Notes: SUMMARY– 392 samples of precooked frozen shrimp from two Chilean manufacturers, A and B, were quantitatively examined for the presence of Staphylococcus aureus by direct plating on Difco mannitol salt agar (MSA, 10% NaCI). 140 samples (35.7%) were found to contain Staphylococci but only half of these had counts of over 100,82.4% remaining within the acceptable limit. Frozen shrimps are prone to contamination by Staphylococcus during processing, especially if hand-processed, but these results show that it is possible to obtain a good-quality product when stringent sanitary measures are observed. MSA was compared with Baird Parker's egg yolk medium (BPM) by plating simultaneously on it 141 samples from manufacturer B; BPM detected S. aureus in a smaller number of samples (7.8%), and gave rise to fewer colonies than MSA. BPM seemed to be inhibitory even to some Staphylococcus strains, i.e., it is unsuitable for use in these frozen foods. From 2 other manufacturers, C and D, 80 samples of frozen shrimp, together with 60 nasal swab samples from food handlers were plated to investigate some cultural characteristics of S. aureus. 57 strains of this organism were obtained, 41 belonging to shrimp samples and 16 to nasal carriers from both manufacturers. The strains were isolated and, when tested by anaerobic fermentation of mannitol, deep growth in cysteine agar, catalase and coagulase reactions, all gave positive tests. Phosphatase and DNase reactions were less constant. All the strains with 1 exception were sensitive to 8 antibiotics tested. Thus, the general properties ascribed to S. aureus species appear unaltered in frozen shrimps. 28 strains (49.1%) could be typified with the set of 21 international phages, most of them belonging to group III; only in manufacturer D strains coming from food and food handlers were phage type related. In manufacturer C most strains were untypable.

Notes: Abstract Determination of the critical thermal maxima and upper lethal temperatures for Acartia tonsa Dana and A. clausi Giesbrecht revealed the relative temperature tolerance of the two species. A. tonsa exhibited a wider range of acclimation temperatures compared to A. clausi. The response of A. tonsa is related to its ubiquity in Atlantic Ocean estuaries (temperate and tropical), and its capacity to live in temperate waters throughout most of the year. Differences between upper lethal temperatures and critical thermal maxima were very narrow for A. tonsa from tropical and subtropical areas. This suggests that, in warm climates, this copepod lives close to its upper lethal temperature limits.

Notes: Abstract A rationally derived temperature index (SET*) which can be used as a biometeorological index of man's thermal discomfort has been developed by simple physical theory and has a valid physiological basis. The SET* index, when referred to a standard environment, has been tested experimentally as a measure of warm and cold discomfort for sedentary subjects under varying conditions of radiant heat and dry and wet bulb temperatures. The reference environment is common to one normally experienced in man's daily living while wearing 0.6 clo with an air movement of 0.25–0.3 m/s.

What a chosen environment will be, that is, at what skin temperatures the person will feel comfortable, depends significantly on internal body temperature. The same ...

Notes: Abstract Surfaces of tooth enamel were interfaced with recirculating solutions containing calcium and phosphate. The kinetic interfacial reactions of calcium, phosphate, fluoride, and hydrogen ions were determined in solutions of constant fluoride ion concentrations (0.012, 0.025, 0.050, 0.250, or 0.500 mM/l) and /or constant pH (6.8, 7.0, 7.2, or 7.4). The rates of the calcium, phosphate, fluoride, and hydrogen ion reactions at the solid-solution interface increased under the following conditions: (1) increase of the enamel surface area; (2) increase of the rates of solution flow to the interface; (3) increase of solution pH; and (4) increase of the solution fluoride ion concentration. The nearly proportional rates of the concurrently measured reactions indicated the formation of apatitic minerals on the enamel surfaces throughout the time of solid-solution interface.
