    Description: Precise ephemerides have been determined for the U.S. Navy Geosat Exact Repeat Mission (ERM) using an improved gravity-field model, PTGF-4A (Shum et al. 1989). The Geosat orbits were computed in a terrestrial reference system which is tied to the reference system defined by satellite laser ranging (SLR) to Lageos through a survey between the Tranet Doppler receiver and the SLR system located at Wettzell, FRG. The remaining Doppler tracking station coordinates were estimated simultaneously with the geopotential in the PTGF-4A solution. In this analysis, three continuous 17-day Geosat orbits, which were computed using the 46-station Tranet data and global altimeter crossover data, have a crossover residual rms of 20 cm, indicating that the Geosat radial orbit error is of the order of 20 cm. The orbits computed based on data collected by a 7-station OPNET tracking network and crossover data have the same level of accuracy.

    Description: Accurate orbit determination and the recovery of geophysical parameters are presently attempted via methodologies which use differenced height measurements at the points where the ground tracks of the altimetric satellite orbits intersect. Such 'crossover measurements' could significantly improve the earth's gravity field model. Attention is given to a novel technique employing crossover measurements from two satellites carrying altimeter instruments; this method can observe zonal harmonics of the earth's geopotential which are weakly observed through single-satellite crossovers. This dual-satellite crossover technique will be applicable to data from such future oceanographic satellites as ERS-1.

    Description: The error sensitivity of orbit calculations in support of the NASA Ocean Surface Topography Mapping Experiment (TOPEX), which require an accuracy on the order of 5 cm, is investigated. The contributions of errors in the gravitational, atmospheric drag and solar radiation pressure models to the computed orbit are analyzed for the cases of an ideal data distribution and realistic laser ranging data coverage. It is found that the major contributor to radial orbital error is the error in the geopotential model, accounting for orbital errors of 30 to 70 cm, with the effects of solar radiation pressure, drag modeling, tracking station coordinate errors making lesser contributions. It is concluded that TOPEX accuracy goals cannot be met using ground-based laser ranging data without improving the geopotential model.
