    Notes: A vector model of magnetic hysteresis in biaxial anisotropy structures is presented, in which magnetoelastic effects are explicitly taken into account. The magnetization vector of individual grains is forced to lie along one of the easy axis, and jumps from one easy direction to another one controlled by the sum of the external field and magnetoelastic energy. Hysteresis effects are described by an energy barrier opposing magnetization switching and the total response of the system is obtained by averaging the local magnetization over all grains. Model predictions are compared with experimental results on the hysteresis properties of Si–Fe alloys under compressive stress. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The conditions under which relaxation dynamics in the presence of quenched-in disorder lead to rate-independent hysteresis are discussed. The calculation of average hysteresis branches is reduced to the solution of the level-crossing problem for the stochastic field describing quenched-in disorder. Closed analytical solutions are derived for the case where the disorder is characterized by Wiener–Lévy statistics. This case is shown to be equivalent to the Preisach model and the associated Preisach distribution is explicitly derived, as a function of the parameters describing the original dynamic problem. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new technique for the optical spectroscopy of adsorbed molecules is introduced. It is based on the detection of the phonons emitted during nonradiative relaxation. A high sensitivity was achieved by using superconducting tunnel junctions as detectors. A light power of the order of 1 μW was sufficient for the spectroscopy of submonolayers of tetracene. Molecules deposited on a cold substrate had a spectrum similar to the one of isolated molecules in a solvent. Deposition, or annealing, at room temperature, however, yielded spectra like those of single crystals.

    Notes: Two different approaches to hysteresis modeling are compared using a common ground based on energy relations, defined in terms of dissipated and stored energy. Using the Preisach model and assuming that magnetization is mainly due to domain-wall motion, one can derive the expression of magnetization along a major loop typical of the Jiles–Atherton model and then extend its validity to cases where mean-field effects and reversible contributions are present. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: In this paper, we present the results of an experimental investigation on the magnetocaloric properties of hydrogenated La(Fe-Mn-Si) 13 -H with Mn substituting Fe to finely tune the transition temperature. We measured the specific heat under magnetic field c p ( H , T ) and the magnetic field induced isothermal entropy change Δ s ( H , T ) of a series of compounds by direct Peltier calorimetry. Results show that increasing Mn from 0.06 to 0.46 reduces the transition temperature from 339 K to 270 K whilst the total entropy change due to a 1.5 T field is depressed from 18.7 J kg −1  K −1 to 10.2 J kg −1  K −1 and the thermal hysteresis similarly is reduced from 1.5 K to zero. In the paper, we interpret the results in terms of a magnetic phase transition changing from the first to the second order with increasing Mn content, and we discuss the value of the results for magnetic cooling applications.

    Description: In the framework of the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE), we developed an experimental setup for the characterization of LSSE devices. This class of device consists in a layered structure formed by a substrate, a ferrimagnetic insulator (YIG) where the spin current is thermally generated, and a paramagnetic metal (Pt) for the detection of the spin current via the inverse spin-Hall effect. In this kind of experiments, the evaluation of a thermal gradient through the thin YIG layer is a crucial point. In this work, we perform an indirect determination of the thermal gradient through the measurement of the heat flux. We developed an experimental setup using Peltier cells that allow us to measure the heat flux through a given sample. In order to test the technique, a standard LSSE device produced at Tohoku University was measured. We find a spin Seebeck S SSE coefficient of 2.8 × 10 − 7 V K −1 .

    Description: We have investigated the entropy change in the ferroelectric phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) 70/30 films by direct heat flux calorimetry using Peltier cell heat flux sensors. We find that by applying a negative electric field to a positively poled state, the entropy can be further increased without any significantly change of the remanent polarization or the domain structure. By cycling between positive and negative values of the electric field, the electrocaloric effect (ECE) can be then improved by a factor of 2. As an example, we measured, around the positive remanence P r  = 60 × 10 −3  C m −2 , a fully reversible entropy change |Δ s | = 1 J kg −1 K −1 for a field change from 40 × 10 6 to −40 × 10 6  V m −1 and a maximum of |Δ s | = 3.2 J kg −1 K −1 for an asymmetric field change from 200 × 10 6 to −40 × 10 6  V m −1 . This effect can be exploited to significantly increase the range of operating temperature for ECE materials below their Curie temperature.

    Description: The phase transformation kinetics of LaFe 11.41 Mn 0.30 Si 1.29 -H 1.65 magnetocaloric compound is addressed by low rate calorimetry experiments. Scans at 1 mK/s show that its first order phase transitions are made by multiple heat flux avalanches. Getting very close to the critical point, when the transition becomes of the second order type, the step-like discontinuous behaviour associated with avalanches is smoothed out and the thermal hysteresis disappears. This result is confirmed by magneto-resistivity measurements and allows to obtain accurate values of the temperature hysteresis (Δ T hyst  = 0.37 K) at zero external magnetic field and of the critical field ( H c  = 1.19 T). The number and magnitude of heat flux avalanches change as the magnetic field strength is increased, showing the interplay between the intrinsic energy barrier between phases and the microstructural disorder of the sample.
