    Notes: The Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes of 4(1H)-quinazolinone-2,3-dihydro-2-thioxo (1) and the free ligand were studied by 1D and 2D multinuclear magnetic resonance in solution and 13C cross polarization magic angle spinning NMR in the solid state. Compound 1 adopts only one of five possible tautomeric structures in solution, namely the thiouracyl-like structure. It was found that the metal atom is linked to two molecules of deprotonated 1 by N-1 and coordinated by the sulphur atom. The compounds retain the same structure in the solid state and in dimethyl sulphoxide solution.

    Notes: The nucleophilic substitution in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with sodium benzenethiolate has been studied in two kinds of solvent differing in the molecular structure in the vicinity of the carbonyl group. From the evolution of the content of isotactic (mm), heterotactic (mr), and syndiotactic (rr) triads; and of mmmm, mmmr and rmmr isotactic pentads, in the unmodified parts of the polymer, as followed by 13C-NMR, it is unambiguously inferred that any chlorine but the central one of either the isotactic triad at mmr tetrads or the heterotactic triad at rmrr pentads is unreactive. Only a small fraction of mmr tetrads reacts occasionally by the central chlorine of its mr triad instead of the mm. Of those structures, the mmr, especially when located at the end of long isotactic sequences, proves to be highly reactive compared to the rmrr structure. By comparing quantitatively the microstructural changes with degree of substitution and taking into account that the reaction is of SN2 type, the mechanisms of substitution through the three foregoing reactive chlorines have been stated. They are found to be independent of the type of solvent and to account for all the changes in triad and pentad content as experimentally found. Instead, the solvent dependence of the ratio between the mmr- and rmrr-based processes of substitution is such that the depletion of mmr compared to that of rmrr structure may be controlled. The conformational sensitivity of this behavior is discussed on the basis of side work in our laboratory. As a whole, the results of the present work provide some original concepts as to the role of the tacticity dependent microstructure and the related local conformations in the chemical reactions of PVC. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Metathesis ring opening polymerization has been used to copolymerize norbornene and 7,8-bis(trifluoromethyl)tricyclo[4,2,2,02,5]deca-3,7,9-triene. Subsequent thermal elimination of the precursor copolymers yielded acetylene-norbornene copolymers. The undoped copolymers were found to have electrical conductivity, spin concentration, and EPR linewidths which vary with composition. The location of the trans-C—H out-of-plane vibration, however, was invariant at 1010cm-1 indicating that conjugation length of n 〉 4 are present even at 40% acetylene content in the copolymer. The copolymers containing 79 mol % of acetylene units attained a doped conductivity of 0.02 S/cm with a dopant concentration of 6 mol % of I3- per sp2 carbon.

    Notes: The molecular interactions of poly(vinylchloride) (PVC) with some solvents [cyclohexanone (CH), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and N-methylpirrolidone (MP)], esters [dioctylphthalate (DOP) and butyl stearate (BuSt)], and polyesters [poly(ethylene adipate) (PEA) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)] have been investigated by FTIR spectroscopy. In all cases the band of the carbonyl group is found to shift to lower frequencies, but significant differences between the solvent and the esters, whether polymeric or not, are evidenced. For PVC-solvent systems, the shift proves to increase linearly as PVC/solvent ratio increases, what suggests that only a definite number of polymer sites is involved. From the slopes of the straight lines this effect of composition is shown to increase in the order MP 〈 MEK 〈 CH, i.e., as the basicity of the solvent decreases. In contrast, for the PVC-esters or polyester blends, a nonlinear behavior consisting of two distinct interaction processes, is obtained. The increase of shift as PVC/ester ratio increases is faster in the first process for all PVC-ester systems and it is particularly enhanced for BuSt and, to a lesser extent, for DOP. Instead, during the second process, that increase is of little significance for BuSt relative to DOP and PCL. These results account for the saturation of the polymer structures that are capable of interacting, at different rates depending on the type of ester. Besides, the whole number of those structures appears to be lower than in the case of solvents.The results are discussed on the ground of, on one side, the mechanism of nucleophilic substitution on PVC, in the same solutions and blends, which, as found previously, is of a stereospecific nature, and, on the other, the electron-donor-acceptor concept (EDA) and the hard-soft-acid-base concept (HSAB) as applied to both the interacting agents (solvents and esters) and the isotactic GTGT and GTTG- triad conformations as well as the heterotactic GTTT. In the light of the resulting conclusions it is suggested that: (i) the linear behavior shown by the solvents obeys the solvent ability to ensure a dynamic equilibrium between the two possible conformations of -mmr- sequence, i.e., GTGTTT and GTTG-TT, through the preferential interaction with the little likely GTTG- conformation, the content of which happens so to be constant as long as there are -mmr- sequences in solution; (ii) the nonlinear behavior of PVC-ester or polyester binary systems reveals a nonequilibrium situation and so the conformational change GTGTTT ⇒ GTTG-TT, which is highly hindered, will occur occasionally depending on the ester nature. This enables one to attribute the fast and the slow interaction processes to the permanent GTTG-TT conformations derived from the polymerization and to the same conformations formed as the result of the conformational changes, respectively.Strong support for the above novel finding that PVC … O=C interaction is of a local conformational nature is given by two additional investigations. First, a similar study with a PVC sample prepared at -50°C, shows that the carbonyl band shifts of CH and PCL are appreciably lower than those of PVC prepared at 70°C. The same holds for the blendof PCL with the latter PVC sample after substitution reaction (0.6%) at -15°C in CH with sodium benzenethiolate (NaBT). Since the PVC obtained at -50°C and the 0.6% substituted polymer exhibit a lower content of both permanent GTTG-TT conformations ad -mmr- sequence, these results agree with expectatins and confirm the above suggestions. Secondly, the changes in the C—Cl stretchign frequencies of PVC with increasing amounts of solvent or ester, as extensively studied, clearly indicate the occurrence of the aforementioned conformational change, and so they are consistent with our proposals as to the actual conformational nature of PVC…O—C interactions. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The nucleophilic substitution of the chlorine atoms of poly(vinyl chloride) with sodium thiophenate is assumed to obey an SN2 mechanism with inversion of configuration and a steric control according to which reactivities R of the triads follow the order Rmm 〉 Rmr ≫ Rrr. Such a reaction cannot be described by simple differential equations, but a Monte Carlo simulation, first generating a random Bernouillian chain and then simulating random attack of the chain by the reactant according to the triad reactivities, allows a good agreement with the experimental results of both the kinetics of a reaction carried out in cyclohexanone solution at 40°C and the evolution of the 13C and 1H NMR spectra of the tertiary carbon atoms, assuming the following parameters: Bernouillian probability for a meso placement in the initial chain: 0.431; relative reactivities of the mm, mr and rm, rr triads: 1, 0.5, and 0., respectively. The agreement is excellent until the reaction is about three-quarters complete; this shows a limiting level of about 60% substitution. Better agreement can be obtained up to the limit, if a secondary process of steric control by the substituant in a partially substituted mr triad is assumed. Other possibilities for that secondary process are discussed.

    Notes: High strength alumina fibers were fabricated with a polymer precursor process which was monitored with 13C-NMR, elemental analysis, gas evolution, SEM, and X-ray diffraction. Methylaluminoxane was chain extended by reaction with H2O, the unreacted methyl groups were converted to propanoyloxyl and i-propanoyl groups in molar ratios of 0.2 : 0.8 to 0.4 : 0.6 to afford spinning dope of adequate fluidity which can be spun into filaments with suitable stability. These precursor fibers were hydrolyzed in two stages at ambient temperatures and at 320-350°C, and then calcined at 950°C. The resulting alumina fibers have average tensile strengths up to 1.1 GPa and modulus of greater than 140 GPa.

    Notes: Nucleophilic substitution of PVC with sodium thiophenate was carried out in cyclohexanone solution at 5, 25, 40, 60, and 70°C. The initial rate obeys an Arrhenius law from 25 to 60°C, with an activation energy of 70 kJ/mol. Conversion limits are observed which strongly depend on the temperature. The stereoselectivity of the reaction with respect to the configurational triads does not depend on the temperature: the distribution of configurations is only dependent on the conversion. Assuming an SN2 substitution mechanism governed by steric factors, the Monte Carlo simulation procedure described in a prior study is shown to give a good account for all temperatures above 40°C assuming for the mm, mr or rm, and rr triads a reactivity such as Rmm = 2 Rmr and Rrr nil at low temperature and very low at temperatures ≥ 40°C. The low conversion limits observed at 5 and 25°C cannot be explained by a limited accessibility of a part of the polymer. Finally, it is shown that the elimination reaction, which remains limited, does not interfere with the substitution process.

    Notes: Four generations of poly(aryl ether) dendrimers containing aryl sulfide or aryl sulfone groups, and aryl fluoride terminal functionality, have been synthesized using the divergent initiator core method and bis(4-fluorophenyl) sulfone as the core precursor. The strategy is based on the divergent approach and an activation/condensation sequence that involves oxidation of the aryl sulfide group and the displacement of the activated halide moiety by a phenolate ion. The phenolate is easily generated in situ from an aryl carbonate. No reaction intermediates were detected when the condensation reaction was carried out utilizing a very active metal carbonate, such as cesium carbonate, in conjunction with magnesium hydroxide or calcium carbonate which removes some of the fluoride ions formed. The samples were characterized by HPLC, MALDI-TOF-MS, NMR, and SEC. Imperfections in some of the molecules of the dendrimers, formed by reaction of the core precusors with an impurity present in the phenol, were also identified by MALDI-TOF-MS. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: New A2B monomers were synthesized for preparation of hyperbranched aryl ether sulfone macromolecules with aryl fluoride and phenol terminal functionalities. The macromolecules, which possess high thermal stability, were prepared using the divergent approach. A masked phenol with two aryl fluoride groups and a bisphenol with an aryl fluoride group were the monomers used to synthesize these polymers. In both cases, the aryl fluoride group is activated by a sulfone moiety. The synthetic method used for the preparation of the hyperbranched macromolecules gave a fast reaction and a high yield. These methods include, e.g., the use of Cs2CO3 and Mg(OH)2 to generate the phenolate ion in situ. Use of the latter results in the formation of insoluble magnesium fluoride. The best conditions for the reaction utilized the more active nucleophilic polycondensation agent, Cs2CO3, and an aryl carbonate as a masked phenol. NMR, SEC, and MALDI-TOF-MS were used to characterize the samples. MALDI-TOF-MS allowed us to identify the different oligomeric species present, and it also indicated that an internal cyclization competes with the polymerization. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: SCF ab initio and AM1 semiempirical calculations with full geometry optimization have been carried out to model the initial steps of alkenylfuran cationic polymerization. Semiempirical procedures have been used to model propagation steps. Proton affinities of the relevant neutral species as well as the heats of formation of probable dimers were calculated. The results allow the explanation of the experimental behavior. The capabilities of the employed methods to describe these type of processes is discussed. It is confirmed that competition between vinyl and ring site attacks is the most important feature in these systems. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
