    Description: The first UV spectroscopic measurements of binary X-ray sources with IUE show highly variable emission from a photoionized plasma in the object HZ Her, and give evidence for localized circumsystem material in the binary source Cygnus X-1. In addition, a substantial stellar wind is found in one of the brightest identified X-ray sources HD153919. This system may be surrounded by an extensive H II region unusual in its content of high excitation ion species.

    Description: The FIR absolute spectrophotometer (FIRAS) on the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) has carried out the first all-sky spectral line survey in the FIR region, as well as mapping spectra of the Galactic dust distribution at below 100 microns. Lines of forbidden C I, C II, and N II, as well as of CO are all clearly detected. The mean line intensities are interpreted in terms of the heating and cooling of the multiple phases of the interstellar gas. In addition, an average spectrum of the galaxy is constructed and searched for weak lines. The spectrum of the galaxy observed by FIRAS has two major components: a continuous spectrum due to interstellar dust heated by starlight, and a line spectrum dominated by the strong 158-micron line from singly ionized carbon, with a spatial distribution similar to the dust distribution, and a luminosity of 0.3 percent of the dust luminosity. There are in addition moderately strong 122- and 205.3-micron lines, identified as coming from singly-ionized nitrogen. Maps of the emission by dust and forbidden C II and N II are presented.

    Description: IUE spectra are presented for Feige 4, a DB-type white dwarf. The observed energy distribution is in good agreement with that predicted by a model atmosphere with an effective temperature of 15,500 K and having extremely low hydrogen and metal abundances. These results are evidence against Feige 4 being the source of the apparent extreme-ultraviolet signal detected by Prognoz 6.

    Description: By means of a collaboration across the Atlantic, very long exposures (about 14 hours) have been made with IUE of two high redshift QSO's during October 1978. Target acquisition and initiation was carried out at Vilspa, and the completion of the exposure and read-out of the image was executed at Goddard. The first object Q 2204-408 is an optical QSO with m(v) = 17.5 and z = 3.18 whose spectrum had just been detected earlier with a 350 minute exposure in the short wavelength spectrograph (Wilson, et al. 1978). In this case two longer exposures were obtained in both spectrographs. The other object is the radio QSO PKS 2126-158 with m(v) = 17.3 and z = 3.27 for which a detectable spectrum was obtained in the short wavelength spectrograph.

    Description: An analysis of IUE observations of Seyfert galaxies and QSOs indicates that they have the same energy source and heating mechanisms. Neither collisional de-excitation nor simple dust models are sufficient to explain the small L alpha/H beta ratio of Seyfert galaxies and low z QSOs, which is below the recombination value. For Seyfert galaxies, the Log nu (1450) correlates well with Log W lambda (C IV), with a slope similar to that of QSOs. Regarding X-ray fluxes, which were obtained by the A2 experiment onboard the HEAO-1 satellite, the L alpha luminosity correlates well with the continuum luminosity at 1450 A, and there is a positive correlation between the X-ray luminosity and the full line width at zero intensity.

    Description: Ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 were obtained with the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope on 1992 July 5, when the UV continuum and broad emission lines were at their lowest ever observed level. The high resolution of the spectra, relative to previous UV observations, and the low state of NGC 5548 allow the detection and accurate measurement of strong narrow components of the emission lines of Ly alpha, C IV 1549, and C III 1909. Isolation of the UV narrow components enables a detailed comparison of narrow-line region (NLR) properties in Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies, and removal of their contribution is important for studies of the broad-line region (BLR). Relative to the other narrow lines, C IV 1549 is much stronger in NGC 5548 than in Seyfert 2 galaxies, and Mg II 2798 is very weak or absent.

    Description: Maps of M31 have been obtained at wavelengths of 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns. Emission is detected from the center and from a ring of 50 arcmin radius. The ring is that also seen in H I, in H II, and in radio continuum radiation. The spectrum of the central emission suggests a hotter dust temperature than in the ring. M31 is a weak infrared source, the radiation measured longward of 12 microns being only 3 percent of its total luminosity. The two closest companion galaxies, M32 and NGC 205, have also been detected.

    Description: Extended sources of far-infrared emission superposed on the zodiacal and galactic backgrounds are found at high galactic latitudes and near the ecliptic plane. Clouds of interstellar dust at color temperatures as high as 35 K account for much of this complex structure, but the relationship to H I column density is not simple. Other features of the extended emission show the existence of warm structures within the solar system. Three bands of dust clouds at temperatures of 150-200 K appear within 10 deg on both sides of the ecliptic plane. Their ecliptic latitudes and derived distances suggest that they are associated with the main asteroid belt. A third component of the 100-micron cirrus, poorly correlated with H I, may represent cold material in the outer solar system or a new component of the interstellar medium.
