the nematic domain structure present before extrusion and drawing. The Avrami equation is used to describe the nucleation and growth processes controlling the shrinkage at constant annealing temperature. The model is shown to correlate experimental data on the elastic properties and the shrinkage of hot drawn PET/PHB60 liquid crystal polymer with the processing conditions.

Notizen: Blends of polycarbonate (PC) and poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-p-oxybenzoate) (PET/PHB60) were prepared by melt-blending. Physical and/or chemical interactions between the two phases of the system were studied by thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Rheological measurements in shear flow were carried out both in the low and high shear rate regions in the temperature range of the existence of the mesophase. At low liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) content, the blends showed flow curves similar to those of the unfilled PC, while at higher LCP percentages the rheological behavior of the pure LCP was resembled. Moreover, in the whole shear range, the viscosity values of such blends were in between those of the pure polymers. The influence of the addition of 10% LCP on the mechanical properties of the PC was investigated. Fiber-spinning was performed under different experimental conditions, and it was found that opportune drawing conditions are necessary to improve the modulus of the matrix. Morphological analyses of the pure LCP and of the blends were related to the rheological and mechanical behavior of these systems. While the LCP exhibited an elevated dimensional stability, the inclusion of the LCP in PC matrix did not improve the dimensional stability of the blends.

Notizen: The CO2 solubility in oriented and unoriented atactic polystyrene films has been investigated. Orientation does not change the nature of the sorption process; however, it decreases the level of solubility. Both the Langumir sorption term and the Henry's-law contribution are affected by orientation. The decrease of solubility is correlated with an increase of density due to orientation. A simple experiment has been described to evaluate the depression of the glass transition temperature of polystyrene containing dissolved carbon dioxide.

Notizen: Water transport in a polyketone terpolymer was analyzed performing both sorption and permeation experiments. Water vapor sorption tests were conducted at four temperatures (35, 45, 55, and 65°C) and at several activities. The analysis of sorption isotherms revealed the occurrence of water clustering. A reduction of the endothermicity of mixing as the amount of sorbed water increased was observed which is consistent with significant association of penetrant molecules in the polymer. Permeation experiments performed at 35°C at upstream pressures ranging from 4 to 25 Torr showed evidence of a reduction in water diffusivity as function of sorbed water concentration which is a typical indication of penetrant aggregation. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Blends of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) were prepared and characterized. The analysis of the glass transition temperature indicates no compatibility of the two polymers, which segregated into two distinct phases. The fracture strength of the blends can be explained on the basis of a constitutive model of spheres of PCL embedded in a PMMA matrix. The trend of water sorption confirms the hypothesis of phase segregation of PCL in the glassy matrix of PMMA.

Notizen: The demand for heat-stable and easily processable polymeric materials with good gasbarrier properties is becoming more and more important due to the advent of new technological applications in the field of food packaging. A renewed interest has arisen for a polyketone class of polymers, which seems to fulfill these requirements. Our attention has been focused on a polyketone terpolymer (0.93 : 0.07 : 1 ethylene/propylene/carbon monoxide) in order to determine the transport properties and to relate them to the polymer structure. Permeability tests have been performed at three different temperatures (25, 35, and 45°C) with three different gases (helium, oxygen, and carbon dioxide). Permeabilities, diffusivities, and solubilities have been evaluated. Their dependence on temperature was interpreted on the basis of permeation and diffusion apparent activation energies (Ep and Ed) and of heats of solution (ΔHs). The investigated polymer has been found to be rubbery at the test temperature (glass transition temperature is about 17°C), but the detected permeabilities are comparable to those of glassy polymers widely used for packaging applications. The experimentally determined diffusion coefficients have been related to the semicrystalline nature of the polymer and to the different dimensions of the gas adopted in the investigation. The gas-solubility coefficients determined from permeability measurements were related to the force constant of the gas molecules in the Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential field equation. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Blends of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)-poly(3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and poly(L-lactides) (PLLA) have been prepared by solvent casting. Compatibility, thermal behavior, morphology, and mechanical properties of systems with various compositions were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical measurement, tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and wide-angle X ray (WAXS). Glass transition temperature of solvent cast materials, detected by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), showed partial molecular interactions between PHBV and PLLA. Crystallinity of the PLLA phase slightly decreased with increasing amount of PHBV, confirming the partial dispersion of PLLA in the PHBV phase. Mechanical properties were analyzed with theoretical models able to predict the behavior of heterogeneous systems. Phase separation was confirmed by SEM observations. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Sorption of distilled water in a cellulose-based hydrogel is presented. The examined system is based on a mixture of sodium salt of carboxymethylcellulose and hydroxyethylcellulose, crosslinked with divinilsulphone. The effect of chemical composition, manufacturing procedures, as well as desiccation protocols on equilibrium water uptake was investigated. Experimental results were interpreted in terms of crosslinking density, presence of ionic groups on the backbone, as well as macroscopic sample morphology detected by electron scanning microscopy. The reported results evidence the possibility to bias the process parameters in order to obtain hydrogels characterized by the desired water sorption levels. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
