Notes: Optimal distributed-parameter filters are commonly implemented using approximating lumped Kalman filtering theory. The effect of such an approximation is investigated. A theoretical development shows that there is a loss in the spatial noise correlation for the lumped approximants. Two numerical examples of engineering significance illustrate that one result of this loss is slower filter convergence for the lumped approximants relative to the full distributed-parameter filters.

Notes: The development phase of the optical photolithography process has long been considered the most crucial, as it is the final image-forming step. Process monitoring methods have focused primarily on end point detection and have not used other inferable on-line information. This paper examines the use of mathematical models in conjunction with on-line development penetration data to determine process changes. An on-line sequential parameter identification scheme is used to calculate a current rate parameter value for the development model, and a Kalman filter is used to reduce erroneous observations caused by measurement noise. A powerful development monitor system results from the combination of real-time data, and on-line parameter and state estimation theory.

Notes: A new input - output approach is presented for optimal regulatory control of systems based on balanced state realization. State-space identification is achieved using input-output data and a balanced realization algorithm. Based on the realized model, an optimal controller design is presented to regXSulate the system outputs at desired levels. The optimal control algorithm is model-predictive in that predictions are made based on measured disturbances. It also compensates for unmeasured disturbances through integral state feedback. This control concept is tested using a continuous stirred-tank chemical reactor model.

Notes: The increasing complexity of process plants and their reliability have necessitated the development of more powerful methods for detecting and diagnosing process abnormalities. Among the underlying strategies, analytical redundancy and knowledge-based system techniques offer viable solutions. In this work we consider the adaptive inclusion of analytical redundancy models (state and parameter estimation modules) in the diagnostic reasoning loop of a knowledge-based system. This helps overcome the difficulties associated with each category. The design method is a new layered knowledge base that houses compiled/qualitative knowledge in the high levels and process-general estimation knowledge in the low levels of a hierarchical knowledge structure. The compiled knowledge is used to narrow the diagnostic search space and provide an effective way of employing estimation modules. The estimation-based methods that resort to fundamental analysis provide the rationale for a qualitatively-guided reasoning process. The overall structure of the fault detection and isolation system based on the combined strategy is discussed focusing on the model-based redundancy methods which create the low levels of the hierarchical knowledge base. The system has been implemented using the condensate-feedwater subsystem of a coal-fired power plant. Due to the highly nonlinear and mixed-mode nature of the power plant dynamics, the modified extended Kalman filter is used in designing local detection filters.

Notes: Optimal control strategies for maximizing the production of induced foreign protein by recombinant bacteria were sought by the optimal control theory. Nutrient and inducer feeding rates were selected as key control variables. Since the problem is linear in the control variables, the optimal control is bang-bang or singular. Singular solutions are shown to exist. The optimal control theory showed that the specific growth rate with respect to nutrient concentration must be kept in its maximum phase and that there exist both a cell growth period and a protein production periods. The optimal control theory calculates exactly the growth and production periods. The glucose concentration is controlled along a singular are to give a maximum specific growth rate. The inducer level is controlled along a separate singular arc.

Notes: Etching is one of the critical steps in the fabrication of microelectronics devices. A time-optimal control problem with a dual-term terminal cost including both bottom linewidth and side-wall curvature is formulated to implement an optimal open-width design principle. A singular-arc solution does not exist and the control action is bangbang. The optimal switching time is analytically calculated. The feasibility and effectiveness of this technique are illustrated by simulation studies. This design and control philosophy can easily be applied to other microelectronics manufacturing processes.

Notes: Earlier studies of fatigue crack propagation (FCP) in polymers have shown a general superiority of crystalline relative to amorphous polymers in terms of FCP resistance. In order to study in detail the effect of crystalline content and character on FCP rates, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was selected as a convenient material in which a wide range of crystallinity can be obtained. To provide a baseline for comparison, FCP rates were determined for essentially amorphous polymers covering a range of molecular weight. Surprisingly, the essentially amorphous PET turned out to be as resistant to FCP as the best crystalline polymers so far observed. In this paper, several observations about FCP rates and fracture topography are reported: FCP rates agree well with the Paris equation over a wide range of ΔK; in any case, the higher the molecular weight, the greater the crack growth resistance according to the Manson-Hertzberg relationship previously established. Fracture surface analysis revealed evidence of softening and drawing, as well as extensive plastic deformation. We suggest that PET can undergo, under cycling loading, both extensive drawing and actual crystallization at the crack tip to form an efficient, crack-resistant network. Thus, PET appears to be the first thermoplastic observed to be self-reinforcing in fatigue.

Notes: The melt strength method is analyzed in terms of its ability to predict the axial stress levels found in tubular film extrusion of low density polyethylene. For certain values of the capillary L/D, the level of axial stresses and average Newtonian viscosity found in the filament stretching and film blowing are comparable at the same draw ratio. The elongation to break of the finished film was found to be primarily determined by the axial stress during the film blowing, at constant frost line height.
