    Notes: Toughening epoxy resins can be achieved by blending a low percentage of Liquid Crystalline Polymer with the thermoset. The processing technique consists of the spinning of blends of a thermoplastic (Ardel) with the LCP (PET/PHB60). The bundled filaments are subsequently dissolved in the uncured epoxy resin (Epon 825). After curing, the LCP phase separates from the matrix in the form of microfibers with a very high aspect ratio, which act as crack stoppers and improve fracture toughness of the material.

    Notes: Recovery experiments above Tg and tensile tests have been performed on glass bead and short glass fiber-polystyrene composite sheets obtained from extrusion and subsequent hot drawing. A shift procedure has been applied to the recoil data using a WLF equation. The data reported show that both dimensional stability and mechanical properties are enhanced by adding rigid fillers to the drawn thermoplastic matrix. The presence of short fibers reduces strongly the recoverable strain of the oriented material. A simple model able to predict the equilibrium values of the length reversion ratio of glass bead composites is developed and compares well with the experimental data.

    Notes: The application of ultraviolet (UV)-curable polymeric coatings provides optical fibers with improved strength, microbending resistance, and long-term durability. To ensure constant optical properties of the glass fibers during their life, fully polymerized coatings are needed. Test methods capable of determining the degree of cure and the consistency of the polymeric materials used are therefore required by the fiber technology. This investigation deals with the description of a calorimetric test method for the direct determination of the prepolymer reactivity and its final degree of cure. The analytical technique uses a modified differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) capable of direct measurements of heat fluxes generated during the UV-activated polymerization of photoinitiated acrylic prepolymers. Finally, the degree of cure and the glass transition temperatures were determined for the polymerized coating also in presence of sorbed moisture.

    Notes: The viscoelastic properties of the amorphous and semicrystalline PEEK and of a PEEK-based composite (APC2) have been analyzed as a function of the aging time and related free volume relaxation, at temperatures close to the glass transition temperature. The effect of thermal treatments (physical aging) on the polymer amorphous phase of the three systems is presented. Creep tests approaching the “zero stress” were performed on samples subjected to different thermal histories. The presence of a second phase, namely crystallites and fibers, determines a loss of the mobility of the polymeric amorphous chains and consequently a decrease of the rate of free volume relaxation.

    Notes: Viscosity measurements made by a cone-plate viscometer on polyisobutylene in decalin solutions at different concentrations and their corresponding glass bead suspensions with filler loadings up to 40% by volume are reported. The range of shear rate $ \dot \gamma $ investigated is between 0.1 and 1000 sec-1. The solutions show shear-thinning behavior, and the relative viscosity ηr of the slurries generally decreases with increasing shear rate. The results indicate two different types of mechanism, respectively at high and low shear rates. At low $ \dot \gamma $, the relative viscosity can be correlated extending relations already well known for suspensions in Newtonian liquids which are based on the mechanism of aggregate disruption. The behavior at high $ \dot \gamma $ values is believed to be due to the influence of the filler on the flow properties of macromolecules, in particular on relaxation time. Through a shifting procedure, an increase in relaxation time which depends on filler content and not on polymer concentration is shown.

    Notes: The cure behavior of commercial grade TGDDM-DDS mixtures of compositions ranging from 10 to 100 phr of hardener and the thermal polymerization of the epoxy component are analyzed by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic parameters and heats of reaction determined in isothermal and dynamic scans suggest that DDS primary amine addition and epoxide etherification dominate the cure reactions. The primary amine epoxide addition is characterized by overall heat of reaction (referred to the weight of the epoxy component) of 255 cal/g and by an activation energy of 16.6 kcal/mol. The corresponding values for the etherification reaction are, respectively, 170 cal/g and 41 kcal/mol. A method of derivation of the epoxide conversion from the heat evolved in DSC thermal scans of these systems is presented. The results are in good agreement with independent IR determinations. The steady shear and oscillatory viscosity measurements and the calorimetric analysis of the isothermal cure at 140°C, 160°C, and 180°C of a TGDDM-DDS mixture containing 35 phr of hardener indicate that gelation is principally governed by the primary amine addition. The gelation limits calculated in isothermal tests by combining the calorimetric analysis and the theory describing the nonlinear copolymerization of the tetrafunctional TGDDM with an essentially difunctional DDS were in good agreement with the values experimentally determined through rheological measurements.

    Notes: Blends of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) were prepared and characterized. The analysis of the glass transition temperature indicates no compatibility of the two polymers, which segregated into two distinct phases. The fracture strength of the blends can be explained on the basis of a constitutive model of spheres of PCL embedded in a PMMA matrix. The trend of water sorption confirms the hypothesis of phase segregation of PCL in the glassy matrix of PMMA.

    Notes: The possibility of improving processability of engineering polymers was studied in this work. Low percentages of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer supplied by Bayer Co. were added to the polyetherimide Ultem. The thermal and morphological analysis revealed a two phase system. Rheological measurements in shear flow were carried out in the temperature range of the existence of the mesophase. A significant drop of ∼ 30% in the Ultem viscosity occurs even with 5% w/w TLCP. The influence of the addition of the thermotropic polymer on the mechanical properties of Ultem was also investigated. Moreover, the morphological analysis of the unfilled polymers and of the blends was performed and related to their rheological and mechanical behavior.
