    Notes: Uncrosslinked cis-trans polybutadiene films were prepared on ultraclean glass microscope slides by uniform dipping. The samples were stored in different environments prior to evaluation of surface oxidation by dynamic contact angle using the Wilhelmy plate method and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Storage conditions evaluated were: (1) laboratory air at 20°C and 30% relative humidity; (2) vacuum at 0.1 torr; (3) distilled water equilibrated with air; and (4) degassed distilled water. XPS and contact angle analysis indicate that samples exposed to air undergo significant surface oxidation within 8 h. Exposure of polybutadiene to air-equilibrated water results in slower oxidation. Samples stored in degassed water demonstrated less surface oxidation. Vacuum-stored samples demonstrated the least surface oxidation. Dynamic contact angle measurements demonstrated that receding contact angles are more sensitive to changes in surface oxidation than are advancing contact angles, as expected. Changes in surface wetting characteristics are readily observed after only 1 h in laboratory air, although XPS analysis does not show evidence of oxidation within 4 h of air storage.

    Notes: X-ray diffraction, positron annihilation, electron microscopy and bulk density measurements are reported as a function of the degree of acetylation for a linters cotton. Heterogeneous reaction proceeds with a retention of ordered structure in the fibers. Substitution does increase the extent of disorder but is not sufficiently extensive to disrupt completely order at the fiber, fibril, micro fibril, and crystallite levels. The generation of disorder is associated with an increase in the interfibrillar distance, a breakup of the microfibrillar structure without a total disruption of the microcrystalline structure.

    Notes: Although the clinical experience with calcium alginate has been generally good, well-controlled studies examining the effect of such dressings on the processes of wound healing have not been conducted. The healing of cutaneous ulcers requires the development of a vascularized granular tissue bed, filling of large tissue defects by dermal regeneration, and the restoration of a continuous epidermal keratinocyte layer. These processes were modeled in vitro in the present study, utilizing human dermal fibroblast, microvascular endothelial cell (HMEC), and keratinocyte cultures to examine the effect of calcium alginate on the proliferation and motility of these cultures, and the formation of capillarylike structures by HMEC. This study demonstrates that the calcium alginate tested increased the proliferation of fibroblasts but decreased the proliferation of HMEC and keratinocytes. In contrast, the calcium alginate decreased fibroblast motility but had no effect on keratinocyte motility. There was no significant effect of calcium alginate on the formation of capillarylike structures by HMEC. The effects of calcium alginate on cell proliferation and migration may have been mediated by released calcium ions. These results suggest that the calcium alginate tested may improve some cellular aspects of normal wound healing, but not others. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Complete Auger electron angular distributions have been measured from a Pt(111) substrate in the presence and absence of three distinct iodine adlattices in order to investigate the effect of adsorbate layer structure on substrate emission. The adlattices investigated were Pt(111)(□3 × □3) R30°-I, Pt(111)(□7 × □7)R19.1°-I and Pt(111)(3 × 3)-I. Three Pt Auger transitions were employed (65, 258 and 1968 eV) to explore the effect of Auger electron kinetic energy. For each kinetic energy investigated, the qualitative features of the substrate angular distributions were the same in the presence and absence of the iodine overlayer, although small quantitative differences were observed. An energy-dependent quantitative effect was also observed, in which the absolute intensities of the distributions were attenuated substantially at lower kinetic energies but were relatively unaffected at higher kinetic energies. These results show that lower kinetic energy Auger electron angular distributions (〈300 eV) are relatively sensitive to the presence of the adlattice, although careful quantitative measurements and analyses are required to observe the differences in the distributions. The origin of attenuation features in the distributions is not yet fully understood, and further experimental and theoretical development is required to relate the observed attenuation features to the surface structure.

    Notes: Fracture surfaces of an oriented polystyrene (by stretching 150% at 280°F) show many of the same features observed in the fracture of ordinary polystyrene: craze formation followed by quasi-viscous separation of the craze layer or by quasi-brittle fracture along the craze boundary. In cleavage fracture along the direction of orientation, advance fractures are initiated in flat areas covered, if at all, by an extremely thin layer of craze: the initiation of the “crazeles” fractures appears to arise from the orientation of the molecules rather than the presence of impurity particles.

    Notes: In the interference pattern seen in monochromatic light reflected from a craze layer in polystyrene, the bright fringes are of alternating intensity. The phenomenon is explained in terms of a four-beam interference. Apart from the two reflections from the outer surfaces of the craze layer others arise from a thin layer of approximately constant thickness within the craze layer at its median plane. The phenomenon provides independent evidence to support the electron microscopic observations of the microstructure of crazes in polystyrene.

    Notes: The weight-loss of a methyl-phenyl silicone resin was determined over the temperature range from 135 to 240°C. and up to approximately 10% volatilization. Weight-fraction volatilized varied linearly with the logarithm of time. The history of such logarithmic processes is reviewed briefly. The empirical rate-equation is discussed in terms of the data. On the basis of a surface-removal experiment, and on the basis of the chemistry of the degradation, a mechanism of Fickian diffusion is proposed, wherein the diffusion coefficient varies exponentially as the degree of crosslinking and shrinkage, while the concentration gradient of volatilizable molecules remains constant.
