    Notes: This study investigated the effect of electrical stimulation on quality and palatability of cattle fed a high energy diet for various lengths of time. Stimulation improved tenderness in cattle that were fed a high energy diet for times ranging from 0–210 days. However, the greatest improvement was in cattle that were not fed the high energy diet. The amount of improvement in tenderness decreased as time on a high energy diet increased. Flavor and juiciness scores, sarcomere length, and myofibril fragmentation index were not affected by electrical stimulation. Stimulation significantly improved lean color, firmness and texture and decreased the incidence of heat-ring in muscle at 24 hr postmortem.

    Notes: Seventeen beef and pork blends were evaluated for palatability characteristics, color, appearance acceptability and cooking losses. Cooking losses were not significantly different among blends. Both raw patty color and appearance acceptability were significantly affected by fat and lean source. Increasing pork content changed raw patty color from dark red to pale grayish-pink and decreased appearance acceptability. Patties having high pork content appeared fatter although fat content of blends was not different. Increasing pork fat content improved patty tenderness. Juiciness, flavor, and overall acceptability were no significantly affected by lean or fat source. Results indicate beef/pork blends with 50% or more beef equal all-beef patties in palatability traits and cooking losses.

    Notes: Limanda limanda (35–225 g) fed during daytime when trained to use demand feeders under natural photoperiods. Under continuous illumination different feeding rhythms developed which were detected by periodogram analysis. Interfeeding periods (P hours) varied with body weight (W grams) and temperature (T° C) over the range 6.5–15° C as: In P=4.4 – 0.167 (In W) – 0.05 T. Daily food intake (D grams increased with both temperature and size (In D = 0.099 T + 0.579 In W – 3.49). Relative daily intake (R as % body weight, b.w) increased with temperature but decreased with size (In R = 0.099T–0.41 In W + 1.05). These changes in daily intake are primarily caused by changes in feeding frequency; the amount eaten at a meal is relatively constant save at low temperatures (6.5° C) when appetite is suppressed. Dilution of the food with kaolin (from 4.8 to 2.2 kcal/g) did not cause a compensatory increase in meal size or frequency. Gastric emptying time (GET hours) measured by X-radiography changed with body weight, temperature and relative meal size (M % b.w.) as In GET = 0.68 In M + 0.39 In W – 0.035T + 1.46. With the exception of the lowest temperature (6.5° C) interfeeding periods closely followed GET (P = 1.09 GET – 2.6) supporting the proposal that stomach fullness is a major factor controlling appetite in the dab.

    Notes: SUMMARY. This paper describes the design, construction and testing of a portable monitoring system capable of measuring water temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, light attenuation and depth of operation. The unit is powered by rechargeable batteries and can be used to provide instantaneous readings or continuous records of each variable when used with a suitable chart recorder. Circuits for measuring conductivity and light-ratio are of a novel design. The conductivity circuit measures conductance by the voltage drop across a low-value resistor connected in series with the conductivity cell. The light-ratio circuit measures light intensities by digitizing signals from two photocells and comparing their ratios over short periods of time. The paper includes examples of results obtained with the instrument in a wide range of applications and compares the performance of the Mackereth oxygen electrode with, and without, a small water-circulating attachment.

    Notes: SUMMARY. A new sampler is described combining the advantages of both box and Surber samplers. The sample area is 200 × 250 mm (0.05 m2) and the device has been used to sample the benthos of rivers to a depth of c. 60 mm where the substratum consists of particles with diameters of 50 mm or less. The basic design may be used in water up to 0.5 m in depth, but with an optional top unit this depth may be increased to 1 m. Aquatic macrophytes can also be sampled either on their own or together with the underlying substratum. Results from sampling programmes designed to estimate macrophyte biomass, the biomass of the macroinvertebrate community and the density of Gammarus pulex are given as examples of the flexibility of the sampler on a variety of biotopes.

    Notes: SUMMARY. Three methods of mapping macrophytes on short sections of river are described and compared. All methods involve setting up a 1-m grid system over the site using permanent stakes to locate a series of temporary strings. The first method (detailed mapping), which generates a map, uses the grid system to locate accurately the position of macrophytes and substrata on the river bed. It is very time consuming and objectivity in mapping is difficult to achieve. The second method (points method) involves recording the macrophytes and substratum below each intersection of the 1-m grid system covering the study site. This method is fast, capable of giving estimates of percentage cover for the different substrata and macrophytes but does not produce a map. The third method (rectangles method) is regarded as both the most efficient and also the most objective of the three mapping procedures. The substratum or macrophyte dominating each 50 × 100 cm rectangle of river bed is recorded together with additional substrata and macrophytes present. The procedure is rapid to use in the field, provides a simplified map of the study site and is more amenable to detailed analysis than the two previous methods. All three mapping methods are best suited to rivers less than 20 m wide where safe wading and good visibility can be guaranteed.

    Notes: SUMMARY. Microcystis, an important bloom-forming blue-green alga in Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, was found to accumulate at the lake bottom and overwinter there. Microcystis collected from winter sediments were photosynthetically active, showing temperature and light optima similar to summer and autumn populations. Sediments incubated under in situ conditions in the laboratory maintained photosynthetic activity for at least four months. Such a maintenance ability may be part of an overall strategy by Microcystis populations to ensure a suitable inoculum for the following growth season.

    Notes: SUMMARY. The distribution of Austropotamobius pallipes, the only freshwater crayfish indigenous to the British Isles, is examined using over 300 records collected since 1970. The majority of records are for England where crayfish are found in areas associated with base-rich easily weathered substrata. Waters containing crayfish tend to be in the pH range 7–9, with calcium levels above 5 mg l−1. Crayfish are found in a wide variety of habitats ranging from deep water-filled quarries with a soft substratum to shallow fast-flowing streams.

Both under-yearling and post-yearling Atlantic salmon parr produced high agglutinating antibody titres in response to a single intraperitoneal injection of killed bacterial kidney disease (BKD) cells emulsified in. Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA), Low or no response was observed in animals injected with BKD cells in saline or in animals vaccinated by hyperosmotic immersion. Immunological duration was insufficient in fish vaccinated as under-yearling parr to provide protective immunity 2 years later when the fish had become smolts. Atlantic salmon post-yearling parr injected with BKD cells in FCA demonstrated a reduced prevalence of BKD lesions compared to control animals when both were observed as smolts 1 year after vaccination.

    Notes: The effects of severity of grazing on the herbage intake and milk production of continuously stocked British Friesian cows calving in February–March were examined in three experiments conducted in the years 1976–78 (experiments 1–3 respectively) using a put-and-take technique. In experiment 1 four grazing severities were imposed by maintaining swards with different herbage masses (2500, 3000, 3500, 4000 kg OM ha-1); in experiments 2 and 3 there were two severities of grazing maintained by keeping swards canopies at constant heights of 5 and 7 cm (experiment 2) and 5 and 7·2 cm (experiment 3). Cows were reallocated to treatment every 8 weeks in experiments 1 and 2 and there were three periods, whereas they all grazed throughout a 23-week period on the same treatment in the final trial.A decrease in the quantity of herbage on offer or in sward height reduced herbage intake and milk production in all experiments. Mean daily herbage OM intakes were 11·2, 12·2, 12·2 and 12·2 kg respectively in experiment 1, 12·2 and 13·2 kg respectively in experiment 2 and 12·2 and 152 kg respectively in experiment 3. Mean daily solids–corrected milk yields were 14·2, 15·2, 15·2 and 16·2 kg respectively in experiment 1, 14·2 and 16·2 kg respectively in experiment 2 and 12·2 and 17·2 kg respectively in experiment 3. It was apparent from the data obtained in the first two trials that grazing at a sward canopy height of 7 rather than 9 cm had little effect, but that at 5 cm there were significant depressions in both herbage intake and milk production. Milk yield was depressed to a greater extent when cows were kept on the same treatment for the whole season.
